tested for CMV (Cytomegalovirus)

Hey Guys,

Just wondering if anyone else has been tested for CMV as part of the first doctor appoitment? They didn't test me with my son 2 years go so I hear it's new to do this testing now.

My question is did anyone's IgM come back high during any of their pregancies? I know that 50 percent of all women will have this virus by age 40 and it's for life, the problem is it can be dangerous during pregnancy if it's in reactivation stage or new within the last 4 months.

Thanks.

  • I got tested for it but haven't gotten results back yet. Did your levels come back high?

I am tested every pregnancy at least once bc by the time my patients show positive I have probably already worked with them. I obviously don't have the immunity since I keep on having to be tested.

Anyways, if you are testing positive more than likely it is not an active infection, but your immunity that you have test positive for. This is a good thing bc if you get exposed to it during pregnancy your baby is less likely to contract it bc your immune system knows what to do. It is very common to be tested for this.

  • Thanks guys for the responses. I just got my results. Avidity for IgG is high, 80. Anything over 60 is good. This means no infections in past 4 months.

My original results came back high for IgM which wasn't good. So they did avidity to confirm if there was a recent infection.

This was huge relief. My son's birthday is on Christmas day. So now I can celebrate in peace. :)

  • I was lucky enough to get a bad a mono from CMV sophomore year of college. It took doctors 9 months to finally diagnose it. So I was pretty certain I was immune for pregnancy but luckily enough I was able to get into a research study following first time moms and screening for CMV. Mine showed I already had the antibodies for that first pregnancy so I was indeed all in the clear. Sometimes you just don't know with herpes viruses. I'm glad to hear standard screening for CMV is becoming more available for obstetrics.

Just because you had CMV before does not make you immune to it.  You can catch a different strain or a reactivation while pregnant.   It is always wise to practice the safety precautions.

  • I had it in my early 20s and it caused my liver to completely shut down. At first they thought I had Hep A. I had blood drawn every month for almost a year to make sure my enzymes went back and stayed normal. I asked about this during my first pregnancy and she wasn't worried about it being an issue since it had been 6 years prior. I haven't had my nurse appt yet, but it's sounding like they require a blood test now? Like PP said, if you've had it before wouldn't it always show up? So why test for it? I guess I need to ask that at my appt next week.
