Any plus size mom's?

Hello ladies,

Just wondering if anyone out there is a plus size mom? I definatly am considering my pre-pergnancy size is a 22 for my jeans.

How's your pregnancy going, do you find the symptoms are less then some of the smaller mom's? Do you ever get anxious to see a baby bump and worried you won't due to size?

Anyone welcome to comment/answer :)

Re: Any plus size mom's?

  • I was a 12/14 pre-pregnancy - is that considered plus size? I never know.
  • I'm a size 18/20 pre preg.  My symptoms are completely different than last time!  Last time I was sicker than anything my WHOLE pregnancy.  Now I have very very mild symptoms
  • Loading the player...
  • I was a 16/18 pre-pregnancy but I'm only 5'5".  I don't know if I would be a good judge of a normal pregnancy.  I have many high-risk complications. So far my symptoms seem to be pretty much the same as everyone else.  I am 15+4 but my uterus is measuring normal for about 20 weeks as is my fundal height.  This is also my 5th pregnancy so I popped pretty quickly.  I think I just look like I'm getting fatter but my SO and everyone at work says you can see it coming straight out and that I look pregnant.  It doesn't help that my hips and tailbone are killing me so I have already developed my own brand of pregnancy waddle.  I am also feeling slight movement but I do know what I am feeling, because of past pregnancies.

You will definitely see a bump.  It may be a little later than others, it was with my first and I was plus sized then as well, but you will see it.

  • Welp, I'll just assume I count as plus size. I was a bit smaller last go around but things I remember feeling then were:  a lot of RLP and really sore pelvic area anytime I did too much exercise. This time around I am bigger and noticing the pain coming way earlier this time. But I have started to feel the baby moving a bit - and I'm almost 17 weeks. No other complications/issues to report I don't think. :-) I'm always nervous for the GD test though. Both my babies were 10lbs + so my midwife sends me right to the longer version of the test.

  • I was a 14 prior to pregnancy so I'm borderline plus size. I'm actually smaller now though I was for either of my other pregnancies. I was doing a weight loss challenge right before pregnancy and lost 20lbs. I notice that I am more sore this time but I think that has more to do with getting older and chasing two kids around all day. I don't get to take daily naps and really rest anymore. I am noticing a bump earlier this time too. I'm hoping to keep my weight gain to minimum this pregnancy so can continue to lose weight after like I was prior to getting KU.

  • I have been a plus size girl my whole life.  I was an 18/20 but then I lost almost 17lbs for the ivf process.  So far I'm 18 weeks and I have gained about two lbs (the Obgyn only wants me to gain 15 lbs throughout the whole pregnancy).  The bump did appear a few weeks ago, and it was really exciting.  Most people can't tell I'm pregnant, since I tend to wear clothing that is a bit more loose to begin with(love the banded bottom tops since I'm not very tall and plus size designers seem to think all plus size ladies are at least 5'8")
I also find that I feel fuller faster than before.  I'm a FTM as well so I'm hoping the bump will get more noticeable. :)
  • I am 5'8" and a size 16 before pregnancy.
@laurenm2123 I could have written exactly what you wrote.  In fact, as I was reading it I had to double check that I hadn't and had just forgotten lol.

I came back to work after a two week break and several people noticed and told me that I definitely look pregnant, which I'm super excited about.  I was also worried that I would just look fat and not have an actual baby bump.
  • I'm definitely plus size at size 22 (sometimes 24). I have had a wonderful pregnancy so far! It took my DH and I almost 5 years to conceive naturally, and it happened right when we had pretty much gotten used to the idea of never having biological kids and we were looking into foster. We were surprised but So So happy! So far my worst issue is a nerve in my hip/thigh that burns and goes numb, but it only bothers me when I lay a certain way or stand for too long. I have had a tiny bit of heartburn, but nothing to take anything more than tums for. I'm at 18 weeks and I've only gained about a pound, so doc is pretty happy with me.I hope the rest of this pregnancy goes as well as the first part!
Oh, and I definitely have a bump. My husband thinks it's adorable! Still waiting to feel those baby kicks, but I'm a patient momma!
  • I'm a 5'9" and a size 16 before pregnancy and have gained about 12 lbs so far. I'm very nervous my OB will say something about the weight gain, but when I ask, he says that everything is fine so far. I'm constantly hungry! I'm hungry every two hours! I think so far I have some aches and pains in my back, but only because of the increased weight in my abdomen. And bump is definitely showing!

  • I am 5'7 and started my pregnancy at 226lbs. Now I'm at 204 thanks to horrific morning sickness. Still like a size 14/16. And barely showing at all. Even though I feel like I'm dying doctors say the little man is doing just fine.
  • I was a size 16/18 pre pregnancy and I'm 5'10". I've lost some weight so far due to nausea and food aversions. Funnily enough my aversions are to greasy fried foods and really sugary foods. So that helps. My cravings are anything fresh, fruits veggies etc.

