Vomiting during labor?

Does everyone vomit or have terrible nausea durning labor. And if so, did you get anti-nausea meds? I have a phobia of vomiting. I seriously have had panic attacks over the fear of nausea and vomiting. I have not puked this pregnancy and had only a week of morning sickness in the first trimester. I haven't thought of this until like just now.

I got nauseas with this LO, but I didn't actually vomit with either of my girls. I was given meds for heartburn when I asked which helped. It may happen, it may not. Talk about what your options are for meds during labor and try putting it on your birth plan with your provider.

I'm wondering the same. I have the same phobia. I panic every time I get nauseous. I'm so scared that I'm going to be nauseous during labor, I'm not even afraid of the contactions Or labor. I know those things are considered worse but I hate puking.

I did throw up as I entered transition with my first. I got nauseas with my second at the same time, but I didn't actually vomit. Honestly - you've got so much else going on with your body, nausea really doesn't seem like much. (I also HATE puking/feeling nauseated)

It can happen during transition but I don't think it's common enough to stress over. I threw up right before pushing with my first, with my second no nausea or vomitting- my transition weirdness was that I got the shakes.

I know vomiting does happen during labor not everyone tho. This is #3 for me and although I did have nausea in the first tri I did not have nausea or vomit with either of my previous labors.

I vomited after they gave me some pain meds but it was definitely from the meds, not labor.

I didn't throw up during labor with my daughter, nor did I feel nauseous.

I didn't have any nausea or vomiting during labor with DS. However, I didn't get any IV pain meds which I think tends to cause nausea/vomiting in a lot of people (I didn't go med free, had an epidural).

I went med-free, so I can't speak for whether or not meds will make you nauseous. But, I had no nausea or vomiting throughout my entire birthing day (4am to 10:45pm). I also have panic attacks about nausea. Have ever since I was little. First tri was not good to me haha

I threw up a couple of times but I blame it on the reflux. I was induced and the would only give me so much ranitidine for it. The second time I was right about to push so they finally gave me anti nausea meds through my IV. Honestly though I didn't care. I was in so much pain nothing mattered!

I threw up during both my previous labors during transition. I didn't get anything for nausea because it came on so quick and after I vomited I wasn't nauseous anymore.

natural labor with no meds here. I did throw up once early on. I didn't feel sick but pretty suddenly knew I was going to be sick. It was before I went to the birthing center and I had plenty of time to get to the bathroom. As soon as I threw up I felt better and was never sick again.

one of my best friends had a home birth and spent the first couple of hours of labor throwing up during her first pregnancy. She said she didn't get sick at all during her second.... 

Guess it is different for everyone. I think most hospitals will give you anti-nausea medication.

I threw up once during pushing I think simply from the stress on my body and once during recovery. Neither were a big deal and since I had basically nothing in my system it didn't bother me. As people said there is so much going on, it's not worth stressing about!

I threw up just after we got to the hospital with my first. It was when labor got really intense. I didn't use any meds but it wasn't that I felt nauseous it just came on quickly and the nurse helped me immediately so it kind of happened and I forgot about it.

Started feeling nauseous with DD2 , after I got the epidural. Pretty sure it was from having them up it so many times as she was coming down. I get sick off of any kind of painkiller ( vicodin , etc) but just ask for some Zofran. They gave me some and I was good to go

I asked this same question a few months ago, because like you this is my biggest fear.  I've also "researched" (i.e. Google University) this a lot (FTM).  I had the stomach flu last year and was nauseous and vomiting for 4 days with no relief.  From everything I have read it seems (generally speaking) (1) lots of people do not get nauseous at all, (2) for those who do, for some it is because of the pain meds and not the actual labor, (3) for those who do from the actual labor, it is often during transition (meaning you are almost done) and/or you get nauseous and then you vomit quickly and feel better right away.

I threw up several times but I had to have a magnesium drip which caused it because of my high bp so not sure how it would have been without it.

My birth class teacher said it was mostly people who vomit often who do so in labor. If you haven't had much morning sickness during pregnancy chances are you probably won't during labor either.

@claireloSC I'm very interested to see what that means for me since I haven't had a single second of morning sickness in pregnancy but vomit several times each month when I get my period.

I didn't vomit with either of my two older kids. No MS with DD and 9 months of it, even with zofran, with DS. Medicated inductions with both. My sister vomited with both of hers - first was medicated and on mag sulfate, second was unmedicated, induced with both. So I think it just varies.

I had really bad ms in first tri and also have a bad vomit phobia. I was scared of vomiting during labor and had to talk myself off a ledge thinking I would. 20 hour unmed labor no nausea or vomiting. Had a c-section they say a lot of people do vomit but they give you meds to hopefully not. I didn't but the medication gave me the shakes and nightmares. Still better than puking. I did have diarrhea a lot when I was still laboring at home though.

I vomited the whole time until I was given anti-nausea meds, but I'm a puker in general.

Thanks for all your responses! I don't know why I'm panicking about puking when I have to squeeze a baby out of me!

Not a puker at all, but did throw up right before I started pushing with my first. Hope he doesn't happen this time, but it's no big deal if it does!

I keep thinking I'm going to throw up because when I'm on my period and cramping, I get really really nauseous and almost puke. And I know that labor is worse than cramps lol. But yeah my anxiety about birth stems from wondering if I'm going to throw up or not lol and like you said, idk why I'm worried about puking when I'm gonna push a baby out of my vagina

@babybluu the pushing is the "easy" part. Once you start pushing it feels like your actually getting somewhere and eases the contractions. The dialting to 10 is the rough bit. At least for me. I was surprised to find pushing was a bit of a relief. Even though he never made it out

I threw up my entire pregnancy last time and threw up during labor as well. They have me meds to stop the nausea, didn't work. Only thing that worked was peppermint oil on a cotton ball pinned to my hospital gown. Good luck!!

I'm going to dilute some peppermint oil in a little spray bottle I got at an herbal shop and put that in hospital bag. I saw this awesome Birth video where the mom was huffing a a wash cloth with peppermint oil for nausea. That exactly what I'm gonna do!

I also suffer from emetophobia (phobia of vomit). Had my baby a week and a half ago and didn't vomit yay! I pushed for one hour and there was a point where I felt nauseous but I just had to breathe (yes, through pushing). Basically whatever it is that keeps us emetophobes from throwing up all those other times will probably also keep you from doing it during labor so you'll be fine.

Side note, I thought baby spit up wouldn't bother me but LO projectile vomited two days ago and I got so scared I almost dropped her. I felt terrible! I'd be more worried about that

I was induced on my due date and after 12 hours they said they were going to probably send me home because I hadn't dilated. I instantly got sick to my stomach because I was so discouraged and didn't eat the meal they sent at dinner time. An hour later they broke my water instead. Well, I started to eat my jello and shaved ice and when the contractions got really bad shortly after I got sick. I only threw up twice though. Once I didn't have anything in my stomach I was fine.

Every time I had a contraction I would vomit. They gave me phenergan through IV. Wish I would have never gotten it because it messed me up so bad. Felt like I was on drugs. Good thing it didn't last too long.

I also threw up a lot in my first trimester. I hope everything goes well for you. Try not to worry too much.
