PP checkup

Alright ladies, what should I expect? I'm not sure why I'm nervous but I am. Also, is anyone going to be on mirena or has anyone had it before? How was it for you?
Will the give me the birth control at this appointment or would they schedule for another? I've only been on loestrin and I'm pretty sure they don't offer it anymore, nervous about trying a new birth control.

Re: PP checkup

  • I don't think there is anything to be nervous about, you just pushed a baby out of your vag I think that's more scary then a check up apt. I haven't been on bc for years I don't even know what is out therefore options anymore. I would assume if you ask for bc your OB will write the script.

  • I don't think there's anything to worry about. My flyer says they just check you've healed, ask about feelings of ppd and such, and talk about bc. I don't know anything about mirena but I believe it's been brought up a few times along with other kinds of bc that you can search for. It's a little bit old but I feel like I remember people saying mixed things about it?
  • My OB discussed birth control with me at my pp checkup. She was willing to write me a script if I wanted it. I think they will probably do that for you at your appointment.
  • For me both times it was mostly like a yearly well woman exam. She did a pap smear and breast exam since I was due, asked some questions about how things are going and asked what bc I wanted to use. I opted for depo shots. Last time I looked at Mirena but got pregnant before I got it. I was told by my OB she likesaid to wait until 8 weeks to play Mirena so will usually order it at 6 weeks and her office will check coverage to make sure insurance will cover it.

If your breastfeeding basically merina, progesterone only pills and condoms are the basic options. If your not breastfeeding you can use any kind.

I've used merina twice and love it. No worries about forgetting a pill. I got pregnant easily after it was removed. Only hurt a little going in and out. I'm getting it again my obygn waits until about 8 weeks to insert it.

  • My ob requires a two week appt for birth control- their reasoning was that no one waits the actual six weeks to have sex- and then the normal six week pp appt after that.
  • It's no big deal. Ob will do a breast exam and look at your vagina. Mine offered to prescribe me bc at the time. But IUDs sometimes have to be ordered, so it may take a later visit.
  • Im in the minority and actually think its strange but my OB just talked to me...no exam at all...but I had a very smooth and easy delivery with no tearing. Im sure if any of my answers to his question put up a flag he would have checked. So we just talked about how I was doing, BC options, and I eas gone.
  • I had a 4 week pp visit and we just talked about how I am doing. We talked about the stress of a new baby and signs of PPD. I go for another pp next week, I'll be 7 weeks pp and that is when I have the exam and I'll be getting the iud.
  • I had a transvaginal ultrasound at 2w PP and that was SO painful. I'm hoping my next checkup isn't as traumatizing. My OB said to pick out a BC so we can get that started by the next appointment. I have never been on BC before so it's overwhelming to just pick one. Maybe give your office a call to see exactly what the appt will entail.
  • I had mirena before and absolutely loved it. Almost no period after the first month of having it, was able to get pregnant 3 weeks after having it removed. The procedure to put it in was slightly uncomfortable, but the doc said it would be less uncomfortable if they had put it in while I had my period (I didn't want to wait). I felt a bit crampy for a day afterward, but that was it.
  • @VesperLove I don't think it's so strange. My OB said this time since it was an uncomplicated delivery that she wouldn't have done the exam except that I was due for the yearly one anyway so it was simpler to fit it into the same visit.

@ammnam14 Maybe this link would be helpful for you so you don't feel quite so overwhelmed.

  • I love Mirena! I was on it for 5 years and got pregnant 3 weeks after having it taken out. I didn't have a period on it at all. At my 6 week we set the appointment and I'm getting Mirena put in next week. The first time around it was a painful insertion, but I hear it is less painful if you have had a child.
  • My yearly women exam since it was due. (Holy painful right now since BF) And my incision was checked as well. Love love my Ob so I'm kind of sad I won't go back for a year lol.
  • As PP said, after going through childbirth no office exam seemed scary to me anymore. Especially now that my last birth was med free... Ha! With my first they asked questions about how I was emotionally to rule out PPD, checked my stitches and discussed bc. I went with the mirena last time and will again this time. They don't insert until 10w pp so I had a month of the mini pill to hold me over. Mirena was great for me. Insertion wasn't bad at all (again you just had a baby, you can handle anything!) and I had maybe 2 super light periods in the 18 months I was on it.
  • I went in at 4 weeks PP. She did an internal exam because I had dilated so far before the Cesarian, but she didn't do a breast exam due to me breastfeeding. We talked about PPD and birth control and she checked my incision. The process took maybe 15 minutes.

I actually got a freaking Pap smear done! I thought I was going to punch a hole thru the wall! :s She never mention PPD, and talked me out of the pill somehow and I'm waiting for my mirena now.. But seriously, a Pap smear 6 weeks after vaginal delivery?!?

    This is normal
  • I had a 4 week pp checkup today. I thought I would talk to my doc about bc, but he said it was fine to start now so he put my IUD in (Mirena). He did say it was more comfortable since I'm still bleeding. It was uncomfortable, but not painful. No worse than when he did a membrane sweep at my 39 week appt!

They also checked my iron level and I had blood drawn for my thyroid. The only reason I was there for a while was my OB had to go catch a baby first.
  • Did anyone's OB say they were still pretty red and irritated down there at their 6 week PP checkup? Mine did and the speculum hurt and I bled a little. Scared me about when sex may not hurt.

Six weeks is just an average time for healing. Don't worry if you take a little longer. Are you supposed to come back again?

No she said it would heal eventually and just do intercourse when I feel ready and use lube. But how do I know when it's less irritated?
  • @lalg28 - you could always, um, check for yourself first. Coconut oil is a great lube and would hopefully be nicer than some of the other lubes like ky or id glide.

I had a c section, but the speculum was really uncomfortable for me too.
  • Okay that's what I was wondering, was it more just the speculum? And obviously I can feel first but he is going to be larger and then the friction. I guess maybe you just have to try it, just makes me nervous now though.
  • @lalg28 What I learned after my first when I was healing from an episiotomy is take your time, be honest with your partner, lube, foreplay can really help, being on top gives you control which helps as you figure out what you can handle and what feels good, and don't worry if you have to stop and give yourself more time before you start again. It does get better again.

I'll add I've heard some women say if it doesn't get better or if to you it feels unusually painful for longer than you would expect don't be afraid to go back to the doctor and get checked out again.
