Pregnant after 35

Hey there! We should do a weekly check in

Hi fellow TTC over 35 ladies! So excited to be here and share this journey with you. For some reason I fell silly doing an intro here when it seems like it's just us over here.  A little about me I'm 35, my DH is 36 I got my BFP after 6 cycles TTC and a MC a year ago. I really hope this baby stays and we get to start our parenthood journey.

We should definitely do a weekly check in, maybe something like:

How far along are you?

How are you feeling?

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?)

Rants/Raves/Questions

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January?

Re: Hey there! We should do a weekly check in

  • Love it! :)  And welcome @createillumination.

How far along are you? 5w5d

How are you feeling? Okay, starting to have a few hours of nausea each afternoon.  Acne is improving.  Gas is awful.  Boobs are sore and my daughter has unerring accuracy in bumping them.

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?)  Just waiting for my scan at 7 weeks to find out how many babies are in there.  Hoping for good news!!

    Rants/Raves/Questions - Nothing right now

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January?  To try to organize and purge some of my daughter's toys/stuff.  I'd also like to get her room painted so we can start the process of moving her in prior to baby coming and needing her crib.

    Yay!

How far along are you? 4w1d

How are you feeling? Kind weird and spacey, and tired of course. My spotting stopped which is really nice. Super gas-y and my boobs are sore and huge! I have some cramping on and off and wicked insomnia, I'm waking up at 2,3 or 4am and having a hard time falling back asleep.

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?) I will get in touch with the midwives when I get back in town next week. I have to figure out what will be the best way for me to get the maternity 21 test for the lowest price, I might have to do an appointment with and OB to get it covered by insurance.

Rants/Raves/Questions: I am so excited to go to mexico tomorrow but kind of sad I won't get to have margaritas, but really I'd only have 1 or 2 the whole week so I won't be missing much.

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January? I have this one junk drawer I have been thinking about cleaning out for months, Let January be the month! I also need to get back to doing more yoga, I have some classes I need to use at a studio before the end of the month. I do most of my practice at home but it is always great to be inspired by others.

  • Thanks for getting this started @createillumination ! It's been a while since I graduated from the TTC after 35 board so I welcome the re-introduction to you all.

How far along are you? 17w5d

How are you feeling? I feel good - it's true what they say that 2nd trimester is awesome on the body. I'm finally starting to get a tiny bump, after a while of feeling self-conscious and a bit worried that it is taking me so much longer to "show" than a lot of women. I'm waiting to feel movement - nothing convincing yet. But I'm a first-time mom and I think my placenta is anterior (or at least it was at my NT scan at 13 weeks) so both of these things mean it might be a while.

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?) I have my "big" 18 week anatomy scan this week. I'm nervous. I study birth defects for a living so I know a little too much. This actually makes me more nervous than my first trimester genetic testing. I feel like this is the final big hurdle though.

Rants/Raves/Questions: I just want to say YAY again about all you ladies who are joining me on this crazy journey! I have felt like I didn't really have a home on TB since my BFP because this board has been dead and my BMB is overwhelming (there are sooooo many posters and I don't feel like I can really relate to most of them. I prefer a smaller group)

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January? It's going to be a very busy month at work. I have a lot to get done, catching up after the holidays plus some big deadlines and presentations. So I have to focus on that. I suspect this will be the month when my boss and coworkers learn about my pregnancy too (I've been waiting until after the anatomy scan).

  • @createillumination FYI if it looks like it will be a pain in the neck to get the MaterniT21 test covered through your midwife then try calling the company directly (Sequenom). I found their customer service line really helpful. They can run your insurance info and estimate any out-of-pocket expenses for you. They also offer a genetic counseling service so if you don't have access to that through your midwife or OB then they can probably help find a solution for you.

How far along are you? 6w today!

How are you feeling? Pretty well. Sore boobs, exhausted, ravenously hungry, light headed at times, and (TMI) horny as hell. I get worried sometimes that I don't have more symptoms, but that's totally normal for me as I've never had morning sickness in my pregnancies.

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?) First u/s is this Thursday! I'm simultaneously excited and terrified. My partner is going to be out of town, so I'm extra nervous to be going it alone if it's not good news. Crossing everything that I see a strong heartbeat, as that will put me at ease.

Rants/Raves/Questions - I find the first trimester very isolating. I'm a very private person and we didn't tell anyone but my best friend and sister that we were trying. After my 8w loss, I am doubly cautious about not sharing the news until at least after the first tri. But it's so difficult when it's all you can think about and yet no one around you knows. I also have to be very strategic about hanging out with friends because I enjoy social drinking and folks will be on to me pretty quickly if I'm not drinking when others are. I just find it all so stressful...

