April 2016 Moms

Everlyn/Everlin

Ok- I am new to these discussion things so If I am not doing it right I apologize.

Anyways. My husband and I are expecting in April and we are struggling with a name. We like Evelyn and Everly. I know it all about us and not our mothers but of course one likes one and one likes the other. That is where Everlyn/ Everlin comes in. What do you all think as a combo of a name? It is def. growing on me, but I don't know how it will be perceived by the masses. A name is a huge deal that will be with you forever! Any help would be great! Thanks everyone!

Re: Everlyn/Everlin

  • I do not care for it, personally. It sounds made up and I am not a fan of names like that. I would pick one or the other (I actually love Evelyn, but DH isn't a fan). If you do go with your version, I prefer Everlyn over the other spelling.

  • I think she will forever be correcting people on either spelling or pronunciation because of the extra "r". I assumed it was a typo when I first started reading the post, and I would hate for someone reading an eventual resume to do the same!

Also, I know you didn't ask, but I would vote Evelyn between the two :)

  • I prefer Everlyn or Everlin, but I really prefer Evelyn over either of those choices. However, if you like Everlyn, go for it. Unique names aren't in any souvenirs, but they have interesting lives. Unique spellings are on the rise, too.

  • A combo name is not a real name, IMO. I would just go with whatever YOU actually like best and then maybe do something middle-name wise to honor/appease the other mother if it's that's important to you/them.

    I quite like Evelyn. (:
  • It sounds so close to Evelyn, she will probably get called that often anyway and have to correct people all the time. I like both names and I would pick between the two rather than combining.
  • Not a fan of the combo name at all; if I saw it written, I'd assume it was misspelled, and if I heard it said, I'd probably think that it was either mispronounced or that I misheard and I'd mispronounce it. I'd pick whichever name between Evelyn and Everly that you like best (for the record, I think both are beautiful choices and I can see why you're having trouble deciding!), and if your mother or MIL insist on knowing what you've settled on between now and the birth, you can tell them that you're very excitedly awaiting Baby Eve/Evie's arrival. You know, if nicknames are your thing.
  • Don't make up a name to satisfy your mothers. Evelyn would be on my list (if we have a girl) except a good friend of mine named her daughter Evelyn already and I don't want to steal :)
  • Evelyn. The other ones sound made up.

  • You asked for people's opinions...so you got them.  But I disagree with most of the PPs.

I think Evelyn, Everly, and Everlyn/Everlin are all nice names.  As far as spelling, I'm not sure why, but I like the written-out look of Everlyn better.  Go with what YOU like.  Don't let MILs or anonymous online posters make the decision for you.  I'm sure everyone has stories one way or another, but I have lived my 33 years with an interesting first name and a last name that has to be spelled out every time I use it--and it has not damaged me in any way.  (I like my interesting name!)  Good luck.  :)
  • If you are set on Everlyn/Everlin, then I think "Everlyn" is prettier. But honestly, it looks like a misspelling of Evelyn.
  • I would go with Everly, because Evelyn is too popular now. I never heard of Everly before but it is like Beverly without the B I guess.

Evelyn is a great classic name... and Everly is not really my style but could be a good modern/more unique option. PLEASE do not mash them up.

  • I don't like made up names either so I am not a fan. I would also assume it was misspelled, like others have mentioned. Evelyn would be on my list if a cousin of mine wasn't named that - I would never want her to think the baby was named for her lol!
  • Like others I don't care for made up smoosh names and I think Evelyn is a beautiful choice.  But for goodness sake, you and your husband pick the name you like best, don't feel obligated to obey your mothers' (or anyone else's) preferences!  This isn't going to be a one time thing--they are going to have opinions about lots of things relating to your LO, and you two need to decide what role their views will play in your parenting.  To me making an effort to balance their competing view points sounds like a task not with taking up.  Good luck with your decision!
  • I don't like those names... Evelyn is far prettier.
  • It's cute in theory, but Everlyn is hard to say. It reminds me of a student I had named Jonna. It took me half the term to realize that she was Jonna (Ja na) and not Joanna. She told me that it happens so often that she doesn't even bother to correct people.

I agree with PPs about Evelyn.

  • Why on earth would you worry about the name your mothers want?  It's your baby.  Don't compromise on a made up/mashed together hindrance of a name.  Not a fan.

Evelyn is lovely.  A classic name that people can spell and say easily.

  • I would have to say ex-nay on the combo names. My poor uncles name is a combination of Bernardino (my papa) and Eileen (my mama) creating "Berleen"

I would say no, and Evelyn is nice.
  • As a mother of an Evelyn, I have to say no. To me Everlyn sounds like how my 90 year old grandfather pronounces my daughter's name and it drives me absolutely insane. I actually don't like hard R's in the middle of most names because I think it sounds really harsh when pronounced with an American accent. That's why we've ruled out Charlie for this baby. It sounds great when DH says it with an English accent, but it sounds awful when I say it.
  • I like Evelyn, but Everlin/Everlyn just looks like you made a spelling mistake...
  • Honestly.... I agree with the ladies. I think Evelyn is a beautiful name but Everly is not my style and I am even less of a fan of a combo of both. It's weird how adding that one letter really doesn't do it for me.... Evelyn is a classic and it's definitely gorgeous!

  • Another ditto to the others.  I just don't understand made up names.  Evelyn is a beautiful name, don't butcher it.

  • Evelyn. Everly is trend city and the Everlyns just look like Evelyn misspelled.
  • ::Lurking::  Don't name your baby based on what someone else likes.  Are you going to parent one specific way because your mother or his mother does it that way?

  • DH and I picked out a separate L name to satisfy both my grandmother's name (Linda) and his grandmother's name (Luana) if we ever have a girl. If you like the name, go with it. If not, you can always pick an E name and say that it is for both of them. My dad's side of the family is Russian and Jewish, so they name after the dead. My great-grandfather thought it was a jinx to name after the living. My parents did a twist on the tradition and just used the first letter of my great-grandmother's name for me.
