Fit Mama Check in!

I've never started a check in thread before, so forgive me if it sucks!

I've been working out consistently for about 8 years now, most of which has had a focus on heavy weights low reps and lots of super sets. Since finding out about my pregnancy, I've toned it down a bit and now stay in the 10-12 rep range with lower weight. I'm getting ready to hit legs right now!!! My FAVORITE muscle group to work is back and I LOVE clean crockpot recipes that make meal prep easy!

What type of workout is your favorite?

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant?

What is your favorite healthy food?

Any major questions surrounding working out now that you are pregnant?

**i am no expert and probably can't answer your questions, but someone might be able to help!!

Re: Fit Mama Check in!

  • Yay, I love this thread - good job! :)

I loooove to work out too and I am an indoor cycle freak - I actually got my instructor certification a few months before the BFP but that's on hold for a while now, haha. I do yoga, pilates and lift with my hubby. I mostly do light-ish weights and high reps. I love working my arms/shoulders and back.

I have stopped spinning and hot yoga for the duration of my pregnancy but still run, swim and lift regularly. Plus hiking/walking, easy biking and other more leisurely activities outside for fun on the weekend.

Food wise I mostly ate organic, lots of veggies, beans, fish and poultry before getting PG and I will keep on my regular diet - just limiting my fish intake a bit more now - plus no more poke bowls :( .

My crockpot gets lots of use and I will throw in a bunch of chicken breasts with a bit of stock to make plain shredded chicken for the week. I will then flavor it for whatever we want to eat that day - lemon pepper for salads/wraps, BBQ sandwiches, fajita flavoring for burritos etc. Or I'll throw s whole tri tip in the crockpot with a simmer sauce and make yummy sandwiches for my hubby. Other than that, I will throw some meat/fish and veggies on a cookie tray sprinkle some seasoning on top and then roast it all for an easy one pot dinner.

Keep up the hard work healthy mamas!! Xoxo

  • Woohoo I'm glad!!! Love that chicken idea... I usually just make an entire crockpot of one meal and that's what I pack for us for lunch all week but your way has much more variety !

Of course now is the time my hubby wants to add more cardio to his workout routine lol! So when he does that I just walk. Since I eat healthy anyways I really haven't had to change much of that!
  • @saam0815 The plain chicken idea was actually my hubby's - he was getting sick of the same thing all week lol

Hello girls. Love this thread. I am an ultrarunner, which basically means I run a ton. I had a mc in September though so I've completely stopped running right now until the 2nd tri. I'm just really scared. My current dilemma is I'm registered to run the Boston Marathon in April and I'm not sure if I still want to go. This will be my third year in a row but it's a far and expensive trip from California. Hmmm...

Typically I eat very healthy but since my bfp I kinda just eat what doesn't sound nauseating. Oh yes, this is my third kiddo.
  • What type of workout is your favorite?

Well I mean my favorite is like horseback riding or playing football, but the one I actually do most often is jogging.

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant?

Not really changing anything here, just going to try to keep up my running routine and throw in some yoga and strength training.  I was a little lazy through my last pregnancy but I was dealing with severe car accident injuries so I think that's understandable!  I'm really motivated to work out throughout this pregnancy though.

What is your favorite healthy food?

I love all kinds of fruits and veggies, some of my favorites are bananas, spinach, green beans

  • @kattyleigh congrats on Boston! I've heard from my marathoner friends it is an awesome experience.

  • I was working out a lot prior to my IVF procedure, but they basically made me bedrest for 2 days and then only walking. I'm allowed to do more now (nonlifting), but I'm scared until I see the ultrasound on Tuesday and find out what I can do!

I just started running this year. Running halfs and signed up for 4 in the next 7 months! Trying to figure out how to manage it all. I'm already throwing up every meal so running isn't appealing. I have my next half in 9weeks. This is my fifth pregnancy and will be my third child. I am planning on running and working out through whole pregnancy, including first trimester.