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January? I too would like to de-clutter. DS has a bunch of toys that he's outgrown that are clogging up the house. I have boxes of old baby stuff and maternity clothes in the basement that I'd like to sort through. If I get through 1/4 of it in January, I'll feel successful.

@createillumination - I too had terrible insomnia, where I would be up from 2-4am processing everything for the first week or so after I found it. It has largely subsided at this point, so hopefully it will only be short lived for you as well!
  • @Mamafesto I also felt really isolated first trimester. I didn't tell anyone except my husband about the pregnancy until 12 weeks. I avoided going out at all (I was definitely a social drinker before getting pregnant). Even now at almost 18 weeks only my immediate family and my two closest friends know. I found Internet forums tremendously helpful to get things off my chest, ask questions, and help cope with everything going through my mind during that time. So in other words - we're here for you!

  • @Mamafesto i feel the same way. I told people the first time around, but this time i'm not sure if i will. Only DH, mu acu and naturopath know right now. Worse still i never told my mom last time and she doesn't know i MC. I'll tell her about both when i feel comfortable in this pregnancy. But at least we all have each other for now!

Heyo! We do this on my monthly board and I think it's a great idea to do one here! I'll be 36 in April (EDD 7/6/16) and husband is 46. We TTC for 5 months and had a pos test in October!

How far along are you? 13w4d

How are you feeling? Currently a little headachy and tired. It's a beautiful crisp sunny New England day but I'm wiped after walking the dogs for a couple of miles and then a trip to Ikea and the supermarket. DH is watching the Pats and I so don't care lol!

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?) I have my first appt. With the OB tomorrow (midwife was @ 9weeks, Panorama and genetic screen @ 10 weeks) and I am nervous about my weight. I am really trying to be good about eating and exercise but I have still put on almost 20# since I found out I was preggo in Oct. That only leaves me 5 more lbs (according to the midwife) for the rest of the pregnancy. I am trying not to worry about it but I hate the shame I feel and I am concerned about GD.

Rants/Raves/Questions I am raving about a friend of mine who has generously given me ALL of her maternity clothes (she had baby #2 in May) and tons of baby stuff including a bjorn and a bassinet! I really want to do something nice for her. Was thinking about getting her and her husband a gift card to a restaurant and offering to sit the kids fora date night. What do you all think?

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January? My goal is to do at least 1 nesting project every weekend. So far so good! I went thru TONS of paperwork, threw stuff away and consolidated things so I can move my stuff out of the nursery. Also got the bassinet and a dresser for baby. Now just to set them up!
  • How far along are you?
    I'm about 8 wks

    How are you feeling?
Like I was run over by a truck and infested with an insatiable tapeworm.

    Any baby news?
Well I'm going tomorrow for a repeat u/s. I was measuring a few days behind before Christmas. Since I wasn't technically measuring 7 weeks yet they needed me to come back. A little nervous.
I'm also on progesterone pills for the past couple weeks.

    Rants/raves/questions:
Is anyone else on vaginal progesterone? A little tmi but how do you handle that and still having sex? I feel like things will be messing doing it before the meds but not sure how things would work doing the pills first.

    QTKY-
My goal for January is getting back on the WW track. I fell off the wagon for the holidays which I think is causing my sluggish feeling in addition to regular pregnancy stuff. I have a lot of weight to lose.

  • @jenniferk08 - you should have sex before you place the progesterone.  I'm relatively sure I remember being told the progesterone isn't especially good for your hubby so not to place prior to sex.  Good luck with your ultrasound tomorrow! Hope your LO has "caught up."

    20 weeks, 2 days

    How are you feeling?
Tired and starting to waddle but enjoying it!

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?)
We had our 20 week scan on Tuesday and they didn't get all of the heart pictures they needed so we have to have another full ultrasound next week.  I am kind of panicked but I've heard it's common.  We are going to a nicer facility with 3-d technology this time so at least we will get to see better pictures of LO.  I just hope everything is okay though.

    Rants/Raves/Questions
I was angry that the ultrasound tech didn't get the pictures of the heart.  The report said it was due to the baby's position yet the ultrasound only took 20 minutes max. and the tech never mentioned she couldn't get an angle she needed.  Also, I had to beg my doctor to let me have another scan next week instead of waiting the recommended 4-6 weeks.  I don't think I could handle waiting since it shouldn't be hard to document a normal heart at 20+ weeks.  I've been so upset about this...sorry for rambling!

