Using yoga ball

I was wondering if anyone had any success stories with prelabor and laboring using the yoga ball?

I have lost my mucus plug and was wondering if anyone has used the ball to help move things along? I am full term and just playing the waiting game now. I don't want to be induced. I guess it's worth a shot right?!?

Also how far along, dialated, effaced were you when it did/didn't work.

Edit: added more

Re: Using yoga ball

  • Sitting on a yoga ball only helps with getting the baby in a good/better position. I lived on a yoga ball wth my first pregnancy and still ended up 4 days past my DD. I was 3-4 cm dilated a majority of my last month so it didn't really help me dilate any more than I already was. If anything you'll probably just find some relief from any achy hips/back, and you'll encourage baby to get in a good position.

  • I agree with PP, but I've heard using the ball to bounce on regularly can help gently press baby's head against the cervix which can encourage it to dilate. How effective this is I don't know though. My baby is so low already that bouncing too much on mine gives me terrible 'lightning crotch' and I can barely walk afterwards! I'm 38+3.
  • I was at my labor class and the teacher stopped and seemed really alarmed and told me that I was bouncing WAY too hard and that once in a class when someone did that they went into labor. I was only 29 weeks so that was probably an exaggeration but she seems to think they are related.

  • When I was pregnant with my first, I would always sit on my yoga ball while I blowdried my hair in the mornings. When I was in my third trimester, I would lightly bounce on it and rock my hips back-and-forth and in circular motions.

I didn't do it on purpose to go into labor. I did it because I knew it would help baby get into position. However, my water ended up breaking at 36 weeks. I had a healthy baby thankfully, but I always wonder if that yoga ball contributed to going to labor too soon.
  • I sit and bounce on it now that I'm due.
  • I used the ball while I was in early labor. I'm not sure if it helped move things along but it helped with contractions a bit.
  • I used a ball before and during labor. It helped relieve some of my hip and back pain. I did hip circles and bounced in it throughout my labor.
  • I have heard so many good things about it helping with labor, lowering, and hip/pelvic easing I figured it can't hurt regardless if it let's me meet my LO sooner :)
  • I'm a yoga instructor (however, I don't teach with balls). I was induced due to spiked blood pressure at 39+4. I tried labouring on the ball (because in prenatal she said it helped with pain). It didn't. It didn't help at all. I was probably close to 6 cm, because right after I took a shower, told DH how bad it was, then the nurse checked me. I think.
  • I have one and I use it daily just to keep myself flexible and comfortable (37+5 now). I also plan on having it during labor to see if it will help. FWIW baby is head down and has been that way for 20 weeks, never any issues with him being breech.
  • I ordered one on Amazon today after reading this thread!
  • Don't put them away after labor, they are good for bouncing baby to sleep, too :)
