Zofran?

I went to the ER for extreme morning sickness, they proscribed B6 and Zofran. The doctor said I could really take as many as I want because it only absorbs about 1/2 the dose. He prescribed 8mg every 6 hours. There were a couple times I had an hour or 2 overlap because I forgot when I took it. I found out that there is a lawsuit against its makers. Is it a safe drug? Have you used it?

Re: Zofran?

  • Hey! I am currently 23 weeks, and I had severe morning (all day) sickness until I was about 20 weeks. I went to the ER 7+ times for IV fluids after being dehydrated. They did prescribe zofran at first but then I was reading all the stuff about it online with the lawsuits and stuff. Everyone will tell you that they changed the medicine so those birth defects supposedly don't happen now, but I still personally don't trust it. I am on diclegis, which is similar to a unison/b6 combination, and it is taken as a preventative medication rather than as-needed. Obviously every pregnancy is different and different medications will work better with different people, but I feel better overall about my decision to take diclegis. It is an expensive medication and most insurance companies won't cover it until you have tried zofran first, but luckily my OB/GYN has boxes and boxes of samples of diclegis and they have been able to give me several boxes.

  • I take it. I havr taken with with all 3 pregnancies. I am a RN working on my masters to be a FNP. I have read the actual research and the FDA reports, not just some lawyers website or a blog/message board.
I am very comfortable taking it, with my diclegis.
    Thank God for Raid.

  • There is nothing wrong with taking zofran for nausea when pregnant. I am a pharmacist, who works in the hospital. Zofran is very common to give in pregnancy and completely safe. I just started having morning sickness this week. If things continue the way they are, I may need to contact my OB about getting some as well.
  • I agree with @PugsandKisses If you want to do actual research on it you can't read the blogs or lawyers websites because those are going to push for the side that they are supporting. For me it is a must. There is not another medication that has helped. I tried unisom b6 kind of thing that didn't help at all. But this is a decision you personally have to make after weighing out the risks and benefits. I have HG and for me it is more important to not be hospitalized for my pregnancy and I want to hold food and liquid down so that I'm not harming my baby by being constantly dehydrated. The small risks of zofran do not out weigh the benefits of a healthy me and healthy baby. If you are uncomfortable with it I recommend talking to your doctor about other medications that you can try!
  • I took Zofran while pregnant and my son is perfectly healthy.  If I have persistent nausea in my next pregnancy, I won't hesitate to take it again.

Try to ignore the shock value of the blog posts and attorneys' advertisements and do your own REAL research.  Look for medical journals and/or online articles from reputable teaching hospitals.  Zofran is safe during pregnancy when used as directed. Its benefits outweigh its risks, especially in the case of moderate to severe pregnancy sickness (HG).