  • lots of runners here!! Sounds great ladies :) let's keep some check ins going throughout our pregnancies! Maybe it can be some motivation or accountability !
  • I also run.  In fact, I am missing a half today because I found out I am pregnant and we are not sure if this will be a successful pregnancy yet.  More than likely me running would have no impact on whether I carry to term, but it makes me feel better to not risk it.  I would like to continue running.  I will until morning sickness kicks in around 6 weeks.  I have every intention of staying active, however the first tri has never proven to be a good time for me to continue a good workout routine.  Second tri I could spend all day in the gym.
  • This is a great idea. Wow lots of runners here! I'm a yoga teacher and adore my own yoga practice but since becoming pregnant and being so tired and sick I'm struggling to do as much.

What type of workout is your favorite?
6-12 rounds of sun salutations, a full yoga class, walks with my dogs and hubby in the forest.

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant?
The tiredness has got me! Finding it really hard to get through teaching my 1.5hour yoga classes. Tiredness and nausea does not make for a perky, active teacher! The days I'm teaching multiple classes I don't do my own practice other than some medtiation as I'm just too tired.

What is your favorite healthy food?
We eat mostly organic, mostly vegetarian with some meat when I feel my body needs it. But right now, finding anything that I want to eat is a challenge. Toast seems to be a winner for now. I miss my greens and smoothies but the thought of both makes me gag for now.

  • @CityWest I haven't hit any sickness yet (fingers crossed it stays that way w a healthy pregnancy of course) but the tiredness has definitely hit me. We usually get up at 4:30 am to head to the gym and that has been HARD. I love beach yoga in the summer time but can't seem to get into studio yoga. Wish I would though because I could use the flexibility!
  • What type of workout is your favorite?
I love most kinds of work outs. I primarily run, lift and a variety of plyo/cardio mixed with lifting. then I try to do yoga once a week as well. I like anything that is a challenge. I work out 5-6 days a week for 30-60 mins

Kudos to the ultrarunner - my younger brother is also an ultrarunner. He lives in CO and loves it.

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant?
I have not really changed my routine yet. I just watch my heart rate.

What is your favorite healthy food?
All things healthy are good for me. I also love using the crockpot. Now that it is starting to cool down here in the midwest I really like making soups with lots of veggies.
Any major questions surrounding working out now that you are pregnant?
    None currently
  • How far along are you? 4w5d

How are you feeling? Really sore boobs, tired, hungry and thirsty all the time. Also, I don't really have morning sickness, but certain smells will either make me gag or dry heave. That symptom seems to come around very rarely though.

Doing anything baby related today? Hanging out on The Bump.

Rant/Rave/Positive Vibes: Still just waiting for that first appointment in a little over a month! I am trying to get more positive, though, and think that this pregnancy will be OK.

    Questions? Not at this time.

GTKY- Tell us your favorite/least favorite parts of pregnancy so far. Feel free to include previous pregnancies if this is not your first. My least favorite part about pregnancy so far is worrying that I may miscarry again. My favorite part is the fact that my appetite has gone up. I have a disease that makes it to where I can't eat much at a time and only certain foods. But it's like the symptoms are going away for the meantime and I'm able to eat entire meals! That's very exciting for me.
  • Hi ladies!

What type of workout is your favorite? I do all Beachbody workouts. My favorite is 21 Day Fix Extreme

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant? not yet, but I will adjust when needed

What is your favorite healthy food? Plain Greek yogurt with strawberries

Any major questions surrounding working out now that you are pregnant? nope! I plan to continue throughout my pregnancy!

  • Hi ladies!

What type of workout is your favorite? My hubby and I go to the gym 4 to 5 days a week. We love lifting and running. We both played college sports so we lift pretty heavy.

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant? I've cut back a lot on the heavy lifting. My ob told me to stay under 20 lbs. I'm monitoring my heart rate during cardio.

