First appt question

My husband and I are having our first OB appointment next week. We are really excited about having a baby. This is both of ours first, and neither know what we are doing. My doctor told me we should be able to hear the heartbeat at our appointment. My husband wants to come. Is that okay? What should we expect?

It is absolutely okay for him to join you. It sounds like you'll be getting an ultrasound so I would absolutely encourage your husband to go. Every doctor's office is different. For example, my OB (and many others) don't do an u/s at the first appointment. The best thing you can do is call the office and ask the scheduler what to expect. They will know and be able to quickly inform you.

In general, you should expect to get a lot of blood taken and possibly have a pap smear/physical exam as well.

  • Our first appointment for this pregnancy is next Wednesday. My husband went to all but maybe two of my appointment during my last pregnancy. They aren't all fun but he enjoyed being able to listen to the heart beat. The first appointment for us was an u/s, pap, blood work, and they gave us a bunch of information on pregnancy, being new parents, what to expect, etc. I had to get another u/s 2 weeks after my first appointment because I was still really early. That's probably going to happen this time around too. They wanted me to come in next week since we are leaving town, same scenario as last time actually! I'll be somewhere between 5w and 5w3d at my appointment.

  • The first appointment is great! I definitely encourage you to bring your spouse. Find out if they do an ultrasound. Hearing the heartbeat is beyond magical. A lot of practices tell you what to avoid while pregnant, how to eat, etc. It is a lot of info.

I would definitely have DH go! My first appointment is an u/s and an hour long appt with a nurse that is very informative for both me and my husband. Since LO is your first, I would encourage both of you to come up with a list of questions you have. I did that with DS and felt much more confidant in between appts. Good luck! That first appt is always exciting :)

  • DH came along for several of my appointments last time.  The first one is definitely a good one for him to attend. You'll get a lot of information, pretty fast. It'll be helpful to have a couple of you hearing it!

    Good luck! :)

  • Thank y'all! This has been very helpful!
  • I had an initial checkup appointment 2 weeks ago at the 5 week mark. We weren't able to see very much but it was so exciting confirming the pregnancy visually with my husband. My follow up is tomorrow where we get to see the heartbeat-I'm going to take him to that one too :) once the appointments become a little more routine he might take a break-he doesn't like doctors very much lol
