Birth control while breastfeeding?

I'm breastfeeding, and my doctor mentioned that there are only two types of birth control that are safe while breastfeeding, the Depo Provera shot, and the "Mini-Pill". I was just wondering if any of you ladies have tried either of these and what you thought of them? I've heard of bad side effects from both of them.

  • You have to be extra vigilant with the mini pill and take it at the exact same time every day, or it will not be effective. You could also get an IUD, either hormonal or non, or I believe you could get the nexplanon implant as well.

  • I'm on the mini pill and have had no issues. I started at my 6 week visit. I have an alert on my phone to remind me to take it at the same time every day.
  • I'm taking the mini pill and did with DD1 as well. No side effects but I'm still paranoid about getting pregnant since timing is so important so we use a backup!

  • I started mini pill at 6 weeks pp. No problems with nursing or anything else.
  • I took the mini pill and am EBF and it dropped my milk supply.
  • There are other forms too...Many breastfeeding moms use IUDs or nexplanon. Basically anything progestin-only is fine.
