Gassy Babies

Our LO is 19 days old. The problem we are having is he gets incredibly gassy at night and then subsequently fussy which lasts for 4-5 hours. We've tried some OTC gas drops from Meijers with little success so far (only been using for a day though). Our pedi doesn't think they work but said they don't hurt either so we are giving it a try. Any STMs or moms with older little ones have recommendations of what worked for them??

Re: Gassy Babies

  • Spawn is 4 weeks old and we've started using gripe water recently after trying the gas drops. Gripe water really seems to work much better for the nighttime fussiness.

  • Good news! My baby is 5+ weeks old and has figured out that gas is normal; but around the time you're talking about he got fussy too every time he had gas or needed to poop. it was as though he knew something was inside of him and wanted it out NOW instead of waiting for his intestines to do the work. His pediatrician also mentioned (even though it made no sense to me) that spicy food could be making it worse so I basically have had zero spicy food for about 3 weeks. Now he still passes gas like an old man but it won't even wake him up.
  • Just got some Little Remedies simethicone gas drops and tried them for the first time and I think they're working? LO finally calmed after being fussy for a couple of hours.
  • Probiotics help. We also use gripe water and then gas drops if it seems to get worse. Lots of time on his tummy seems to help too.

They are expensive as sin but we use Gerber's Sooth drops- a probiotic otc as for us other things weren't working, we've definitely seen an improvement (the fussiness is NOT completely gone though, she's just easier to calm and bouts last a hell of a lot shorter). With the improvement we've see we're justifying the cost of those magical unicorn tears.
We use those too and they are SO worth the price.  They don't fix everything here either, but her fussy periods aren't nearly as intense or drawn-out, and LO is still gassy but she has an easier time passing it.  Our pediatrician gave us a coupon for them when I mentioned how fussy she was.
  • I'm on board with the Gerber Sooth Drops. My little one is 6 weeks now and EBF. I've noticed a huge difference since using them. I've also been able to go back to eating dairy which was aggravating her stomach before.
  • We use gripe water on Bridget.  They help so much.

I'm jealous of all of you whose babies love gripe water-- Ruth acted like I was trying to poison her and then vomited everything she had in her little stomach!
Mylicon drops do seem to help a little, though.

    Edit: grammar is a thing.
  • Gripe water has saved my sanity (Little Remedies brand). It doesn't work immediately, but it helps make the gas go through his system more easily and appears to make pooping easier too.

  • Gerber soothe drops are one of the only true probiotics out there.
The american pediatric association had a nice paper on their website regarding "alternative measures" for colic. The findings of randomized control trials favored any gripe water that had fennel seed extract in the ingredient list. Those products actually gave consistantly better results even when compared to the probiotics!

I played it safe and bought both!
  • Probiotics are what helped us. The pediatrician said they wouldn't really do anything for LO except to help improve my decision and therefore improve what he's getting from me.
  • You can also try bicycling your LO's legs to get their gas moving!

Haha, every time we try this, LO locks out his legs and makes it nearly impossible to bicycle them. Another question though: Does anyone know if you can put gripe water directly into a bottle of formula? LO just dribbles all of the liquid from the syringe right out of his mouth. He doesn't make a face like he is bothered by the taste, but there is so much in the dropper that very little actually seems to get swallowed.

We do knees to chest as well as bicycles. Put your thumbs behind LO's knees and push his knees up towards his chest and lift thier bum. If they lock you can still lift thier legs and bum almost like a reverse crunch- works wonders for us as well.

Those of you using the soothe drops, do you give them once baby has been fussy for a little while? Or just daily as a preventative measure?
Might go get some tonight if LO has the gas and fussy uncomfortable-ness that made him scream and cry from 12-3:30 AM last night. :s
  • We do the recommended 5 drops daily as for us it took a couple days to kick in for her to develop the flora. I dare not try it as as needed.
  • We just started the probiotics, hopefully it helps. Baby chiropractic is supposed to be amazing too. That's next on out list of the probiotics don't work. Our pediatrician said to give gas drops before feeding if you use them. I can't wait for this gas to be over, it breaks my heart to see him hurt and we need sleep.

