Hey ladies! With christmas/Hanukkah come and gone I thought it might be fun to share with each other 1) What is the worst present you have ever gotten 2) What is the best present you have ever gotten?
My worst: When I was around 12 or 13 years old I was always in a constant state of bickering and fighting with my Mom. For my birthday that year I asked my parents to go away and leave me alone on the day. They did and I remember feeling so lonely and sad. Talk about be careful what you wish for!
My best: I have to say is my engagement ring from my DH. He proposed on our 4th anniversary, right after I first woke up and hadn't even had my coffee yet (which he says was part of the mastermind plan.) He had the ring made and he designed it himself. It is one of a kind and so perfectly me. There are lots of rings out there that are truly beautiful and extravagant and such, but my ring is so perfectly me, that i couldn't have asked for anything better if I had designed it myself.
1) Best present that sticks out in my mind (if we're talking any kind of present) is the recent birthday present I got - we got a new puppy last month after losing my/our last dog a year ago. My husband and I had different ideas on when we should get a new puppy, but he wanted to get me something for my 40th that would be awesome and this was truly awesome! It's also the first animal we got together.
2) Worst was a Valentine present from a guy I was dating in my late 20's, maybe even early 30's...it was one of those cheesy crystal prism things that had a carving of a rose inside the crystal block. AND he really splurged by getting the light up stand for it that changed colors. He also got me a stuffed heart that had arms and legs - luckily I had dogs and told him I had to keep it in the closet or the dogs would chew it up.
(edited to clarify how old I was when I received cheesy gift)
1. Best: (tie) for my 30th, we were living in the UK, and I was missing that I wouldn't get to celebrate with my friends and family. I have a summer birthday, so we celebrated by visiting Norway and my husband rented us kayaks for the day on the fjords. Later that night I got my present - he had coordinated with my closest friends and family to have each of them record and send a video clip wishing me a happy birthday, which he compiled into one file.
Second was a gift this year, where DH took the kids to a ceramic painting place and they painted me a new popcorn bowl. I would love it no matter what, but this turned out beautiful.
2. Worst: in the half hour or so before our wedding (we had already done pictures, and we're just hanging out while guests arrived), my crazy great aunt tracked us down and forced us to open her gift. I'm pretty sure she has a huge mischievous streak and never know how seriously to take her innocent act. Anyways, her gift ended up being this hideous fan (with a "gold" painted plastic stand to rest it on). The support of it (on the back) is plastic canvas and (I kid you not) clear plastic forks, and from the front it's lace and gold lamé with a bride and groom cake topper in the middle. I open this and am trying to be polite when she points out that we can plug it in! It has a string of Christmas lights also winding through it!
Best: This year's Christmas gift was pretty awesome from my husband. He got me a KitchenAid mixer in watermelon. It's so beautiful. I love baking and have wanted one ever since I've been in my 20s. He was so smug this year as he knew he nailed the gift this year. I'm sure I've had other great presents, but it's my favorite recent gift.
Worst: Funny that I can remember the worst right off the top of my head. When I was 13, my aunt gave me this HIDEOUS sweater. One sleeve was like black and white stripes, the other sleeve was like a plum color with a paisley print, and the chest/back of the sweater had big chunky stripes of colors that were gross together (olive, magenta, mustard, etc.). I never wore that sweater. I don't know what she was thinking or the person who designed that sweater was thinking.
@Piperella - I also got a KitchenAid mixer from my husband for Christmas! Mine is a slate color. Honestly I am not a huge baker, but I have the handheld KitchenAid mixer and it's not very powerful (my cheapo brand one was better). So, I will be using it to make DH's birthday cake next week. DH was so proud of all of the research he did in buying it. There's no way I could return it!
@jennh75b Awww! That's so sweet! It really is the thought that counts. The day after Christmas I had to make 5 poundcakes for a Caritas project I volunteer with. It made making the cakes a breeze (just halve the mix times). Hope you love yours just as much! I've already got my eye on a cover for the mixer and a glass or ceramic bowl.
Yes, we already looked at covers and other accessories, too! I'm glad you already got to use yours and glad it made things easier. Now I'm looking forward to using mine.
