I take progesterone 200mg at bedtime (vaginal suppository). I took it every cycle because my 7 DPO level was 1.5 (anovulatory, but an u/s confirmed I ovulated. low level was attributed to my 8 day LP).
As I'm now pregnant, I am still taking my progesterone. My REI said to stop taking it at 8 weeks. My midwife said to stop taking it at 10 weeks. My OB said to stop taking it at 12 weeks.
So I'm curious - when did you stop? I don't want to keep taking something I don't need, but I don't want to stop prematurely and have a miscarriage.
I'm currently on PIO, and today was my graduation appt at the RE. They said take my last dose of PIO tonight, then tomorrow start the suppositories until 10w. This is my 2nd IVF pregnancy, and last time I stayed on PIO until 10w, so for my RE 10w seems to be the magic number.
If it helps, my Midwife actually gave me the reason for 12 weeks (I'm almost 9 and she told me I'll be stopping at 12). She said the reason you stop at 12 weeks is because by the start of the second trimester, the placenta has taken over the production of progesterone, so the supplement is no longer necessary. If you stop too early, you'll be stopping before the placenta is developed enough to perform this important function. Of course, I'm just following the guidance of my Midwife. I'm sorry you've gotten so much mixed information! Also, my progesterone was 11.6, so it wasn't abnormally low, just lower than they like to see.

Technically each trimester is 13.3 weeks so I don't technically count 12 weeks as the start of my second trimester. I think we take progesterone for so long just to "be safe." All research has shown that hCG declines at 2 months which corresponds to the degeneration of corpus luteum and inability of corpus luteum to secrete progesterone and estrogen. However, by 7th week of pregnancy, the placenta had already begun to gradually take over the endocrine function of corpus luteum. The placenta should fully take over by 10 weeks because the corpus luteum is completely gone by then.
I was told by my RE that the placenta takes over progesterone production at 8.5 weeks. She gives it an extra week and has me stop it at 9.5 weeks and come in for a progesterone level 24 hours after stopping it. I have an appointment on Thursday at 9w5d so I take my last dose tomorrow evening. I'm so nervous to stop it so I'm glad they are checking a level!
I was always told 12-13 weeks so that placenta function can take over. My Dr always said that it doesn't hurt to take it and it's better safe than sorry. There are a lot of mixed opinions about it. I will take until 13 weeks just because it will make me feel better.
My OB said at 10 weeks the placenta should kick in and provide the progesterone. So I think they say to take for a few weeks after that just to be safe/sure.
Lurking from May 16. My RE said I could stop taking it at 10 weeks however I was too afraid to because my progesterone was only 7 when I got my bfp so my OB let me take it until 13 weeks. I had no bleeding or anything when I went off of it
I have enough 200mg capsules to take it until the start of 11 weeks. Then I have a week's supply of 100mg capsules so I'll probably take those too! Then stop at 12 weeks. Sorry RE... I'm too paranoid to stop at 8 weeks! My progesterone level was only 1.5!!!
Mine said around 10 weeks. I have my next appt at 10w2d so I'll keep taking it until the appt and see what she says. I have a pretty big supply so I could easily take it until 12 weeks just to be safe.
Sometimes it freaks me out more that I'm taking it because I feel like if something were to be going wrong I wouldn't know it. Does anyone else feel this way? I also am constantly questioning if my symptoms are pregnancy related or just because of the progesterone.

Yep! I feel the same way!! I stopped it for a day this week to get a level checked and was so relieved my boobs were still sore without it! My level ended up being borderline so they are keeping me on it for another week and checking again after that.
I am 10w today and my RE said to stop today. I don't have an appt with my regular obgyn (I "graduated" from my fertility clinic on Monday) until 1/19, so I'm scared! But they assured me that the placenta should have already taken over and I'll be fine. Here's hoping they're right-- they haven't steered me wrong so far!
I took my last 200mg progesterone at 10 weeks 2 weeks. I took a 100mg capsule at 10 weeks 3 days. I have not had any for 3 nights and counting. So far so good! I don't notice any difference.
I stopped at 10 weeks last pregnancy. My RE told me he wants me on them at least one week longer than my latest miscarriage which was at 9w2d. I'm 10w1d and have 5 days left in my box. I'll finish those up and then happily be done.

These responses are such a relief to me! We had a pharmacy mess up where the pharmacist was out of stock, saw the price and that it wasn't covered by insurance and assumed I wouldn't want it. Therefore, she didn't order it. No phone call to check. Nothing. I went to pick it up last night and was told about this. She said it wouldn't come in until Monday around 1pm. My last applicator will be used Saturday when I turn 11 weeks. So, I'd miss Sunday's dose and take Monday's late. My symptoms have dropped off so much, I figured the placenta took over and I likely don't need it anymore. The plan from my fertility dr was to continue through the first trimester. I'm still waiting on a call back from the doctor to see if she has any samples, but this discussion has made me feel much better about my situation! Thanks ladies!

14 weeks with my first. Mine "dropped" from 30 to 10.5 at 7 weeks so I was prescribed it then. I think the fertility doc wrote an Rx to get it through 11 weeks and I didn't feel comfortable with that. I found a way to get 2 more weeks. Even my midwife said 13 weeks. I think the placenta takes over sometime around 12-13 weeks so I wanted full coverage u too then. This time I think I will take it the full 14 weeks and stop just at the start of or right before 15 weeks. (That is my designation of first trimester).
