Dry heaving/gagging

Im 5w1d & besides the slight nausea ive realized my worst symptom thus far is the dry heaving. Is that considered morning sickness? I literally dry heave as im getting ready for work, getting my son in the car for school, its gotten so bad I spend a majority of my day retching over the trashcan at work. To tpp it off I have Emetophobia (the fear of vomiting) so this sends me into a permanent state of panic. My boss gave me a warning that if he had to send me home early one more time due to the dry heaving he would have to let me go. I dont know what to do ive tried squeezing my thumb in my left palm like someone suggested with no help. Part of me wonders if it would be better for the baby if I didnt work my first trimester bc im worried about the constant state of panic I live in due to this dry heaving and gagging all day

Re: Dry heaving/gagging

  • Habe you tried ginger candy or something to suck on? Also, I would call your OB and ask for suggestions. If it's hitting you all day and affecting your job, you probably need a prescription nausea med. I doubt anyone would advise you to give up on work, as most of us need our jobs.

  • I have this same problem this pregnancy .and had it every.single.day my last pregnancy(last oregnancy when i wasnt heaving/gagging i was actualky vomitting every time after i ate )....
And I worked until the day before I gave birth in a pretty labor intensive job on my feet all day.
Not to sound snarky but I just sucked it up.sipping water would make me vomit.sucking hard candies, peppermints, prego pops all puke worthy....
If you need to work you may just have to learn to deal with it and pray it goes away at 12 weeks like it does with some women or keep trying tips to calm it .iI have no useful tips because nothing worked for me this time or last time.i have learned to be able to stifle some of the heaving gagging. my hubby even knows if he sees me swallowing hard amd shiver it's because I'm trying not to gross other people out by heaving /gagging.
Is he sending you home or are you asking to leave ??
And if you don't "have "to work and is stressing you out that bad then maybe not working is best for you .but the heaving gagging is just the beginning of the many crappy ass side effects of pregnancy lol
  • I definitely think it's considered morning sickness. I've been having that too.
  • I also have emetophobia. I had gags and heaves with my first pregnancy and took Zofran all the time. I do not want to resort to Zofran again for this pregnancy.

Ginger chews have been helpful so far this time. I bite off a chunk and suck on it for a while.
  • My morning sickenss is always significantly better if I can eat.  Even if I just force a half piece of toast down.  Every 2 hours on the dot I need to consume something or risk my stomach being empty at which point my nausea returns.  Hope you figure something out!

    Pregnancy Ticker
  • If your boss is threatening your job, you need a note from your doctor. I believe that would be pregnancy discrimination.
  • I feel so bad. One of my clients came in my office saying she was on her period and was bleeding more than normal and I was gagging as she was talking from the smell of the blood.

  • I'm dry heaving and gagging too without vomiting. So I guess that can be considered morning sickness? But is it really legal for your boss to threaten your job like that? I feel like it's illegal to fire someone for being sick or pregnant. I agree with PP about getting a doctor's note.

Im so sorry you're dealing with that along with your boss saying that. :( the only thing that has worked for me so far is a combo of not letting myself get hungry along with ginger mints.
I finally figured out the ticker thing! (I was so excited I thought I'd tell you all) LOL

  • So far green ginger tea with a slice of lemon in it has helped a lot! I also got the preggie pop drops from babies R Us and they help a lot too
  • I got some phenergen today from my dr as well as sea bands and ginger gum. Hopefully something will help im at my wits end worrying about the baby AND my job.
  • I've been having bad dry heaving and gagging every morning also. My manager told me it was all in my head and it was mind over matter, I've tried really hard not to think about it but I can't help that I'm nauseas. I got sea bands today as well as the ginger gum, helped ease it a little bit but I'm still nauseas. Hope you all feel better!
  • I've been doing the same, although I actually threw up today. The sickness didn't hit me until about 8:30 this morning and usually its first thing right when I get up!