What is your favorite healthy food? Cucumbers and hummus

Any major questions surrounding working out now that you are pregnant? I was told some yoga positions aren't okay anymore...anyone know some more about that? My gym doesn't offer prenatal yoga and this is my first pregnancy so trying to learn what is okay.
  • I want to talk to my dr first since I haven't been working out. I'm not a huge physically active person but I do love yoga and would like to do some low impact cardio... like cycling or something. My appointment is the 29th and want to ask and make sure I'm in the clear.
  • Hey ladies!

What type of workout is your favorite? I love indoor cycling and instruct 2-3 times a week. I also am in the process of getting my Group Power certification and hope to start instructing in February. I will also run as long as I can and when it's too much I will walk.

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant? I haven't changed my routine. I didn't slow down with my first and hope not to have to with this one. I will start to monitor my heart rate to make sure it doesn't stay over 150 though. I worked out until the day before my contractions started with my first and am hoping to workout/instruct through this entire pregnancy as well.

What is your favorite healthy food? We eat mostly organic. My favorite food right now is salad with lots of vegetables. My only craving with my first was oranges so I'm hoping to be as lucky this time.

Any major questions surrounding working out now that you are pregnant? Not at this time.

@Mrsrundell - If you love indoor cycling, keep at it. My first pregnancy, I took three classes a week until the end and was back in classes two weeks post partum. I had to give up running early because of hip pain but indoor cycling still felt great! The only thing you need to do is monitor your heart rate so it doesn't get too high. Let me know if you have any questions.
  • What type of workout is your favorite?
I do volleyball twice a week, go hiking 5 days a week & enjoy hoop dancing.

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant?
OB said I should stop playing Volleyball, so I'm looking for something to replace it. I'm thinking dance or yoga. Also, having to cut down on the amount of fish I eat. It's the primary meat I eat.

What is your favorite healthy food?
Smoked kippers, sautéed spinach with garlic & a sweet potato with cinnamon.

Any major questions surrounding working out now that you are pregnant?

I've never taken dance before but do routines with my hoops. My OB states not to start anything new, exercise wise. I think she's being overly cautious. If ya'lls OB said to stop one thing cold turkey (volleyball in y case) wouldn't it make sense to be able to take up something less demanding? Or am I not being cautious enough?
  • @Sekerambo Interesting.. I'm going to keep at it and just let me instructor know too. She will call me out if I'm slacking and has hopped off her bike to turn up my resistance! Lol thanks for the input!!
  • @CheriBaby- I know so many women that played volleyball (coed and women's) until the end of pregnancy. I played until I was 7.5-8 months, when our season ended. If it's a rec league where you have a chance of being run over then definitely get off the court. If you are on a team with people you've played with for a while and you don't have a fear of someone running into you, then I would talk to your ob again. Although, obviously you shouldn't dive.

  • What type of workout is your favorite?
    CrossFit!! And running!! Weight lifting.

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant?
Not really. Just monitor my self at the gym now. I don't go as hard in work outs. Take more breaks. I've been so tired it's been so hard to get the motivation to get to the gym after working all day.
What is your favorite healthy food?
Any veggie. And tuna! Too bad I have to cut out the tuna :(
Any major questions surrounding working out now that you are pregnant?
    Not This point.

@Mrsrundell - absolutely tell her if she is known for turning up tension for someone. Luckily, I've never had an instructor do that to me. I also would never consider doing that as an instructor, that's horribly rude!
  • @deanjacq I have an appointment tomorrow I'll ask about the yoga positions then! I'm interested to know myself, as I do like an occasional yoga class. I'm also wondering if some prenatal yoga will give me some good meditation strategies for those moments that I'm panicking abot the baby being ok in there!
  • What type of workout is your favorite?
Lifting & running. I ran marathon before having my son, and I used beach body's 21 day fix to lose my baby weight and get my body back in the last year, and I'm planning on continuing 21 day fix while pregnant and hopefully continuing other lifting as well.

Have you changed your routine since you found out you were pregnant?
A bit. I was going hard the couple months leading up until finding out I was pregnant. So just easing up a bit.