I was only slightly smaller with my first, but I'm feeling more physical discomfort with this pregnancy. Probably because I keep getting sick.

Last time I had no complications due to my weight and so far everything is good this time too. My dad was super worried about my weight for my first pregnancy, but when I asked my dr about it she actually laughed and said "please don't worry about your weight."

I actually have been buying from Lane Bryant just going up a size or two in tops. Bought a pair of jeans from Motherhood but they are too big now...go figure...I'm mostly in leggings and tunic style tops--easy to find in larger plus size and def comfortable, if you're in a colder region I'd invest in a maternity coat! In the south I can get away with layering shirts, cardigans and jackets. Old Navy has been good to me so had Target!! So far...ask me again in April lol. I have lots of maxi dresses hoping I can bust those out in March lol
  • Motherhood Maternity, Old Navy, Gap, Target.... I'm fortunate in that an XL or 16 generally fits and is the largest size in "regular".

Target has a cute plus size line Ava + Viv in which you could go up a size too.

  • I've gotten my maternity clothes at Motherhood Maternity.  I was really worried about clothes not fitting, but my mom and I went and we had so much fun.  I think it was one of the most fun shopping trips we've had in a long time.  In the dressing room, they had a "bump pillow" so you could make sure the clothes would fit once your bump got huge.  It was SO much fun to see what I could look like as baby gets bigger!
  • Plus size Momma to be here as well! I have been on a weight loss journey the last 5 years and am currently a solid size 16. The doctor said its still safe for me to lose up to 15 pounds during the pregnancy and I'm happy with that. I lost 6 pounds in the first trimester, but have paused here since my appetite came back. I'm hoping to atleast not gain any weight, which so far I'm doing great at! I am 19 weeks today! Almost half way! All of my symptoms have been pretty normal compared to the "smaller" moms. I feel very lucky to have such a "normal" pregnancy so far! I even passed my 1 hour early glucose test!

I know it's gonna take longer for me to show and longer to feel baby kick, but man am I anxious for it!!

Congratulations to all of you beautiful ladies!
  • I'm short and round and have had the worry that I'll just look fatter and never actually pregnant. I'm 5'2" and a size 22/24 pre preg. Last year I got really healthy and active and lost 65 pounds but gained a lot of it back on clomid ttc. I'm not as active as I was and it's a huge source of frustration for me. I definitely believe that people are beautiful in all shapes and sizes, it's just hard to apply to myself.

I gained 8 lbs first trimester then lost 6 over the course of 2 weeks because I was sick. I go for an appt tomorrow and I'll see what's happened since before Christmas. I've had a little nausea and a lot of food aversions. I had an episode of bleeding the day after Christmas and apparently am fine. Some cramping, but not a lot. Heartburn in the middle of the night and trouble sleeping.

I've gotten maternity clothes at Motherhood and I really like them.

Oh, and I was a 44DD pre preg and am already a 44H. I'm terrified they're going to get so big I won't be able to find a bra that fits.
  • Im 15 wks 5 days 5'10 and about a size 18 270lbs depending on brand i cant find anything at all because not only am i big but im also tall i have been stuck in leggings and sweat pants. It sucks being tall and plus sized everything thats size 18 or so is always so short why is that?
  • I love this thread! I was a 16/18 pre-pregnancy. I definitely am showing, but in a way that could be construed as too many Christmas cookies OR pregnancy. It turns out I LOVE maternity pants. Because I've always carried most of my extra weight right around my middle, and maternity pants already account for that big middle, I actually wear a size or two smaller in maternity clothes!
However comfortable however, they do make the belly look more like a prego belly than a cookie belly and I'm not sure I'm ready for that yet.
I took an early GD test and I'm in the clear. Will have to do another in 2 months probably. I intend to start prenatal yoga tomorrow too, since I am getting achy.
  • @bedinabelinda I am thinking about starting prenatal yoga too! I figure it will definitely help with the aches... & it couldn't hurt to stay active!

I am 5'2 and a size 16 pre-pregnancy. I feared that I would just look extra chunky instead of pregnant, but here I am at 17w and sporting my very own bump! DH loves it! & so do I  <3 You will all get your own bumps too!! As far as symptoms, I was nauseous & exhausted all throughout first trimester. That has lessened thankfully, but now my lower back and breasts are killing me everyday. I did just start to feel my little one flutter though, so the pain is worth it!

Something on my mind: So my butt is VERY voluptuous (big lol) and my biggest fear is that my bump is just going to get bigger & bigger and as I continue to expand I won't be able to fit behind the steering wheel in my car... LOL is this an irrational fear? Anyone else with me?
  • @ShawnaG123 LOL I totally have this fear as well! I also sometimes picture myself getting stuck while trying to get out of the car. hahaha I'm hoping it's irrational, though.