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January
I'm going to try not to stress about things out of my control.  More specifically, I'm going to fake being easy-going until I actually am haha

    How are you feeling?

Pretty good! Some heartburn, some breast tenderness, some insomnia. Lots of exhaustion. Seeing 8:30 with my eye open is a challenge!

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?)

I'm excited to set up my first appt when I call my OB this morning. I remember it seeming like it took forever to get to that first appt. last time.

    Rants/Raves/Questions

Not now--I'm just thrilled to be here!

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January?

Drink water and stay active! I also want to carve a little time out of each day to spend time in prayer and reading the Bible. I tend to be anxious about things I have no real control over and I want to try to remain as calm as possible this pregnancy.
  • @gemini2005 Haha, I excel at faking being laid back. Lots of people say that I am, but those who know me well understand that I'm actually very high-strung. The outward appearance is an over-compensation for that. I do think it helps somewhat though.

  • @gemini2005 - it seems somewhat common to have to go back for another look at the heart.  And THEN, if they can't see it, they could always do a fetal echocardiogram.  Here's my two cents - if there were something majorly wrong, they'd be able to see that.  Mind you, I'm a NICU NP, NOT a cardiologist, but I read a lot of ultrasound and echo reports and it seems like the ones they can't visualize at 20 weeks usually end up normal.  Fingers crossed that is the case for you.

How are you feeling? Still nauseous, but it's getting more manageable.

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?) I got my blood drawn today for MaterniT21. I also bought my first maternity clothes this weekend. DH says I don't show, but whether it's bump or blump, I need stretchy waistbands!

Rants/Raves/Questions: I'm running out of the Diclegis samples my dr gave me, so I went to fill the prescription. Insurance wouldn't cover it, so it was going to be $857. Hell no. Looks like Unisom will have to do.

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January? Go back to the gym. I took most of December off due to feeling horribly nauseous.

One more thing: So this is kind of heavy... My DH found out yesterday that a congenital heart defect runs in his family. His father died of a heart attack at the age of 56, and his uncle and grandfather died young of heart attacks as well. My sister (a dr) looked at the medical info about DH's dad and his uncle a few years ago and said the heart attacks were for different reasons. But DH's aunt and cousin just got diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and it is likely that the others died of the same. DH can do a DNA test to find out if he has it. And I wonder about my future children as well. I've always been a little nervous about DH's family history, but now I'm scared.

  • Thanks for starting this @createillumination ! I've really missed doing the check-ins!

    How far along are you?
    I'm 8w4d

    How are you feeling?
Blah. Honestly, I've been really, really, really miserable. We just got home last night after traveling since Dec. 20. Barely anybody knew I was PG so I had to put on a good face and act like I was fine, even though I felt like barfing all the time. I added up all the driving times and I think I spent around 40 hours in the car. Ugh. My poor DH had to deal with my grumpy moodiness but he handled it pretty well! I had a few nasty headaches, some terrible cramps, nonstop nausea, moodiness, and yes, some (TMI) crazy horny urges thrown in there as well (DH said this made everything else worth it :-). Eating is a real struggle. I start off wildly hungry, fill a huge plate full of food, and then lose steam after a few bites. WTH?!?! Sadly, I keep craving all the foods I can't eat at all (I have a lot of food allergies). DH is going to try to make me versions I can eat but it's not the same.

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?)
Second ultrasound is this Friday and I'll be 9w1d. It's my first appointment with my obgyn (I was seeing my RE up until now). I'm so nervous and just praying that everything looks good. I guess based on my symptoms I'm still pregnant but I worry a lot since I've had 2 previous losses (although this is the farthest I've ever made it in a pregnancy!).

    Rants/Raves/Questions
It's interesting that several of you mention insomnia. I've battled with insomnia for the past 5 or so years but it's suddenly gone away! I easily fall asleep and stay asleep the whole night. I wake up at 7:30am, wide awake and ready to go (which is so unlike me!). Crazy. So I guess I can rejoice in some good things, right?

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January?
I have so many goals for this month! I definitely need to de-clutter (DH is a bit of a mad scientist and seems to thrive on clutter...sigh). Need to start looking at fiances and figuring out how we're going to survive since I'm not sure how much teaching I'll be able to do when I get further along (I teach aerial arts). We've been looking at opening my own studio (which I used to have in the past). This will allow me to do more admin. type work and less physically demanding work. We're also needing to figure out basic logistics, such as house, car, etc. Not sure if everything current will work for baby. So many changes! But I'm excited and so happy to be home after so much traveling!!

