Double stroller or Sit-and-Stand?

I'd like some input from moms of 2+ kids with a roughly 3 year age gap and also moms of 3 year old (or older) kids in general.

DS will be just shy of 3 years old when this baby comes.  He currently uses his stroller about 50% of the time when we're out.  He likes to walk around and has pretty good stamina, but he likes to sit and have his snack or just rest when he gets tired.  By June he probably will not want to sit as much.  Or he might want to be pushed in a stroller because of sibling jealousy.  Who knows.  Also, the two playgrounds closest to our house are both a 20 minute walk away at an adult pace and I don't foresee him making that entire walk there and especially back anytime soon, so I'll still want to have a stroller for that.

I've been thinking of getting a sit-and-stand style stroller instead of a full double stroller.  That way it will hold a baby bucket seat and have a spot for DS to sit when he wants to without being as big and bulky as a full double.  The main downside I see is that it might not be comfy enough for DS to sit in for long periods of time and he couldn't nap in it (and again, I'm not sure if he would need that by that age).

What has your experience been with double strollers and with strollers for 3 year olds in general?  Should I reconsider a full double for any reason (and in that case, a side by side or tandem)?  If you have a sit-and-stand, what brand do you have and how do you like it?

Re: Double stroller or Sit-and-Stand?

  • Sit and stand all the way for us!! We first got the Baby Trend Sit and Stand when our kids were 6 months and 26 months. It was super affordable, durable and lightweight. The storage area was too small for a diaper bag so I got a "mommy hook" to hang off the back. The problem with this stroller is you can't put an infant car seat on it.

So we just got a Graco Ready 2 Grow!! It's amazing and there are so many options. We currently have a 3yr, 2yr and the baby in June can be in the infant car seat on the front and one of the kids on the bench. My kids are super busy and love to explore/walk so I love they can get off and on as they please when we are out. They kind of rotate being in the front seat or on the bench at this point. They will have to rotate on the bench/ walking once baby is here. The only downside with the Ready 2 Grow is it's pretty long and takes the entire width of our trunk (Honda accord) to the point you have to give it a shove in. Hope that helps

  • Good question I'm in the exact same boat!
  • I love my sit and stand! You may want to consider a joovy caboose. They sell a "seat" attachment if you find that you really would prefer a double stroller. My girls are 2 years apart and I've only use a sit and stand. I like that it's smaller and lighter then double strollers. My 4 year old loves to stand on the back and be able to jump off and walk easily.
  • I talk about this stroller all the time, but with the uppa baby vista, you could have two seats and a standing platform so he could have the option. Might be worth taking him to the store and trying a few with him to see how he fits.
  • I'm trying to decide the same thing. DS will turn two just before LO is born. He enjoys sitting in his stroller but I'm not sure if that will change in 6 months. I definitely like the price tag of a sit and stand a lot more than the doubles I'm looking at!

  • We have a sit n stand. There is 18 months between my first two and they both still use it. You can see which car seats fit the different versions. Ours allows a car seat to rear face in both the front seat and on the back above the jump seat
  • I had the same age gap between my first two an the st and stand was all we needed. When dd was little I usually used a carrier anyway if ds needed a stroller, and for short walks ds just walked. I'm glad I didn't waste space or money on a big double stroller, it wouldn't have been worth it for us. We have the Joovey light weight one.

Ooo what brand is yours? That might be the best of both worlds.

  • Mine will be exactly 3 years apart and I was just thinking about what to do DS rarely uses the stroller but still needs it sometimes. For now I'm gonna wait till April or May to decide since a lot can change between now and then.

I bought the baby trend sit to stand due to price and the reviews. It also was shorter than the grace so more chance that I will get it in my trunk.
It has an option for infant seats in front and back as well as two seats forward facing and the option for one sitting and one standing. I bought one with as many options as possible so that i don't have fights later when one doesn't want to sit one way etc.

Editing that I got it for $130 in target on sale and I saw last week babies r us had the same price in store. I went with target because I had a voucher I needed to use
