Cleaning baby's ears

i have safety q tips and attempted to clean his ears tonight as they needed it. It seems dry, is there anything I can use to help with cleaning them?

He also has lint in his belly button I noticed today, can I used rubbing alcohol and a safety q tip for that?

Re: Cleaning baby's ears

  • My doctor said to clean the ears with a damp wash cloth (gently of course and not totally inside). I would assume a dab of alcohol would be ok for the belly button and we were advised to use alcohol wipes to clean it when it was still healing from the umbilical cord. Definitely give your doctor a quick call to make sure.

  • I clean LO's ears after her bath when the wax is softer. I use safety q-tips as well and used the same ones when DS was a baby. A damp wash cloth would work the same though.
  • I use the safety q tips too! Usually about once every couple of days. I don't wanna do it to much or irritate his ears and I usually wait until I see the wax on the outside. Gross lol
  • My doctor kept telling me not to use q-tips and that the ears make wax and to leave them. However, I cant do that :) So I wait until I see wax and then take it out...I don't go in and get it but if I see it then its coming out! I may go purchase these safety q-tips..it will probably make it easier to get it out when I see it.
  • My pedi recommended dropping in 1 TBSP warm water mixed with 1 TBSP hydrogen peroxide.

  • My pedi just said to leave the wax until it's visible outside, and then I can clean it off.
  • I use safety q tips or my clean finger. I can't leave the wax alone!

I only clean it when I see it and even then only on the outside. During bath time I clean my LO outside ear with my finger. That is that.
But there was this one time I went spelunking in one of her ears because she had a thick black dog hair wedged in there good. No wet cloth not q tips worked. I took tweezers and told my husband to hold her head and I went in there! That was scary.
  • I've read that it's bad to use q tips but I have to. He's has so much that I have to get rid of it every 3 days or people start to tell me it's gross.
  • I only use qtips to clean outside of her ear hole, I don't go in there. What I found works for me is to wipe up with a dry one, then use a damp one, then finish up with another dry.