  • Thanks @jilligan14.  And as much as it sucks to feel so nauseous, it's a good sign. My nausea with my MMC dropped off significantly at 8w, which is likely when the heart stopped beating. • @CarrieandRoy, both my husband and I have heart murmurs along with most of our families, not as serious as what you're talking about I don't think. But my son was born with a vsd, a hole in his heart, dr's said he would likely need surgery in the first months of life. They told me this day 2 after an emergency CS, when I was a mess in the hospital. Anyway, I won't go into full details, but our dr's were great, his hole has closed significantly (was on meds for first few months), and now at 18 months we have a bouncy, bubbly boy who hasn't needed surgery yet. My point is, that ur dr's will be on the lookout from the start (while ur pregnant) and should look extra carefully during ur anatomy scan. I know it's scary to think about, here to chat if you ever want to.

Also I the insomniac subject, @jilligan14 too, I've had insomnia for 20 years, have always taken unisom, and it has drastically helped with my morning sickness! That went away 3 weeks ago, there is hope, hang in there ladies!

  • @CarrieandRoy - do you know what cardiac defect it is?  Also, I'm sure your OB will do this, but you should have a level II ultrasound at 20 weeks, not just the regular anatomy scan.  I'm sure this is so scary for you, but to be totally honest, knowing about something like a heart defect from the start is better because you can deliver in the right place and management of heart defects now is SO much different than it was even a few years ago - so much BETTER!!  Let me know if I can help!  HUGS!!

  • @CarrieandRoy --that is a lot to process. Just want to chime in with the others and say that it really is good that you can be armed with this knowledge and advocate for the best pre-natal scans, etc for your little one. I'm glad you guys can get your DH checked out too and make sure all is well there.

There's so much about pregnancy that is already anxiety inducing, though. I'm sorry you have this added to it.
  • @CarrieandRoy Everyone's given you good advice about the heart defect. I'll just chime in to ask if your OB office has a genetic counselor? (You may or may not have seen one before your MaterniT21 test). If one is available see if you can arrange to meet with them to go over your DH's family medical records. Depending on the type of heart defect and who is affected your LO may or may not be at risk. They will be able to make a recommendation about testing that your DH can have done and also let you know if a higher quality anatomy scan is important for your pregnancy. (Not all heart defects can be detected by prenatal ultrasound - this is particularly true for ones that can cause a problem later in life, which sounds like is the case in your DH's family). Sorry you guys are going through this - best wishes!

  • As @redheadbride15 said, this seems to be an issue that causes problems in the 40's-60's, so I'm not currently worried about the "baby" as much as I am about my husband dying young and my child (or children) being given the same fate. I don't know yet what specific CHD it is. We are waiting for DH's aunt to email us the details. The odds don't sound good, though, with DH's grandfather, father, uncle, aunt and cousin all having it. I believe there are one or two more aunts on that side, but at this point we don't know that they don't have it.

Sounds like maybe a genetic cardiomyopathy or heart rhythm problem. Most adult-onset genetic forms of heart disease are inherited such that your DH would have a 50/50 chance of being affected, given what you've told me about the other members of his family. The good news is that complications from many of these disorders can be prevented with early detection. Your best course of action would be to get your DH in to see a specialist (either a geneticist or a cardiologist) to be tested. I'm sure your sister has already made that suggestion though. Will be thinking of you!

  • How far along are you?
    barely 4 weeks

    How are you feeling?
The only real pregnancy symptoms that I've had are sore boobies. Otherwise, 99% of my discomfort is attributable to a horrendous cold!

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?)
I'm having my first betas run tomorrow morning. With my last miscarriage, they failed to double appropriately from the beginning so I'll be so happy if we make it over this first little hurdle.

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January?
Right now, given how sick my house has been, I'll be excited if we manage to get Christmas taken down by February :s
  • @redheadbride15, his aunt did say he had a 50/50 chance of having it. I wasn't sure if she came up with those odds on her own (given that one of his two parents is suspected to have had it) or if the dr told her that. I haven't talked with my sister yet. I'll contact her when I have the details. I can't believe his aunt hasn't sent them yet.

