ASMR for stress, anxiety, and relaxation.

Okay okay. First of all, if you don't know what ASMR is, let me warn you. Its a little, unconventional. You may find it weird, stupid, or both, and that's totally okay. If you're a bit more open minded, stick with me a second.

Asmr has a wiki page and I could link it except I'm on my phone and can't do anything useful on my phone ever, and it stands for something sensory something response.

Long story short, though, its...the "tingle" up the back of your head and spine when say, someone plays with your hair or touches your ear.

I've seen a lot of people here have issues with anxiety, restlessness, sleeplessness, etc, and I think for some of you, this might be worth looking into.

YouTube has built up a huge Asmr community that makes videos that specifically are meant to relax you and to trigger the "tingly" response, which is very pleasurable. It is not sexual.

Asmr trigger videos are videos of people taking softly or whispering, many who use a binural microphone, and the videos include tapping, rustling of paper, crinkling, playing with water, etc. Some include "role play" videos which may send you to the spa or to get a haircut, meant specifically to trigger the viewer with these pleasurable tingles.

Some people do not find them interesting or relaxing and that's OK. Many people have never even felt the tingles up the back of your head. The tapping and mic sounds are weird and even annoying to some, but I love it. I find it very relaxing as well, even if I don't get tingles.

It helps me sleep at night, right away and a nice deep sleep. The quiet talking is very soothing.

Anyway I wanted to share it because I thought some of you may be open minded enough to give it a shot or at least do some more research. Like I said there is a wiki page, but on Youtube my favorites are ASMR requests and Gentle Whispering.

Its really helped a lot recently with some nervousness and helped me sleep sounder.I'll try to add links later.

Re: ASMR for stress, anxiety, and relaxation.

  • I've heard of this before and am definitely curious....
  • I found it very randomly. I searched for pregnancy announcements on YT and found this one girl. I saw she had another channel that was all her whispering in another language and then English speaking versions and I was instantly like wtf is this crazy shit. Lol. I don't watch her particularly but I've done some research and its definitely a thing. I watched this one girl make soap the other day for like 45 minutes and slept like a baby. Its so weird. But awesome.

  • My husband has this! His go to is Bob Ross :) If he's had a particularly stressful day and can't sleep we sometimes watch & listen to him paint "a happy little tree" :)
  • I love guided imagery or "hypnosis" relaxations they are so lovely as they talk you through falling asleep i use a fan a sound machine and the hum of our air filter! Oh and an eye mask and that doesn't even touch all my pillows ;) I'm needy when it comes to sleep

  • Bob Ross is sort of who everyone talks about when discussing asmr. The soft, positive voice, the scraping of the brushes and tools against the canvas.

My triggers are hair and face. So I could watch a video of someone brushing someones hair for 20 minutes and fall straight asleep. Its certainly unconventional, but whatever works!
  • Tried this last night!  It's weird, I found it so soothing and relaxing (especially the spa ones) listening to it, but when I tried to listen and watch the video it creeped me out.  Fell fast asleep during the scalp/ear massage one!

  • I'm telling you. For people who may have anxiety but can't take the medication they are used to- this may be an option worth trying. Even if it doesn't work, it has to be worth looking into.
  • I'm totally trying this tonight - I started listening to the scalp massage one and got really tired at work. Thank you for sharing @jlgriff11 :)

  • Haha! I'm so glad these work for you ladies, but I just can't get past the smacky mouth sounds that the microphone picks up.
  • Lurking from August. I got so excited when I saw this thread! My husband thinks it's creepy, but ASMR helps me sleep when nothing else will. Check out Gentle Whispering and WhispersRed.

I don't really know what I'd do without ASMR. It's not for everyone, especially if you don't actually have or get ASMR, but it's really the only thing that helps me sleep these days. I'm so sore and achy, even turning over in bed is beginning to be an ordeal- so I just toss up a ASMR video and I am out in like, ten minutes flat. I rarely even make it through an entire video.

I love Whispers Red- and a Gentle Whispering hair wash was the first video to ever give me the tingles. :)

Plus it's like we have an influx of very anxious people on this thread who could certainly use some calming down.
  • @jlgriff11 I will have to either figure out how to link thinks from my phone, or at least grab the names for you. I have been obsessed with ASMR (so I can sleep) for long before I got pregnant lol So I have a huge list of them saved. All hair/head/face related as well. There are 3 or 4 channels that I love, and the rest are all just random videos  I love that other people know what the heck this is. I think DH thinks I am crazy for watching them lol
