1st appoint u/s?

This is #2 for me. But I switched OBs mid way last time. I love my Dr. now. I just don't know whether or not I'll get a transvaginal ultrasound like I did last time. I've had a ton of cramping, and I didn't last time so I would prefer to get one to ease my mind.

What was your experience on your first trip?

Re: 1st appoint u/s?

  • The practice I go to does not do ultrasounds in the office. They have to send an order to the imaging center or hospital.
    Every dr/practice is different though.

  • every practice does things differently.
also, every pregnancy is different. what you experienced in pregnancy #1 could be a complete 180 of what you experience in this pregnancy. i would mention to your doctor/OB that you have bad cramping & see if there's anything they'll do to ease your mind a little.
  • OK I actually sent them a message on my patient portal. My husband says if I'm worried just message them. I just kind of feel silly. It's my second pregnancy, shouldn't I be less nervous this round?! Lol
  • I had three transvaginal ultrasounds with my daughter...and did fine. It is not uncommon to have discomfort, though I didn't have any. My previous practice also did a full pelvic exam. Many do a pap at this time.
  • I expect to get a pap. This was actually already set as a repap. I have to go in every 6 months as I had a cervix surgery awhile back and my last one came back abnormal but not enough to really worry my dr. So I'm kind of nervous about that as well!

I messaged them and said they do them at 8 weeks and I'll only be 6. So unless my dr changes his mind I'll be waiting awhile! :/

There's no medical reason for you to get one sooner than 8 weeks. Heck, some OBs only do one u/s the entire pregnancy (anatomy scan). I guarantee every single pregnant woman is nervous and wants reassurance. Try to find a new hobby or something to occupy yourself and pass the time until your 8 week visit. :)
  • I had a lot of cramping with my first pregnancy (which was a healthy 40w1d pregnancy that led to a perfectly healthy little girl). I remember calling the OB's office ALL the time with questions/concerns about the smallest things, and cramping was one of them, especially in my first trimester.

As for your question - My first real prenatal appointment is on 12/23 at 7w1d and I will be getting an ultrasound for dating purposes (they can't go off my LMP because I didn't have a period between my last m/c and this pregnancy). I think they normally do a dating ultrasound anyway at this first appointment, but they normally have it a little later - closer to 8 or 9 weeks.

  • Awww thank you. It makes me feel better to know I'm not crazy and other ppl have been through the same thing. I just need to relax and start reading again or something to distract myself once I start worrying!

Awww thank you. It makes me feel better to hear im not alone and crazy. It's hard not to worry. I just need to open up my book when I have down time and start worrying!!! Not to mention it all turned out great despite the cramping.

I'll just wait aw patiently at possible!
  • @1faceinacrowd I have been panicking because my first apt isn't until 8-10 weeks. Apparently that is the norm for a FTM with no known complications *blush*

They said they want to be able to have it far enough along they can do the tests - and from a more cynical stand point, prior to that if I do miscarry, there is nothing they really can, or should do.

Also, I have read that excessive ultrasounds, or going for those 3D ones are not good for baby, and the risk should be weighed against the medical need. Yes I would love to see the LO's little face, but I can wait if it means putting them in danger NOT to do so.

  • Oh I haven't even considered a 3D (honestly they freak me out) or extra ultrasounds although I'll probably have to do a couple. I'm a cerclage risk since I had a chunk of my cervix removed. And I also had preterm labor with my daughter. Thankfully they stopped it and I had her at 38 weeks.

See I'm not even a FTM so I can't use that excuse :0 my family has had tons of 'lady' issues (misscarriage, ectopic, cysts, etc) so I'm sure that contributes to my fears that are surely exaggerated. I do trust my dr thankfully! So I'll do as he says and know it's for the best.

I've never heard that about ultrasounds! I guess that would explain why you normally do only get 1-2 in a healthy pregnancy. If I remember correctly from my first one, I had one around 10 weeks and one around 18 weeks.. I'm pretty sure that was it. They offered to do a 3D one but I've seen them and honestly, they freak me out a little. LOL. And at that point, all babies kinda look the same imho.