  • For the Sooth Drops we do the recommended 5 drops a day. I try to give them at the same time every day as well. They are definitely worth the price!
  • I use gripe water if it's bad but I take probiotic that get passed to the girl thru breastfeeding. I came across this gem ilast night and I'm dying for someone to try this and let me know if it works lol

I just gave my LO gripe water (mommy's bliss brand because I had a sample) this morning after a night of screaming. It worked almost instantly- heard bubbling in his belly, he burped about 5 times in 30 seconds, and stopped crying. He sat there awake but happy for 10 minutes and has been sleeping ever since (over an hour). Going out to buy more today!! LO is almost 6 weeks.

Colic calm...its pricey... but FDA approved, and its the only thing that helps my son..oh and a swi g...if you have a colicky baby who needs constant movement to feel settled itsa llifesaver, a glider swing that has white noise has really helped.
  • Give gas drops before the feeding and then gripe water after the feeding if baby is still uncomfortable

My little babe would grunt, strain, go bright red and push same time from about 3am to 8am.. It was so hard to watch as it looked painful but i have been told it is normal. Babies are still getting use to their bodies and the feeling of having a full bowel. I would give him a belly massage, bicycle motions with his legs and "infants friend" drops. I also burp after every feed because i have a greedy guts that swallows lots of air. He isn't so bad now :) Goodluck xo

I have these and will be trying them here soon when my husband wakes up. I feels like I've exhausted all efforts and now it's too the point where I'm crying every time he cries. He'll look right at me and stick his lip out and whimper like "why aren't you doing anything to help me?!" Ugh. It's killing me. I'll let you know how it goes!
  • We settled on a gripe water (mommys bliss) as needed and Gerber Soothe drops once a day at night. He seems to be doing better -- although he still gets gassy it doesn't seem to be as painful. We also added white noise at night and have been giving him a bath right before bed (which he loves and it seems to relax him nicely).

If your LO is that painful you might try talking to your pedi.
  • When using gripe water does anyone else's LO start drooling a lot after taking it? I just switched to gripe after hearing all the praise about it but my son starts drooling like crazy for about 5mins or so after taking it

I think it is just the excess gripe water dripping out. My son does that too.

Edit: excess not access... Damn sleep deprivation
  • Yep usually the gripe water dripping.
  • Have any of you used Gripe Water for hiccups? LO still gets them 2-3 times a day, sometimes lasting 15-20 min! I feel so bad for him as sometimes it wakes him from his sleep and then he gets cranky or it keeps us fel doing tummy time. Poor guy.

    Yeah it works pretty well.
  • We use GW (mommy's bliss) and LO chokes on it and drools. I give it to him in a medicine bottle that came in a safety first health kit. It's just such a large dose,I think it's normal. My LO SCREAMED when he had a BM so we switched to Enfamil Gentle ease. He's doing better. One or two screams a day due to gas. We used to have to use gas drops several times a day. He's down to one dose a day.

  • My LO is EBF and 6 weeks old. He has gas everyday and sometimes cries out. I had attributed it to certain foods that I eat but it doesn't seem to make a difference what I eat. The poor boy always has gas.

For those who have tried gas drops are you EBF and did you ask pedi first or just try something? TIA

I'm EBF and asked my pedi. She said mylicon for gas and gripe water for hiccups and colic.

I asked our pedi before starting gas drops at LO last check up because he was so gassy. I EBF and no matter what I eat he is always gassy. He's also 6weeks.
  • @helsbels222 and @hlaverett88 thanks. I'll check with my pedi.
  • I have tried all the probiotic brands and think they work about the same (BioGaia, Mommy's Bliss, Gerber Soothe) Mommy's Bliss is what I use because the dropper is easier to use. I give it everyday and have seen a tremendous difference. I also get baby adjusted at the chiropractor and it helps with her reflux. For bad gas or constipation try The Windi. It looks insane and is weird to think about putting a straw in your LOs butt, but I swear it is a lifesaver. Immediate relief, she actually likes it because she feels so much better!
