Perinatologist?

Back on 12/23 I had an US, I was 20w5d. The technician was having a heck of a time getting the proper measurements and images she wanted/needed. When I left her she said I'd have a follow-up appointment with her in 1-2 weeks to try again. Afterwards, when I was in the room with my doctor she said another US technician looked at what my tech had gotten and recommended I go to the hospital to use one of their better machines for a level 2 US. I asked my doctor if there was anything I should be worried about and she said no. Fast forward a week, (because of the holidays) a scheduling assistant for the hospital finally called to schedule my appointment. She said I would be seeing a perinatologist for my level 2 US. Since that's the first "label" I'd heard I started googling, which was a big mistake. I'm trying not to psych myself out since my doctor said I there was nothing to worry about, but considering my appointment is this Friday morning it's starting to creep in. So, my question is have any of you had this experience or something similar?

Re: Perinatologist?

  • My OB sent me to a high risk pregnancy facility to do my level 2 US. They do this because the machines and techs are better quality than the in office US. The techs are trained more too. I wouldn't worry about this unless they told you they saw something they wanted to look at further which your doc would have had to tell you. Don't stress and look forward to seeing your LO again!

  • I would think that if that if your doctor had a clear concern, that she would communicate that to you.  Try to think of this as a good thing because your baby is being looked at very closely.

When is your appointment?  FX'd for good results!
  • I went straight to a perinatologist for my NT scan and bloodwork as well as my anatomy scan and bloodwork. I'm not considered high risk. I only saw a tech for dating US and for one other US which was ordered since my ob couldn't find the heartbeat on a Doppler. I personally wouldn't be concerned, like pp have said these Drs have better equipment to see what they're looking for more easily. Good luck

  • I'm in the same situation with the repeat ultrasound but my OB decided not to send me to a perinatologist.  The ultrasound tech at my 20 week scan couldn't get decent heart pictures due to position (LO was lying face down).  Of course, I only found this out when I called about my ultrasound report.  The OB is not worried and they didn't see anything abnormal but they want to get better pictures.  At first, they said they would rescan in 4-6 weeks but I begged them to do it sooner since I'm so anxious about it.  I made an appointment for this Friday at 1 pm at a medical imaging facility.  Their equipment is much more advanced and even has 3-D.  Hopefully they will get all of the pictures this time.  I'll be a nervous wreck until I get the confirmation that everything is normal.
It's actually pretty common to have to go back for more pictures so try not to worry.  Friday will be here before we know it.  Please update afterward!
  • I went to the perinatologist for my NT and anatomy scans. My doctors send their patients there because that is the hospital they are affiliated with and they have better equipment! I have had ultrasounds at the doctors office too and they image quality is nowhere near is good, so they send us out for the important stuff :)
  • I'm hoping they'll do at 3D scan so we can get a really good look at LO!

I wouldn't be worried. I had my level 2 yesterday at the perinatal clinic, mostly because DD was born with a heart defect (that was caught at 34 weeks at a level 2 us) and I have an autoimmune disease. This baby appears healthy! They are so knowledgeable since the only people they work with are prego moms. I would agree the techs seem to know more and the equipment is better. Good luck, if anything you will be in the best of care!
  • UPDATE: saw the perinatologist today and while LO was being uncooperative again they did get about 90% of the pictures and measurements they wanted, but I have to go back in a month to see him again just to get more measurements. He kept stressing that this was not some code for a defect or a potential defect. Baby is developing right on schedule and everything looks normal and healthy. I had a huge sigh of relief!!! Baby weight in at 1Ibs, 2oz today and doctor said in the 31percentile (not quite sure what that means). Happy Mumma here :)

@gemini2005how did your appointment go today?

It sounds like our lo's have a lot in common- both of them enjoy giving the ultrasound tech a hard time!  I was told they got all of the heart pictures although it took a while but I know the tech was VERY thorough.  I'm still waiting on the radiologist report which was suppose to be sent to my doctor and my cousin who is an OB.  Hopefully,I will hear from someone today or tomorrow.
Im so glad you got good news today and they got more measurements.  Just think of the awesome baby photo album your DS will have by the time he's born with all of the ultrasounds haha!
