FYI: CDC warning for travel

Wanted to make sure everyone got this warning specifically if you are planning a vacation.
CDC is warning pregnant women not to travel to specific Latin and Caribbean countries due to an increase in viral cases that may be linked to microcephaly.
The data is pretty compelling and I would be concerned. Take it as you wish.

  • There was a case found in Hawaii and I'm going in April ;( Or supposed to go :(
  • While I get why this warning is needed I just wish that more was said about CMV, a virus that is found every where that causes the same things as this.  It's also the #1 leading cause of deafness in children and is more common than Down Syndrome but not many people know about it.   My 1st child was born with it. https://www.nationalcmv.org/

@mom2adoodle The issue isn't in Hawaii. If you read that article, the mom had spent time in Brazil while she was pregnant, where she became infected. There's no danger of Zika in HI
  • @MoonInOr The article doesn't mention Hawaii but there are cases reported already, it doesn't mention Dominican Republic either and I live here there have been a few cases as well; so there is danger of being infected, that being said, you can always protect yourself by using bug repellent and wearing sleeves, avoid places where there are a lot of mosquitoes.

I've lived here all my life, dengue fever is endemic and last year we had pandemic chikunguya and I've never had either of them. You want to be extra careful but I wouldn't cancel a vacation based solely on that.

  • @MoonInOr The virus can transfer from a mosquito biting the mom and then biting another person. Who then is likely infected. There's no way to prove 100% that a mosquito did not bite her then bite another person during her time in Hawaii.
  • @mom2adoodle , the story I'm referring to is the mom FROM Hawaii, that just had a baby with birth defects. She was infected while in Brazil, where she had traveled during her pregnancy.
  • Wow, thanks for sharing w us.
  • I'm so conflicted on what to do, I'm MOH in a wedding in Mexico in May. So far I have put my deposit in and full payment is due Feb 19th. I'm 70% not going but still can't decide.
