7 weeks pregnant but measuring 5!!!

I had my first u/s today ( saw a fetal pole but no HB) and going off my LMP I should be 7 weeks 3 days but I was measuring 5 weeks 3 days. The Dr. Said its either two things, my dates are off and I ovulated later than expected or it is not a viable pregnancy. I'm at lost for words. Has anyone had any experience with this happening to them?
Also I had my HGC levels checked today and I was @ 4,559. In two days I retest to see if my levels are increasing. Any advice would be a great help. Thank you in advance!

Unless you temp, there's not way to know when you ovulated. It's likely that, like your doctor said, you ovulated later.

  • Will they be doing a follow up u/s in a week or two?  This happened with my daughter.  She was measuring a week behind my lmp date, but after another u/s, they confirmed that I had just ovulated later and she was growing right on schedule.

FX that this is all that happened and that you still have a healthy baby.  Keep us updated.
  • Hoping all goes well with the little one! Keep us posted!

  • Lmp is a really unreliable method to determine due date. Positive vibes. If you don't know when you ovulated just wait for the doctor to confirm the due date. Plus I think girls also can run a little behind size wise so maybe you just got a tiny little peanut of a baby girl on your hands. Good luck!

  • Agree that you probably ovulated later than day 14. Day 14 is just an estimation and many women do not ovulate on that exact day, which is why LMP is not the most accurate way to calculate due date. Sadly, it's how the medical profession does calculate it. For example, I have longer cycles and was charting when we conceived so I know I did not ovulate until day 20, making my EDD 6 days later than my OB's office would have me believe. Do you typically have longer cycles than 28 days?

(Sidenote: Highly recommend reading Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Wechsler. I learned so much about my body by reading it and I totally credit its charting tools for us getting pregnant this time! We had been trying 7 months when I started charting and then got pregnant that very next cycle!)

  • I ovulated a week "late" so was measuring a week less on my u/s. Prayers its the same situation for you!

  • My lmp is never an accurate way to tell for me. My DD measured a week less and this baby is measuring a week and a half less than what it should be. Hopefully this is just the case for you as well.
  • Yes this happened to me... My last pregnancy I thought I was 7 weeks and measured 6 w 2 days... I went back a week later and measured the same... No hb either time... The doc said the same thing to me and after my second ultrasound and no growth we knew it wasn't viable... But don't freak out... Everyone is different and u may very well have miscalculated or ovulated later! Finger crossed for you!

  • @nick1313 This same thing happened to me! I was supposed to be 8 weeks 1 day when I went to my first appointment and measured 5w 5d (just saw the gestational sac and yolk sac). They did a blood test to make sure my HCG matched 5w5d and not 8w1d. My HCG at that point was 4700. I had to go back the next week to check progress and we heard the heartbeat so everything seemed to be fine and I just ovulated 2 weeks late. I have mild PCOS so it's not entirely surprising although my cycles have been more regular lately.

Now, with that said, I had another problem- my progesterone dropped from my first appointment to the next week. When they got those results in, I had to go back immediately for another lab. Turns out my progesterone dropped from 15.6 to 12.7 and then to 10.5. I'm so thankful I ovulated late, otherwise they wouldn't have had the opportunity to see my progesterone drop and begin treatment. I've been on progesterone suppositories for a week now and they called today to let me know that my Monday results showed that I was up to 29.6 at that point.

I hope you find your silver lining (hopefully not through additional problems like me). It's very common to measure behind because of late ovulation. Will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Stay calm as best you can!

  • I hope thing have turned out well.  Come back and update us.
  • The EDC (Or EDD) is calculated based on a 28 day cycle where the woman ovulates exactly on day 14. For women with cycles longer than 28 days and/or ovulate after day 14, the "measured" duration will be different than LMP-based duration.

I was 7w and measured 5w2d. At the time concerned of a miscarriage, I asked tech about it. He said that growth is measured from when the baby implants, which can vary. He pointed out the above.  My primary confirmed what the tech said (as did my nurse mother, who worked L&D for years) - it really is estimated date of confinement/ due date, so it could be different than the measurement.  :)

My cycle (TMI) runs 32-35 days, depending, so I am not all that surprised mine is a good week and a half-ish different.

    Good luck, lady! <3

  • Same thing happened to me when I found out in December... I was only 3 weeks when I should have been 5. However my levels continued to increase and I'm now 9 weeks and have seen my babies heart beat! Day your prayers and everything will be just fine!
