Baby's heart rate dropping...

Hi! So on Friday morning I slipped on dog poo outside and fell forward and hit my stomach, I did put my arm out to catch most of the impact but it happened so fast my stomach did make contact with the sidewalk.
So I went into the hospital just to make sure everything was okay right away. Everything turned out to be great my blood work came back fine, his heartbeat, his fluid levels were good everything. They did make me stay 24 hours on monitoring because the doctors wanted to make sure there was no placenta eruption or bleeding that happened afterwards.
I've now been here 48 hours because apparently the baby's heart rate has dropped about 5 times now in the past 2 days. They said it dropped for a while and then it comes back up and stays normal for a while.
They really arent telling me much as far as what could happen what could be causing this what happens next nothing, all they keep saying is that they want to monitor the baby and I further...
Basically if anyone has any thoughts experiences anything they want to share that would be nice. Super worried and frustrated haven't slept this whole time :( Thanks ladies!

  • I don't really have any advice but you're obviously being well taken care of so I'm glad about that! Hope you're clear to go home soon!!! Thoughts and prayers to you and baby :)

  • Thank you! I hope so too @ecwk
  • I'm sorry this happened to you, I know how much it stinks.
Around 28 weeks, my 50 lb dog launched himself onto my stomach and we rushed to the hospital. I ended up spending 4 nights there for monitoring because I kept having contractions. During my time, we saw several doctors, some from my obs practice and others from the high risk practice as I was carrying twins. They were all extremely up front on what was going on, why they were monitoring me and why they were doing certain things. We also extensively discussed what would happen if I had to deliver that early. Luckily, it turned out alright for me.

If I were you, I would demand to know what is going on. It is your right to know why they are keeping you and what they think may be happening or could happen. It all may be because your lo's heart rate is dropping and they may be concerned they'll need to intervene. I'd ask what the chances are they think that may happen, what will happen if they do need to intervene, and how long they need to see the heart rate stabilize before they are no longer this concerned.
Also, depending how far along you are, you should inquire about the nicu. Find out if something were to happen, would this hospital be able to house your child or would they need to be sent elsewhere.

I hope you get to go home soon! Sitting in the hospital can drive you mad. Good luck.
  • Any updates? Hope all is well!
  • How much is it dropping? Like enough for them to be worried. I was just thinking, doesn't it drop when the baby is less active, so could it just be when he's sleeping? I have no clue or experience. Sending positive thoughts your way. Glad you're in the hospital where they can keep an eye on things.

  • Thank you all for your warm wishes, we ended up getting sent home after 6 days of being monitored his heart rate stabilized for 13 hours and they told me I'm in the clear. Super hard to deal with now because I'm constantly worried about if his heart rate is okay or not now and they told me I don't need any additional monitoring. He's been super active though and we are feeling great :)
  • No experience, but I'm thinking of you. Please try to get some rest.