    Favorite healthy food?
    EGGS every creaking day!!

    Any major questions?

Not really:.. I ran over 400 miles when I was pregnant with my son... So I'm trying something different this pregnancy and seeing if my results and recovery are any different.

I was so worried with my first pregnancy that I would never be strong & fit again and I think I learned to just chill because I can get fit again. So I plan on relaxing a bit more and taking an occasion rest day.
  • I did Yoga today for the first time. This is going to be a new challenge. It was way more intense and humbling. I am hoping to add yoga into my regular workout routine for stress relief.
  • What type of workout is your favorite?
I mainly run 4 times a week and then do some HIIT training. I just wrapped up marathon training in November, so am taking it a bit easier now.

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant?
I've cut back on my distance since I'm still pretty early. Not running anything over 5 miles right now.

What is your favorite healthy food?
Love sweet potatoes. And salads with lots of healthy goodies in them.

Any major questions surrounding working out now that you are pregnant? Nope! Looking forward trying to stay fit through this pregnancy. It helped significantly with DD.

  • Hoooowww are so many of you all still keeping your routine??? .. from 5.5 weeks the nausea started.. Im doing all I can not to puke!  Im so scared Im going to lose all of the hard work I've done getting endurance to run in the coming weeks waiting for the nausea to subside! This basically happens on both my other pregnancies too.  Although it started early this time, previously I didnt get sick till 7 weeks.  Im just hitting 7 weeks mid week and already have had it for the past week and a half.. ugh!

  • What type of workout is your favorite?
    I'm a runner. A slow runner.

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant?
It hasn't yet.  Its been a really busy couple of weeks so I haven't laced up like I want to, but that should change now that I'm on a busy downswing so I should get back to running 2-4 times per week.  Last pregnancy I ran up until the day before our baby was born.  I had a HRM last time but not sure where it is so for now I'll just make sure I'm not feeling too fatigued and just listen to my body.

What is your favorite healthy food?
I'm a big fan of smoothies lately.  Banana, frozen fruit, spinach, carrots, almond milk, and peanut butter!

Any major questions surrounding working out now that you are pregnant?
Nope.  Looking forward to this checkin tho- It helped me so much last pregnancy!

  • I don't feel like crap yet, but I am interested in seeing how well I keep up a good routine. I am desperate to not get as reconditioned as I have in previous pregnancies. I would love to stick with a healthy routine so that getting back in shape is not an awful, uphill battle.
  • @CheriBaby why did your doctor tell you to stop playing volleyball? I've played for about 20 years and had intended to play until my belly gets in the way. I know not diving and things like that. Women on my teams have played well into the second or third trimesters-- hell, Kerri Walsh was five weeks pregnant when she won the Olympics. And I am no where near her level of intensity!

What type of workout is your favorite? I run 2-4 times a week, play volleyball 1-2 times a week, and CrossFit 3 times a week. I also throw some yoga in there sometimes.

How have you changed your routine since finding out you're pregnant? I've already told my CrossFit coach and he has a plan to help me adjust as I get further along. Other than that, I'm doing pretty good. I get winded way earlier so I've been consciously taking breaks and drinking more water. I'm just trying to learn to listen to my body and not push myself. I ran my second marathon back in October but I've dialed back my runs considerably since then. Mostly because I need to rehab a hip injury, but my exhaustion plays a role too.

What is your favorite healthy food? I suck at eating healthy. My go to "healthy" meal is probably stir fry or a burrito bowl.

Working out definitely helps curb my nausea. I haven't actually gotten sick yet but there have been a few close calls. I've found some evidence that exercise can help with m/s, even just a short 15 minute walk. It's all about what you can do. I feel pretty crappy every morning, but by the time I'm done with my warmup I feel much better. And the nausea usually doesn't come back until mid-morning or lunchtime for me. So maybe working out can help?

  • Having mild nausea now. I just power through. Also, you're already outside so, a few steps off the trail & kick some dirt over it is my game plan.
