Sugar causing issues?

So DH was on vacation for 3 weeks and went back to work on the 11th of January. For the entire vacation we had eggs for breakfast...boiled, scrambled, fried and so on. Previously I was getting major dizzy spells in the morning but it stopped which I assumed was just because I was further into second trimester. Now that he isn't home for breakfast I have gone back to cereal and the morning dizzy spells have started again! My cereal isn't overly sugary but it does have some. Could this really be what's giving me the dizzy spells?

I have decided to keep my sugar down to fruits and the honey I have in my tea at night to see if I feel better overall. Anyone else have sugar issues or experience with dizzy spells (to the point of needing to lay down) due to sugar intake?

Re: Sugar causing issues?

  • I wonder if it's more about having protein? Sugar can do it too, although I found t more just makes my heartburn worse...but maybe by having eggs your blood sugar was just more stable?

  • Yeah I am guessing it's the lack of protein in the morning, rather than the sugar. (But I'm not a doctor so take that with a grain of salt)

My first thought, too! Eggs are one of the best things you could eat. I'm thinking of making some egg muffins for the week and reheating them up in the mornings. That might be a good solution to make things easier.

  • Huh . . . I never even thought it might be a lack of protein vs my body hating sugar.  I do have a lot of milk with my cereal but I guess an egg would have more. Either way I'm planning to be less lazy and make myself an egg in the morning instead of the fast easy cereal.
  • Protein can also help to regulate your sugar. It makes the body's use of carbs more efficient, as opposed to the carbs turning straight into sugar and not able to be used for energy, etc. So it could still be a blood sugar thing, but the eggs may have been helping you and now they aren't.
  • If you like hard boiled eggs... I've found those to be super easy for breakfast. I just hard boil a whole dozen at a time, and then they are already made :)

I love hard boiled eggs but MH doesn't like to keep them cooked and around for more than one night. I made a bunch when I first moved in and he complained about the egg smell till they were gone. I make one the night before if I want one but I forget sometimes :)
  • I have wonky blood sugar in the morning and by far the best breakfast I've found for stabilizing it is eggs and oatmeal. Weirdly enough, they have to be separate- I tried making egg & oatmeal pancakes, which had the exact same ingredients as when I ate them separately, and I would just end up ravenous and crashing an hour later. So weird.

Stick with the eggs! Although I don't understand how people can eat hard boiled eggs, those gross me out so much ;)
  • I'm chiming in a bit late, but I too have blood sugar issues when pregnant. My bet would actually be that it could be from a blood sugar spike & protein would help because it evens out blood sugar.
The funny thing about milk is that is has a lot more carbohydrates than other dairy especially if it's not full fat (cheese, Greek yogurt, etc), so cereal & milk is really carby & will make your blood sugar shoot up.
If I eat something carby, I have to eat it with a good deal of fat & protein to avoid it effecting my blood sugar.
I'd definitely stick with eggs. Maybe toast with butter or 2% Greek yogurt if you want more to it.
  • How has your blood pressure been? Like other PP's have said if this is a food reaction protein has helped me during dizzy/nausea spells.
