Mattress protector/Car seat protector...

Alright ladies, I need some good recommendations for waterproof mattress protectors and something to waterproof my car seat just in case my water breaks while I am out and about. What do you all plan on using to protect your stuff? I've had a couple of people tell me that a towel probably wont do the job. I had my water broken at the hospital with my first and I remember it being A LOT of fluid. TIA

Re: Mattress protector/Car seat protector...

  • You can get a cheap vinyl mattress protector at target, the car you can use chucks pad.
  • Loading the player...
  • You can get a PVC free mattress protector online. I wouldn't buy anything too cheap and plastic-y, as you don't need your face in that kind of chemical off-gassing. We have these: https://www.amazon.com/Luna-Hypoallergenic-Waterproof-Mattress-Protector/dp/B002AQNXR4/ref=sr_1_13?s=bedbath&ie=UTF8&qid=1449701968&sr=1-13&keywords=Mattress+protector

Any kind of absorbent underpad would work for your car seat. Better yet, just grab yourself a small pack of incontience briefs (like Depends).

  • I just used those absorbent pee pads for toddler mattresses. They go underneath the sheets for your bed and spread across your car seat. Of course I took all these precautions last time and my water didn't break. It was broken for me at the hospital.

  • Wow I didn't even think of this! Hmmmm . . . now I guess I'll have to come up with a plan!
  • I just know my luck and my water will probably break in the most public of places possible. I will be investing in some Depends for sure so hopefully that will help with the vast majority of leakage. I will probably get a plastic carpet runner to go from my side of the bed to the bathroom door also. I really don't want to have to worry about cleaning my carpets, car seats, mattress etc as I go into labor. I am a clean freak so this stuff makes me anxious.

  • You may be fine with just towels. With my first I had my water break on its own while laying in bed and it was not the huge gush of fluids that they say it will be.

  • When my water broke last time I was on bed rest in a hospital ward. I woke up and for a second thought I'd peed myself and when I called the nurse she asked me that too lol. It wasn't this huge gush when I stood up either, just a small leak.
  • I was super paranoid about this we used a shower curtain under the sheet and under a blanket on the bed because we were too lazy and cheap to get a mattress cover. A week home with a newborn and he put her on the bed without a diaper we own a mattress cover and got it at Walmart

As for your car I would just use a towel, that's what I had and I also had extra pants and underwear in the car just in case, planned to send h home to get our go bags if I was actually out when it happened.

We didn't have this issue, and as a stm I laugh at myself about the things I was so worried about... Now I'm all meh whatever haha! I'm more worried about babysitter plans for dd than if my water breaks all over the store
  • I'm always hearing that it's very rare your water will break with a big, dramatic gush like in the movies. I would not be worrying about this if I were you. Maybe keep a towel in the car or something. With my last baby, I got up to pee in the middle of the night and my water broke in the hallway on the way back to bed. I was wet, the floor was wet, but it was as easy to clean up as a spilled glass of juice or something.
  • I would just use a towel?  My water broke in bed and it wasn't a big deal

  • I bought a pack of X-Lg puppy pads.  one or 2 for the bed, one for my chair at work and one for my car seat  (I'll throw a blanket over it so it's not obvious).
  • My water broke in bed with DS. It didn't gush out until I stood up. And there was A LOT!!! But not a drop in the bed.

My water broke with DS in a restaurant. I ran to the car and sat on reusable grocery bags. They did a pretty nice job.

I never had anything prepared with either and all was fine. I wouldn't worry too much about it. I think a folded towel would be fine.

  • I just bought this one. It's waterproof with a terrycloth finish, great reviews - only $20.  I figure it'll be nice to have in case of water break, leaky boobs, baby accidents, etc on the bed.

  • What @MrsSmithA said reminds me... It's a good idea to have a mattress protector anyway when BFing. I didn't have one at first and had to sleep on a towel to keep from leaking milk all over the bed at night, which would bunch up and get annoying. I didn't wear nursing pads at night a) to give them some fresh air, and b) because they'd slip all over anyway.