  • 1. How are you feeling? Nauseous, but the frequency of vomiting is starting to lessen. Tired, grumpy, gassy and bloated, I am not one of these women who glows I more glower through pregnancy.
    2. How far along are you? Hmm 11 weeks +1 or 2 days (need to ask MD my Edd again I should add forgetful to my symptom list :))
    3. Baby news? Having my next appointment and IPS US Monday hoping to hear a HB then.
    4. Goal for January? To hopefully feel a bit better and re-engage a bit with family friends/hobbies. I tend to struggle so much with the nausea and vomiting that isolate myself a bit.

CarrieandRoy house you get good news my family had similar screening for a genetic cardiomyopathy a few years ago iut was stressful waiting to find out.

  • Since @emsmama15 and @redheadbride15 seemed interested in the details, I found out it is a mutation in the LMNA gene that causes dilated cardiomyopathy. It can affect you at any age, but usually not until the 40's.

  • @CarrieandRoy Yes, that's one of the more common inherited cardiomyopathies, and it can also cause heart rhythm issues. The scary complications are often preventable if it's detected early though - by drugs and in many cases a pacemaker. I hope you can get your husband seen by a cardiologist soon! I'll be thinking of you.

  • @CarrieandRoy my husband has a similar family history.  His mom has major congenital heart defects and he had a younger brother who died shortly after birth.  There are other various heart issues scattered through his extended family.  We thought my husband had missed any defects, but in February he had a stroke and in the process we learned he also has a congenital valve defect.  It's being treated and in some ways, we're lucky his stroke was mild and they discovered it without lasting medical consequences but it's definitely on my mind a lot and they are planning to do some more tests with this baby and a more in-depth ultrasounds.

To my knowledge, our older son doesn't have any issues but the only signs of my husband's defect were intermittent atrial fibrillation so 99% of the time during a test, his heart looks fine. I can tell you I already know I'm going to turn into crazy overprotective mom at sports physicals!  It's been a scary year but after lots of tests and appointments and medication for a blood thinner my husband is in a much safer place than he was a year ago but it was a long, scary process.  I'm grateful they can now do so much during pregnancy and shortly after birth for babies who do have heart problems but it's still stressful, especially when you're worried about a husband and a baby at the same time!
  • I'm glad you got more information, @CarrieandRoy I hope your DH can get in to see a specialist soon and that you all can get more answers about making sure he and baby stay healthy!
  • Thanks everyone. @redheadbride15, DH's aunt and cousin both got pacemakers. I thought that was an open-heart surgery, but I just googled it and it isn't. Most patients go home in 24 hours. Whew! Fingers crossed DH doesn't have the mutation and we won't have to worry about it, but I'm glad there are things that can prolong his life if he does. I wish we could have done the same for his dad. I never got to meet him.

@alitria, I'm so sorry you have heart defects in your family as well. I wish we could put protective bubbles around our loved ones.

  •  I'm a newbie here!!!

How far along are you? Just got a + test so I'm 4 wks and still not believing it.

How are you feeling?  Feeling NOT pregnant. so weird. Can't wait for winter to be over. I hate cold weather.

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?) No appts scheduled yet (I'm waiting until 6wks since they will likely tell me to come back at 6wks for ultrasound. Trying to hoard my leave at work. Requested progesterone and received it via phone, so that's good)

Rants/Raves/Questions Just wondering how being 35+ will be different from my prior pregnancy.

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January? I have SO many! Organize the piles of paperwork that need to be filed/scanned/thrown away/shredded. List some old maternity clothes on ebay or craigslist (can't fit into size S anymore, sad!). Work on setting my kids room up as a "big kid room" and get rid of the toddler stuff.

  • welcome, @skooterblenny and congratulations! I have only ever been pregnant over 35, so I don't have a point of comparison, but I will say that my OB never made me feel "AMA." She offered testing, but never pushed it if I didn't want it, etc. I had a great experience last time and hope to have a great experience this time too. I hope the same for you!
  • Hi all - been lurking for a bit hoping for my BFP and got it this morning! I miscarried in August and we have been trying since October. Hoping this one sticks :-)

How far along are you? Barely 5 wks

How are you feeling? Just tired, a little indigestion here and there

Any baby news (tests results/scans/upcoming appointments?) just POAS this morning. hubby and I high fived.

Rants/Raves/Questions - wondering when to tell people? With my last pregnancy we had to tell people we were pregnant but miscarried in the same breath (I was only 10 wks but baby stopped growing at 7.5 wks). I didn't even get to tell my mom. Do you ladies tell anyone right away or are you superstitious like me?

GTKY: What is one goal you have for the month of January? Be super healthy for both me and baby!
