Hostile Cervical Mucus

Hey ladies,  I just wanted to see if anybody else had any experience with this??  We did the post coital cervical mucus test last week and the RE said that swimmers were "non moving".  We have decided to do the test again next month because he was pretty sure based on my internal U/S that I had ovulated already and that may have caused the swimmers to be non moving.  If we do the test again next month though and its the same results, he is going to say that IUI is our next step.  I've been pregnant before but it was years ago.  I'm just wondering if anybody has had experience with getting pregnant on their own even with hostile CM or how long you've tried on your own before moving on to IUI.  The nurse at the RE's office said that CM can change from cycle to cycle so there's really no telling what could be "causing" the hostile CM.  I would love to hear your experiences just for my own knowledge.  I know that your experiences have no bearing on my personal experience.  Just want to hear other's stories.

Re: Hostile Cervical Mucus

  • I had a bad PC test (showing few swimmers and the ones they saw were dead).  They recommended moving straight to IUI after that test.  They didn't try to determine the "cause" or the reason for the CM.  IUI is the easy (and quickest) way around it.

  • I would agree to jumping straight to IUI if there are any doubts. We did the PCT and results came back fine (even though I could never see any CM), but we wanted to put all chances on our side. You could try evening primrose oil to help, but in our case it didn't change much and for the cost of IUI, we preferred just making the jump.
  • If you get another bad or even okay PCT, I would also recommend jumping to IUI as it really will give you your best chances. I'm sure your doctor can give you percentages of success to help you see the difference. Producing more eggs with ovulation induction won't help if the swimmers can't get to the egg, and that may be the reason you haven't gotten pregnant this time around. Your body chemistry may have changed after your last pregnancy or your last pregnancy could have been a true miracle, so I wouldn't discredit your doctor's recommendation based on your prior pregnancy. You're likely spending money being monitored and spending money on medicine, so, honestly, you'd just be wasting it doing TI with hostile CM or a PCT with poor results.

  • I just can't help be more certain that doing another test will produce the same results because I looked back on my charts from last few months & we've had good timing most months, getting at least 2 days in during the FW.  we had great timing this past month.  So I'm leaning towards that is where we are headed with IUI.  just really makes the phrase "timing is never going to be right" pop into my head & makes me think how silly we've been to wait this long for the timing to be right......we will see what tomorrow brings I suppose.  Thanks ladies!
  • I think it's completely natural how you're feeling. If it makes you feel better, you should be able to do the repeat PCT test and an IUI in the same cycle. I do personally think I would have a hard time doing TI not knowing why my other PCT test was bad, but, as always, you need to do what you and DH are comfortable with financially and emotionally.
