Weight Gain

So since my 7 week appointment 2weeks ago I've gained 5 lbs! I feel like I'm constantly eating to curb the nausea and drinking gingerale (I never drink soda usually). How are the scales looking for you ladies? Have any of you who have already been through this had a similar experience? How much did you ultimately end up gaining? My OB told me to try to keep it to 20-25 lbs which sounds insane at this point. I started at 133 and am now 138 if that matters.

Re: Weight Gain

  • To be honest I haven't checked in weeks, I'm focusing on keeping the nausea under control and if that means eating simple carbs that's what I'm doing. At this point there's so much bloating, etc. that it may not be that accurate anyway. My coworker is due at the end of a Feb and she gained more of her weight at the beginning.

  • I wouldn't stress too much about weight gain at this point.  Your numbers on the scale are going to be inflated due to water retention and bloat.  With my first, since I am classified as obese, my Dr. gave me a 14 pound limit.  Although it seemed impossible at first, after the 1st trimester was over, I dropped like 10 pounds from losing all the bloat.  I ended up only gaining 9 total from my pre-pregnancy weight.

  • Since I got pregnant I've gained about 4 pounds. They say it's normal to gain about 5 lbs in the first trimester!
  • I've gained about 5 lbs too. I am constantly eating due to nausea too. I'm hoping it doesn't get out of control since I gained 40 last time

  • I haven't weighed myself at home but I had dating ultrasounds on 12/15 and 12/31 and between that time lost 7 lbs :-(
This happened in my first pregnancy too
  • 20-25 seems pretty low of your starting weight is 133? Is there a reason your OB said only 20-25? For a healthy/normal weight generally it's 30-35 pounds.

I was so worried with my son that I couldn't relax the whole time about gaining weight. This time I want to do it differently. Just trust your body and do the best you can
  • I wouldn't worry. My first pregnancy I think I gained closed to 12 pounds in the first trimester. I was in the lower 120's on that one. My dr. said 25-30 pounds and I had no clue how I was going to keep it in that range. But it really slowed in the second trimester. Carbs were the only thing that kept me from throwing up, so that is what I ate.

I'm starting higher this go round, but am not even weighing myself during the first trimester. Just do what feels right for your body, maintain your exercise routine if you have one, and you'll be good!

  • My weight fluctuates like crazy because of the bloat, but I think I've gained around 3 lbs (I'll be 9 weeks tomorrow for reference). I'm on the higher end of the "healthy" range for my height. But all I've been able to eat lately is carbs and cheese. I've finally graduated to PB&J and salads, so hopefully that will help. I've heard 3-7 lbs in first tri is perfectly healthy so I'm going to focus these next few weeks on eating only the things my body actually needs.

Also, I'm convinced at least 1 of those pounds ended up in my boobs. Finally.

  • Don't worry about it. I've know women that have gained 60 lbs and some only 15. EVERYONE is different and so are doctors! If you're eating healthy you're doing what is best for you and baby!
  • I haven't gained any yet (though I look about 10 lbs heavier thanks to bloat)! With DS I didn't start gaining until I was around 18 weeks, and then it came on pretty steadily. I ended up gaining 30 when all was said and done and 25-35 is the recommended amount so I was happy with that.

Some gain more in the beginning, some more later. As long as you're eating relatively well (give yourself a break if only certain things sound good) and staying active, trust your body to do what it needs to do.
