Acid Reflux - ugh.

Anyone else finding themselves struggling with acid reflux? When I lay down at night, I feel what I assume is reflux in my throat and a weird taste in my mouth. Additionally, any time I cough (usually a dry, tickle type of cough), I feel like I have to stop myself from gagging. I think my toothbrushing gag is a part of this problem, too. I didn't struggle much with MS so far, so is this just what I get to deal with instead?!

I've had slight reflux problems in the past, but nothing to warrant medicine or anything. This is getting ridiculous, and I'm only 13 weeks! I hear that it's only going to get worse!

Any advice or similar stories? Not fun!

Re: Acid Reflux - ugh.

  • Sorry no great advice here but I'm shocked I'm having it this early as well. With my first pregnancy it didn't come till late in the 3rd trimester. Sleep propped up on lots of pillows and tums help! I agree this sucks.

  • Mine was really horrible about a month ago. I was 11 weeks-ish and I ate half a container of Tums. Is gone away since and hasn't come back. There is hope for you! Mine was AWFUL starting around 25 weeks with DS and never went away.

  • I have it too. Mine usually hits the worst around like 9pm when I am laying on the couch. My beat friend told me to get a recliner and sleep in it a few nights. She said in her 3rd trimester she slept in the recliner every night.
  • I I have this pre pregnancy and take prilosec otc daily. I would try tums or if it is severe you might ask your Dr about something stronger you can take. I know prilosec is safe but I'm not sure on zantac, prevacid, etc
  • I'm getting it already also. I hope it doesn't get too bad to the point where I can't lay down anymore (as it did third trimester with my first).
  • @Wepplo GIRL. yes!'I am 13 + 4 days & I had the worst reflux last week. I found it was if I ate any later then 630-7pm & I was eating tons of licorice! Which I also found out isn't good for you while preg.. So that stopped! I called my doctor & she said I could take Zantac if tums weren't working. So I did & havent had heartburn since. Maybe try Zantac ? Hopefully mine won't come back, but at least I know Zantac works. I hope it helps & you feel better!❤️
  • Eat all the Tums.  They are your best friend.

  • I really feel your pain! I'm not sure if mine is reflux or heartburn... Or if it's even different?! I had it week 6ish, it went away & now it's back:/
The problem is my heartburn FEELS a lot like hunger pangs, which is confusing because I AM hungry all the time. I can't win.

  • I used to keep tums in my car, purse, work bag, by my bed, kitchen etc. For me the actual drugs never worked but I sure kept the antacid companies in business. This pregnancy my heartburn started at 8 weeks, I would say it was 16 weeks or so my previous one.
  • I am also 13 weeks and have been dealing with this for a month already. I have found that tums and zantac help a little. Laying on left side with head elevated helps at night, I have even spent the worst nights sleeping in a recliner. During the day chewing gum keeps the acid at bay since your saliva is very basic. I have also tried warm almond mild with honey before bed (also very basic). Some combination of these things may help you. Also read up on some foods to avoid. Good luck!
  • Thanks so much everyone! The advice is great - someone had told me that Tums weren't recommended during pregnancy, but I'm thinking that was bad advice (Google seems to think they are fine!) I'll start there and see what happens. Plus, I eat way too late at night. I just wish my body wouldn't crave everything come 9pm!

Really, just hearing that I'm not alone in this disgusting gagging feeling makes me happy! Sorry for all your pain and suffering, but you get it, right?! ;)
