3rd Trimester

Kick counts

So I'm just starting kick counts and having a super hard time remembering to do it every day. It took me a while to remember the prenatals but now I'm religious about them. What are some tricks or how do you remember? She's super active in the mornings and pretty low key in the evenings. She gets to 10 movements in less then 10 minutes in the morning, but about an hour in the evenings.

Re: Kick counts

  • Why don't you just set an alarm on your phone if you intend on doing it?

I've never actually don't kick counts with any of my pregnancies. I've always just paid attention to baby's normal movement patterns and any time there was lack of movement, I'd drink some cold juice or something win caffeine and relax. Most times I'd feel baby move several times within the first 10-15 min. But if you insist on wanting to do them, I'd set an alarm like pp said. Or make post-it note reminders all over your house to remind you lol

  • I've been told over and over how important kick counts are. Is that not the case? I've tried setting alarms, but since I work retail and have a different schedule every day, sometimes it goes off at work and then I forget by the time I get home.
  • My doctor doesn't ask me to do kick counts, but wants me to make sure I feel regular movement daily. She says just to keep an eye out for changes/decreases in activity. Usually if I haven't felt baby move in a few hours (often when I'm working I just don't pay enough attention) I drink a big glass of milk or juice and take a few minutes to focus on it. If after that I still didn't feel the little guy or he had limited movements then I would definitely be calling my ob.
  • I'm not keeping kick counts. Like you, I know my babies schedule pretty well. If she isn't active when she should be then I'll know I have a problem!
  • Ya I pay attention to baby's regular movement. If baby isn't doing what's normal for a certain time of day I'll settle in for a kick count monitor session.

  • Third pregnancy, I've also never done kick counts. My babies have all been so active. I sit and watch TV for an hour or so every night and if I didn't feel movement during that time, I would be concerned, drink some cold water and get to L&D if still nothing.

  • I tried doing kick counts but I just don't have time during the day to stop and count. I just pay attention to what I consider normal for her. My doctor hasn't asked me to do them either
  • I also don't do kick counts, but my boy is an energetic little beast and rarely stops moving for more than half an hour. If I have ever grown concerned I eat or drink something sugary and lie on my left side. He always lets me know he's okay! As everyone else has said, as long as you're getting regular movements every day then you've no cause for concern. Remember that the further on you get their movements can lessen and slow slightly as they have less room. This doesn't happen with all babies though, doesn't seem to have happened with mine yet (I'm 36+5).
  • I was never told to do kick counts. I keep track of when she moves though based on when she is more active or not. Usually if she is not active when she should I eat or drink something with a little bit of sugar in it and then I feel her again almost instantly. I do monitor in case something does seem odd.

  • I was told to do kick counting.  I did it for a week, and at my next appointment no one ever asked me to see my chart (and I did have it with me).  So I'm going to fudge the chart because the baby is always kicking me, day and night.  10 kicks in an hour?  Try 10 in 20 minutes! As long as I know to keep track of movement, and he is always moving, I'm not going to worry.

  • Meh... My OB hasn't brought up kick counts at all this time, I can't remember if they did with my first either? It seems like it's a bigger thing on TB than it is to most OBs. I wouldn't bother with kick counting unless it occurred to me that baby was moving much less than usual.

My doctor has never mentioned them with my previous pregnancy or this one. Personally I don't think it's necessary as long as you pay attention to their moments or don't have a super active baby. This LO moves all the time. I can feel him pretty much anything I sit down for more than a minute or two. I do get worried sometimes if I am on my feet all day (I usually don't feel him because he is probably sleeping due to my movements) and I will sit down for a few moments just to check on him.

  • My doctor mentioned them at my last appointment, but she also said to only really do a kick count if I don't feel him moving like normally. She said that if I don't feel his normal movement, to eat or drink something and lie down. Then, if I don't feel anything or less than 10 kicks in 2 hours to go to L&D.

  • I only did kick counts when she wasn't moving as much as normal. She always had more active and more slow times of day, so if she seemed slow at a usually active time, I would drink something cold/sweet and do a count. If you're paying attention to movement usually, you'll notice if something is less than usual. As she got less room, the movement changed to more stretches and rolls rather than actual kicks.
  • Third pregnancy and I've never had a doc or mw mention them. They just ask if baby is active.

  • I started doing them, however I, like most of the PP, have stopped due to the fact that I know he's most active at night and I always feel several movements throughout the day. If I ever get nervous, I just push on his bottom, which is currently sitting under my ribs, and he starts wiggling around.
  • I was super religious about doing them with my first. This time around, I pay attention to his movements (he has a pretty regular routine) and if something seems off then I make sure I can get 10 in an hour. They always ask if Im getting my kicks in and i feel completely comfortable telling them yes.
