Shakes during labor

So this is one of those things that is overlooked during labor. It can be very scary for some women if they don't know what is going on. It happened for me when they a were stitching me up from my cesarean. But didn't happen during my second delivery. Because of that I always assumed it was because of all the medication I got during surgery. But apparently it's not. It can happen to any of us during our labor. So I just wanted to post this here so when we do have our little babes if it happens we know that it is completely normal and not to be scared about it.

Re: Shakes during labor

  • I too had the shakes during labor around the time I reached 10 cm, I also puked as soon as I reached 10cm - apparently that's pretty common too.

  • @WinniethePoohsPants I did a lot of puking with my first delivery too. It was no fun. Every time they wanted me to be on my back it was almost instant. I thought I was going to with my second but I went through transition to him being born so fast it never happened.

  • I sort of remember shaking during my labour but it was so long and I was so out of it for most of the second half I'm not even sure. I definitely puked though. I puked a LOT for several hours until I needed to be transferred to a hospital to get fluids and anti-nausea meds. Was not expecting that.

I think I remember shaking during my c section, but I was also vomiting without pause so I don't remember clearly. Definitely was shaking in recovery though. I remember dh asking if I wanted to hold dd and I said I couldnt. I was so scared I would drop her.
Man am I looking forward to another delivery :expressionless:

    Edit for spelling fail
  • I shook after delivery, never during labor. My MW said its just a shock response from the body. I had a vaginal delivery.

  • I shook just after they broke my water at 8cm. Then I started throwing up but there was nothing on my stomach so.. It was more dry heaving than anything. And I didn't have meds so definitely not related to that. I'm glad I had known beforehand I would shake at some point because there was no controlling it and it came out of nowhere.

  • I remember getting the shakes, too, which I attributed to my epidural.  Luckily, mine were not too bad, and no vomiting, either.  I hope my second labor will be as easy as my first! The only thing that was kinda tricky with my first was that she was "sunny side up," which meant pushing for a long time.

  • Thanks everyone. These tips are so helpful to prepare you. The vomiting I knew about but the shaking I always thought was from the epidural. Actually it makes sense that it is a shock response and normal in drug free labour too.
  • Omg, I could not stop shaking BEFORE my c/s. It was so bad, I begged the anesthesiologist for something "to calm my nerves." I had no clue that happened because I was knocked out for my first c/s. It was a little scary.

  • I had the shakes bad too! I remember thinking my teeth would shatter, and not having energy to do anything because I kept shaking. Mine were at the beginning of labor and actually calmed down after my epidural. It was super scary and one of things I actual worry about this time around. Thanks for posting.

  • Thanks for posting! I'm a FTM but this is actually one of my fears and I've already been discussing it with DH. It's one of the reasons I want to eat during labor to try and offset it. Not sure what might work best.
  • I got the shakes with my 3rd... I had a new nurse she started freaking out a little. My blood pressure dropped. Ha ha the software I think kept telling the new nurse emergency c section. .. when an older nurse came in they put hot water bottles under my arms and we continued on... it helped.

    The shakes were so annoying...
  • I had the shakes really bad with my first. It was a long labor that ended with a section. My second delivery was a RCS, and no shaking at all. So different!

  • I had crazy shakes on the operating table. The anesthesiologist above my head kept saying it's totally normal and I remember laughing about it.

  • I had the shakes during labor BEFORE I got the epidural. I think its a labor thing-not always a medication thing. It was not pleasant :( Glad it didn't happen the second time! Hoping it won't happen for the 3rd!
