If I stopped bleeding after a natural miscarriage, can I try again?

Stopped bleeding completely. Can I try again? Should I wait?

  • I'm sorry for your loss.

You should talk to your doctor. Every miscarriage is different. You should likely have bloodwork and/or an ultrasound to ensure everything has been passed.

  • Definitely ask your doctor. Have you had an ultrasound to confirm that there's no retained tissue or have they been tracking you HCG levels to 0? If so, you're probably fine, but only your doctor will be able to give you the green light.
  • When i had a miscarriage the doctor told us we didn't have to wait that we could try again right away but we waited til i stopped bleeding and weve been BDing since then trying to get our rainbow baby
  • I think it depends on how far along you are and what your doctor thinks. I was 5 1/2 weeks, and my doctor said it was fine. My friend actually got pregnant right after she had a chemical pregnancy so that gives me hope in some weird way for our rainbow baby.
  • My doctor STRONGLY advised me to wait at least 1 period. He said I get pregnant too soon there is a large potential for complication. He then told me to start trying again right after my AF. Literally his last words in that appointment was  "tell your husband to use a condom till you get your AF"... Originally I thought I naturally Miscarried after an ultra sound I still had tissue and had to do a D&C. This was his advice after both appointments the natural miscarriage and the D&C.

I'd ask your doctor just to be on the safe side. I'd also ask to go in to make sure all the tissue is gone.
  • Hi, I know you've probably already had your AF since you posted this, but I wanted to throw in my doctor's advice for anybody still checking in.

My doc told me to wait a cycle after a chemical pregnancy even though it was only 4w1d, and I was getting negative pregnancy tests the same morning the bleeding started.  I consulted a friend's dad who is an OB, and he said to wait three months.  I guess every doctor will say something different, depending on how cautious or old-school they are.  The reasons given by my doctor and my doctor-friend, respectively, were "to let your hormones normalize" and "to let the uterine lining rebuild."

Personally, I feel ready to try again now (it's been 8 days and the bleeding stopped 3 days ago), but my DH doesn't want to ignore the doctor and risk another loss.  I think if I did conceive this cycle, I'd have a nagging fear for the duration of the pregnancy.  I know we're all anxious to hold our rainbow babies, and I also think deep down we all know what is better for us: waiting or trying right away.

I hope you'll be getting happier news soon!
  • My doc said to wait 2 cycles, so I did. I would have felt so guilty if I ignored, got pregnant, then lost that one immediately.
