To Wax or not to Wax

Hi ladies!
Yesterday I noticed I needed to trim my pubic hairs. About 15 seconds later I realized unless I bent over, couldn't breathe, and was very uncomfortable (and squishing little man!) I couldn't trim my pubic hairs.
My question is: what is everyone else doing/planning to do about maintaining their pubic hairs? Are you trimming by feel, going in for a wax, or just letting it grow?

Re: To Wax or not to Wax

  • I'm been shaving by feel. I would wax, but since I don't do it regularly I'm afraid it will get extra irritated if I do. As it gets more difficult I will probably use a hand mirror to shave while I'm in the shower

  • I've both trimmed by feel/with a mirror and waxed. If you wax yourself, it's very important to pull the skin taunt-- otherwise it can be very painful and sticky.
  • Wax it, girl. I regularly get waxed anyway so I've never found it uncomfortable or an inconvenience during either pregnancy. I find it way easier. Plus I'm out of breath just standing still currently, so there's no way I'm bending over any more than I have to during the day.
  • I shave by feel about once a week.
  • Last pregnancy I just shaved by feel...until I got a serious ingrown/infected hair. Then I stopped and just let things grow for the remainder of the pregnancy. Frankly, I don't think it is that big of a deal.

  • A. No one will judge you if you can't get down there, no one cares (husband, drs, nurses)
    B. If you're doing it for you, make your SO help
  • I waxed with my previous pregnancies and it wasn't any different than usual. I would usually take a painkiller and down a margarita before my waxing appointments (best friend and I would go to our waxing appointments together so we didn't have to suffer alone), so that was off of the table for a bit. Womp womp. I bought myself laser hair removal a few years back though. GAME CHANGER.
  • I'm still waxing. It was my regular routine before pregnancy and I haven't seen any reason to change it thus far.

    Going in this afternoon, actually.
  • I used to get waxed regularly but haven't since I got pregnant and have reached the point of shaving not being an option but for some reason I'm afraid it's going to hurt more now. Maybe just the extra blood flow or something? Not sure. I may go Sunday. We shall see if I chicken out or not
  • My SO wouldn't be thrilled if I stopped shaving.. nor do I really want to go 'all natural' quite yet.. but like you're all saying its becoming hard to bend over lately and I'm just not sure I trust him with a sharp object down there, lol. I guess I'll continue the by feel method and hope for the best until we come up with another solution. Never been waxed so it sounds painful to me.
  • No fog mirror for the shower
  • Back from salon, so I'll report in: at 22 weeks, getting waxed didn't feel any different from normal. No increased pain. If anything, it was probably easier this time than usual.

If you are doing it for yourself - go for it!  But don't do it for the labor and delivery nurses/doctors.  They've seen it all before.  Pubic hair does not even make the lunch break conversation.

Oh yeah! I don't think anyone who's gunna see it care, but I just prefer a more trimmed look.

True story, during the birth of my son the doctor looked down and said "oh! I see a lot of hair!" To which I responded "I'm sorry I couldn't reach!" Yeah she was taking about my son's head crowning....I'm an idiot
Literal LOL!!!!! haha That is so funny ;)
  • And to answer OP's question, I'm still trimming and shaving. I must have really long arms or something though? Because I'm not out of breath or anything. Just a lil awkward but doable.

lucky! I'm more the short arms long torso type.

Haha I can see where that would be a problem! But good for growing babies ;)
  • I would never ever ever even attempt to wax. Ever. Not into pain just to remove some hair.

I told DH I can barely see to shave, and he said something about growing a "bush", and having to see it when I'm naked. I told him if he's not careful he won't be seeing anything until this baby is a year old.

Who cares? It's just hair. I'll shave until I can't, then let it grow until I can do it again. I just am not looking forward to the pain and itching when it grows in!

  • So I went to a midwife in Germany last week for an intro appointment and she applied some sport tape on my belly and back to help with my back pain and she was so surprised that I had some hair down there! She even made a comment about never seeing hair anymore. Awkward!

Thankfully she won't be attending the birth. Just post natal care for me!
  • BTW this would totes be me trying to get a wax

  • Trim with an electric razor!  Easy, quick, painless, no risk of ingrown hairs or skin effects, and it keeps everything tidy and manageable:)

^^This. I've never waxed once in my life. I haven't shaved in at least 15 years. I trim like once a year? I dunno...bush is the new black? In any event, I've never had a partner say anything about it, and I've had plenty of relationships where we would talk frankly about anything and everything so this would come up if it was an issue.

Wax, save yourself the heartache and your breath! And if hard was is an option, it hurts less than normal.
  • Haha you're amazing!
  • I would go for a wax! I go every few weeks and it is really not that painful at ALL. I swear shaving is so uncomfortable for me and I'm too lazy to keep up with it. The woman I go to is amazing. She uses hard wax and I was scared it might be painful during pregnancy but I'm pretty sure I feel it even less than I usually do! I also get my upper legs waxed, and I honestly find that more uncomfortable than the bikini/ Brazilian area. Plus, the more you wax the longer it takes to grow in and the thinner it comes in. I've been going for years and am such an advocate for waxing... Please try it. Find someone with good reviews online and you will never shave again!
  • Shave by feel...and I prepared my husband by telling him it looked like I had hired a blind man to trim the hedges

It turns out if I push my baby in a little I can get most of it with a trimmer. Who knows how long that will last for!
  • Do any experienced waxers have tips for after care? I just got my first wax this weekend and have some red bumps and irritation. I read about tend skin on google but it's not recommended during pregnancy.
  • @mondo77 not sure where you're located, but Bliss sells these pads that prevent ingrown hair and exfoliant to use after their waxes. They're both available at Sephora but I would ask your doctor before using the pads, I can't recall the ingredients specifically. If it's just irritation and not an ingrown hair I would use a little coconut oil.
  • If it's your first ever wax, don't stress the irritation will go away within a day or so. I've been waxing so long I don't get any irritation anymore but your skin and hair follicles haven't adapted yet. In a week start exfoliating every few days until your next wax to help prevent ingrowns and moisturize! Dry skin makes ingrowns worse
  • Thanks for the tips! It was my first and I picked up the bliss pads at ulta today. Will keep up with the exfoliating between appointments
  • I shave in the mirror but would love to get waxed if I could get over the awkward factor.  I'm not even scared of the pain, I'm scared of having my vajay just out in the open! This might sound weird, but is your whole business uncovered, or do they wax one side and then the other?

@Jenly17 Your whole business will be out in the open! It seems awkward at first, but honestly just ask the person who is doing your wax…almost all of their appointments are brazillian. They're basically gynocologists haha. And once they start, it doesn't even feel awkward. Go for it!

Think of it as practice for child birth! Once you've done it enough you get over it anyway. I say go for it!! You'll love being hair free
