Please Help! Miscarriage vs Period Bleeding?

edited December 2015 in August 2016 Moms
Hello! I recently had multiple positive test results and had a very early miscarriage at 4 weeks, confirmed by a hgc level test. I started bleeding at day 30, 3 days after my missed period. Very intense lower abdominal pressure at the start. The 2nd, 3rd and 4th days felt exactly like my period. Normal bleeding for 4 days, just like my period. I would like to conceive the next time I ovulate. My question is, was this bleeding the miscarriage and my period at the same time? Or just the miscarriage? Thank you.

  • I'm sorry, it sounds like a late period. Mine vary often anywhere from 26-31 with and average of 27-29 days. Did you test for pregnancy? Then again you never know. In July, I learned I was pregnant a full week after what I thought was a normal period. I would confer with your doctor. At the time, my primary said some women continue with periods during early pregnancy. We ended losing it as an ectopic rupture shortly after 6 wks, complete with a fallopian removal. It was devastating. My DH and I are now eagerly expecting again. Best wishes to you!

  • The bleeding you experience was the miscarriage and your period as a result of low progesterone. Just like during a cycle when you don't conceive your body stops producing progesterone eventually and the lining of your uterus begins to shed. It is usually ok to conceive the next cycle, but the only person that can truly answer this question is your healthcare professional. I am sorry for your loss. Good luck in the future TTC.
  • I would say that unless you had a BFP that it would just be a late period. If you had done the test and it was positive, maybe a miscarriage. Sorry :(
  • I think doctors usually recommend waiting one cycle just to make things more accurate as far as dating conception. Some doctors recommend waiting a few cycles until your HGC is out of your body. Then again, you may have just ovulated later (without a positive pregnancy test, you just don't know. You are regular until you are not.)

But not being a doctor, I wouldn't really know. I'm sorry for your loss and good luck! There is a great TTGP board here with a wealth of information, and the ladies there are fabulous.

  • Thank you everyone. I did have multiple positive tests results. Just a little confused if this bleeding is my miscarriage and period together or just miscarriage alone. Totally feels like my period also. Thanks for the responses.

It's essentially the same. The bleeding you are experiencing is a miscarriage. The type of bleeding (uterine lining shedding) and cause of the bleeding (hormonal change) is exactly the same for both miscarriage and period. So, the first day of your miscarriage bleeding counts as cycle day one for a new menstrual cycle. If you get pregnant again right away, the first day of miscarriage bleeding counts as the "last menstrual period."
  • So sorry for your loss. You could get some ovulation test stripes if you want to be sure when you O.

  • Thank you so much Kristin! I definitely understand now. @Kristin712
