Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

How long does this last? Moving here from Aug '16

I was just a little over 7 weeks pregnant with our first with a plan to tell friends and family at Christmas. On Thursday i found out my best friend was pregnant and we were due within weeks of eachother!
On friday at work I started spotting. I called the midwife line after having my first appt earlier that week and the midwife on call told me to wait and get a beta checked - it was 2800. A bit low for 7 weeks, but nothing to compare it to. The spotting turned into bleeding and the midwife wouldnt let me get an ultrasound- she insisted I wait it out for the weekend. The bleeding got heavier and I started cramping a lot and ended up in the ER. beta was 2200, no heart beat on ultrasound, fetus measuring 6 weeks, 6 days and the sac was measuring 5 weeks, 4 days. They said my dates could be off or I'm actively starting a miscarriage. The fact that the beta dropped in just a few hours tells me it's the latter.
So I've spent the weekend bleeding and cramping but it's definitely less than on friday and haven't passed the sac yet. How long is this going to last? I almost just want a D&C so I can get this over with. We are so devastated. I am not looking forward to Christmas anymore

  • I am right there with you. I went to the ER from work on Thursday because I was clotting. They did the blood work and ultra sound and I got to see my baby for the first time. Unfortunately, there was no heartbeat and the dates were off from what I was supposed to be. I went to the doctors the next day and told him how badly it would kill me to have a miscarriage.  He explained to me, if it happens there is just something wrong with the baby, something and it could not be helped. Basically that if the baby doesn't take it is for the best because if it were born it probably wouldn't live much longer after birth. I cried a little, got emotional. I rescheduled my first OB visit and what was supposed to be my first ultrasound for the Monday after Christmas. I went home and started clotting more and worse then the day before. I was cramping a lot and called the doctor. I was told to go back to the doctor's office. On my way, the doctor called me and said it sounded like I was passing tissue. She basically told me to go to the ER. So there I was back in the ER alone crying hysterically waiting for my husband to get there from work. After more blood work and another ultra sound the sac was still there but still no heartbeat. Basically the baby stopped developing. The doctor said I could still have hope but I knew, my baby wasn't there anymore...I passed the sac Saturday (yesterday) which was the worst part but it also offered me and my husband some closure knowing that we no longer had to have false hopes. I am still bleeding and passing some tissue and cramping here and there but it's finally starting to let up. I'm going back to the doctor's tomorrow because they wanted me to get more blood work to see my pregnancy hormone levels but now that I have passed the sac I just want to move on and get passed this so we can start trying again. Hang in there, this is my first miscarriage and I would never wish this upon my worst enemy but knowing I am not alone and that this is common makes it somewhat easier to cope with. BTW...we were going to tell our families at Christmas too..bought little onesies for everyone to open but now we don't feel much like celebrating either...

  • I opted for a d&c after my first loss, but the bleeding with my second lasted about 5-6 days. I'm so so so sorry for you and your husband. Take time for yourself and don't feel like you have to act happy for others just because it's Christmas.

  • Hate to see a fellow August 16er  :'(. I plan on having an extremely low key Christmas with my husband because I don't feel like dealing with everyone.

  • I am so very sorry about your loss. I know how much it hurts. I don't have any experience on natural miscarriages. I had to have two d&c with both mc. I had two missed mc and it didn't look like I was going to be doing it naturally any time soon. It seems like yours is moving along well. I wanted to send you well wishes and to tell you that we are here for you. Take care of yourself!

  • I had a natural miscarriage. It  started really fast, a had light cramping for about an hour, it progressed to heavy cramping for about an hour with quite a lot of bright red blood and then probably about another hour after that I passed the sac/baby. I continued to bleed moderately for a week and then was done.

  • I'm only lightly spotting today. Beta is already down to 258. The nurse thinks i might have passed it without knowing it.
