What type of c section closure: staples, stitches, glue?

Tried searching for this topic but didn't find anything.

I will be having a repeat c section 8 years after my first. Different doctor, different insurance this time around. I'm curious what people have had and their experience. What are they choosing if having a repeat c section?

I had stitches when I had my daughter. It was one long stitch that they removed a week later. I had a great recovery. I had friends that had staples and seemed to have a tougher recovery. I'm with Kaiser now and my friend who delivered by the same doctor, had the Dermabond glue. I'm not even sure if my Dr does stitches. I'll be asking at my next appt. Just curious to hear some real life experiences with the different options.

  • I've had dissolvable stitches the last 2 times and had no problems, so hopefully I'll have the same thing this time.

  • mine are 8 yrs apart too!

I had dissolvable stitches too. hoping for a vbac, but if another C is necessary, hopefully the same type of stitches.
  • I had stitches on the inside, glue on the outside. If I have to get a RCS, it'll be the same this time around.
  • My sister just had a c-section about a month ago. Her doctor used the dissolvable stitches, and her incision is healing really well with what appears to be very minimal (if any) scarring.
  • I had glue both times. And my scar us basically invisible. I'll have the same this time unless I need more to hold it shut (I shouldnt, but you never know) if I need more, my dr does staples, but only if needed.
  • Ooo good question. I didn't even realize there was a chance for a different way to close me up! I had dissolvable stitches that were awesome.

  • I had dissolvable staples. Two didn't dissolve and had to be pulled because they were poking me. She really had to pull on them and kept apologizing but I still had no feeling there so didn't feel a thing. lol.

  • I guess I was thinking that it depends which doctor in my group (of 6) does my repeat c/s.  I had dissolvable stitches last time with steri strips on top.  I will ask at my prenatal appt if each doctor has a trademark, just for fun.

In my previous work experience, I noted that surgeons tend to opt more for staples in repeat x2, 3, 4 cases.  Also, surgeons where I worked tended to pick staples for people with abdominal obesity.  Either way, staple removal is not painful.

  • I had glue and my scar is tiny and barely noticeable now. Lots of my friends had stitches. I think it just depends on your OB.
  • I wasn't given an option but had the glue. It scared me at first to look at it in the mirror, but my scar is so teeny tiny. Like a pencil line, around 1 week I peeled off the glue.. I doubt you're supposed to that but it started annoying me when the scar was healing and itchy. I'm getting it again this time. Hoping for as tiny of a scar and easy recovery

Haha...sorry this made me giggle because when my glue started peeling, I panicked and tried to paste it back on lol I must have been pretty drugged when the told me it would peel since DH told me they said something about it lol but Idr it at all lol

I've had glue twice and will be getting it again unless the dr decides I need more to hold it. If so, I'll be having staples.