I'm 5'7" and pre-pregnancy size 14 to 16. I've been bigger and smaller, but consistantly I've had large thighs, arms, and breasts. I still have those now with the addition of a rapidly growing round belly but thankfully never experienced morning sickness. :-)

I found the best fitting maternity pants at Target so far. Kohls were nicer, but the XL was a little too big and makes my butt look saggy (it's large, but not droopy). I also shopped at Torrid and bought some empire waste shirts on sale in a size or two bigger (because my breasts struggle to fit into a normal XL). I think regular/ non-maternity plus sized stores might be the way to go for larger ladies because I have been finding the pickings slim, too expensive, or non-existent elsewhere. Also, Old Navy carries up to, I think, a maternity XXXL, but at least an XXL which is a size 20-24, I believe.

Also, are any of you having luck with maternity bras? I was a 34g, went up to a 38f, and now my formally new bras are too tight. I hesitate to buy online without trying on, and all of the bras start at around $55 (expensive when you keep buying new ones every two months).  Motherhood is a drive from me, but it's worth it if they have bras that fit, so any input would be marvelous.

  • @MistKeeper I bought maternity bras last time, and they were a total waste of money. I need a structured underwire bra, and maternity bras just didn't work for me. There's no reason you can't wear your regular style of bra during pregnancy as long as it fits properly (get good measurements!). I kept an eye out for a deal and bought a few new Cacique bras at my current size (for me this time, at least so far, I'm measuring the same band size but up a cup).

  • I love cacique bras too! I would not but maternity bras. Probably won't commit too much money to nursing bras either until I know it's going to work out.
I'm a size 18 and am still super nervous about going into this pregnancy so overweight. My Dr is very encouraging and supportive but I'm a worrier so I'm questioning every teeny tiny symptom I have. I'm so paranoid of gaining as much weight with this one as I did with dd. :anguished:
  • Prenatal yoga totally helps with the aches and pains. If you do it in the morning, you will feel great and very limber all day!

I was a size 16 5'6" pre pregnancy. I felt baby move for the first time 2 weeks ago and DH even felt it a few nights ago to my surprise! My biggest issue has been sore and growing boobs. Soma had a good deal on bras before Christmas, buy 2 for $58, so I picked up 2 great lined with underwire nursing bras. Also got one on the clearance rack for 24. I knew my size had gone up as my bra no longer fit, but I hadn't gained much weight yet. The consultant measured me and I had gone from a 40c to a 40dd-ddd. Um, I sure hope these things will stop growing soon! I have to sleep in a sleeper maternity bra at night because they get in the way and hurt!

Also, prenatal yoga helps! I need to do it more often, but when I do it loosens things up and helps a lot with aches and tightness.

Edited to add that I like Motherhood maternity jeans and work trousers. They fit snuggly and don't fall down as much as my target jeans do. I picked some up at Burlington and Gordmans.
  • I just wanted to say that I really like this thread. I got a maternity bra from Motherhood and I like it just fine.
  • I bought a maternity bra at Motherhood back in October and the straps are majorly stretched out. I probably won't buy another from there for that reason. Thanks for the Soma suggestion!

  • @laurenm2123 I just bought a pair at Torrid on sale for $20. I have 18" calves. The pair I bought are knee high, but unfortunately have absolutely NO grip on the bottom. Torrid also carries wide sizes in abundance, which is essential for my feet's happiness.  I also shop at Zappos (but then you're looking at $100 and over usually).
  • I bought a knee high pair of leather Lucky Brand boots last year that weren't labeled as wide calf, but had a slight stretchy panel in the back and they are awesome! I got them at Von Maur department store half off for about $100. I never spend that much on shoes, but these are so comfy and so well built they will last me another few seasons easily. I think Lucky makes wide calf boots too. I'm normally wide calf, even had to get custom English riding boots made when I was a teenager (not plus sized then) so I have dealt with this conundrum my whole life. When I find good boots that fit its a miracle.
  • How is everyone doing out there? Anyone starting to show? Feeling comfortable with your bump?? I think my bump is starting to show! I don't think other people notice yet but I can definitely tell! Starting to feel little movements too which are so exciting!!I can't wait until my husband can feel the baby!! I'm sure that's a few weeks out though!
  • How is everyone doing on weight gain?  Im only 21 weeks and have already gained like 16 pounds and its so depressing. Any tips on weight control.

Doing well- starting to look pregnant! Although I'm sure some people just think I'm eating too much!

I I am actually still down 2 pounds from the 10 I had lost (nausea & serious food aversions). My MD only wanted me to gain 15 so with 20 weeks left to go I'm hoping I can accomplish that!

    how is everyone else feeling?
