OB history exam and ultrasound

My doctor just left her practice and since I had a miscarriage so early last time, I wasn't estayat an OB office yet. I just followed up with my primary care doctor before she left. I found out last Saturday that I might be pregnant again and after a test Monday I sure enough was. Getting labs ordered was a hassle since my dr wasn't at the practice anymore and I didn't have a OB yet but I finally got them back and my HCG was only 13 and the office wouldn't order another test for me since I'm seeing the OB Tuesday. Granted I am only 4 weeks or so. I had some spotting yesterday and I'm hoping the OB office will order another test Tuesday to check my progesterone as well as HCG. It's just an OB history appointment so I'm not sure about what all is going to be done but is there a chance of getting a quick ultrasound too?

Re: OB history exam and ultrasound

  • It's unlikely they'd do an u/s prior to 6 weeks because there's not much to see. Even then, each doctor had their own procedures, so the only way to know for sure would be to call the office and ask.

I highly doubt it. There's no medical reason for you to get an u/s at this point. Yes, it would give you peace of mind, but it would be a waste of resources, sadly. Every pregnant woman wants peace of mind and a weekly u/s. That's not standard and no reason to do so.
  • My first beta was only 10!
At only 4 weeks an ultrasound wouldn't show much if anything.
  • I'll be about 5 weeks then and didn't know if we would be able to see a pole or yolk sac or not.

I was hoping for my HCG to be a bit higher. I've seen and heard of it being low and the pregnancy still being successful. I'm just nervous because my HCG was at 31 before I miscarried 2 days later.

If my progesterone is low does anyone think there is still time to save the baby with supplements?
  • I had an early ultrasound with my dd and it actually scared me more than anything. My dates were slightly off so when they didn't see anything but a yolk sac they were worried I had miscarried. I ended up with more bloodwork and had to go back for another ultrasound a week later. It was the longest week of my life. Luckily we were just off by a few days but I wouldn't wish that on anyone. It definitely didn't give me the peace of mind I thought it would.
  • Your OB will probably order more another hcg draw and other labs.  They definitely can give you progesterone if it is low.  If you experience more bleeding this weekend I would maybe call.  Maybe you need progesterone sooner rather than later.  Good luck. I hope everything is ok.
  • I have had two miscarriages and I agree that an early u/s usually causes more anxiety than it solves.
    My TTC History:
    2009: missed miscarriage #1 at 9 weeks (trisomy 16)
    2010: Infertility
2011: Diagnosis and treatment (low sperm count, anastrozole for DH, clomid for me + IUI)
    2012: Baby #1
    2014: Baby #2
October 2015: missed miscarriage #2 at 11 weeks (trisomy 22)
    March 2016 BFP#5, due November 2016.

  • I didn't think of it that way, thank you!

Thank you! So far no bleeding today, just normal aches and pains. Just holding on for Tuesday. It's so close but so far away.

How far along were you when you had your beta done? I'm hoping the blood test was just done too early. I'm also so frustrated that two blood work orders weren't put in so that we could see if and when they were going up.

    I was 9dpo
  • My first beta was at 11 DPO and was 22.  3 days later is was 136 at 14 DPO (I was 4 weeks along).  They did another draw after that but told them I didn't want the number because it was just giving me anxiety.
  • I unfortunately lost the pregnancy on Sunday.  My OB office was able to get me in for an appointment yesterday and I met with a doctor who put my mind at ease.  He said we could wait for a 3rd miscarriage or he could start the treatment typically started after a 3rd miscarriage anyway.  He said it's great that I was able to get pregnant so quickly, now it's just a matter of supporting the early pregnancy as best we can.  He also thought that I only knew about the last pregnancy because we were trying, otherwise I would have just thought my period was late due to the last miscarriage.  As soon as I find out I am pregnant again he's starting me on progesterone, baby aspirin, and a higher does of folic acid.  Hopefully this helps!

My doctors put me on progesterone as soon as I found out I was pregnant this time around after losing my last one at 5 weeks. I'm now 7 weeks and going strong and I hope the exact same happens for you! I'm sorry you're going through this. Best of luck and may your TTC journey from here on out be much less stressful. <3

The same happened to me Monday. Except I was over 2 weeks off because I have mild PCOS so my cycles are crazy. They could only see the gestational sac and yolk sac and I freaked out thinking the baby wasn't going to develop. Once I got home and calmed down, I did some calcukations and all the dates work out if I just ovulated 2 weeks later (3 days after I expected my period actually!) the next day the doctor called and said my bloodwork confirmed I was just fine. I go back next Wednesday to confirm, and although I'm trying to take comfort in what I know, I am SO nervous as we've been trying to get pregnant for 2 years now. I'll be 7 weeks then so hopefully we'll hear the heartbeat and that will settle my nerves a lot!

  • No it doesn't seem that way yet! My levels went from 13 to 44 from Thursday to Monday so that was comforting. Especially for how much I felt like I bled on Sunday. I go back in for another blood draw to see where my HCG is on Saturday so that my doctor can see where to go from there on Monday! I'm excited but terrified at the same time.
