Crawling

Please tell me my 8 month old is not the only one not crawling!  She has always hated tummy time, and wants to crawl so bad she just can't figure it out and ends up face planting into the ground and crying until I pick her up.  How can I help her???  I feel like she is behind and it is making me think I'm doing something wrong.

Re: Crawling

  • my son is exactly the same...

I try to show him he can reach out for things farther away and kinda move his legs to give him the idea he can bend the move forward.. I have spoken to other moms they are NOT behind .. actually they may never crawl and that's OK! its not even considerered a milestone anymore..

does she stand ? and sit ?? I also have a small seat for him I encourage him to learn to climb into its a work in progress.. but that's how I am doing it.

  • Ours is crawling, kind of. She just started on the fourth. She will get up on all fours and move one knee forward then kinda lunge forward. My DH and I have worked a lot with her on the floor trying to show her how to do it. But she's a bit ahead from what I hear. It'll happen for everybody.

Take it as a blessing in disguise... My son started crawling at 6 months and climbing by 7. Chasing him around everywhere has me exhausted! lol

But seriously though, your baby is just fine! All babies hit these milestones at different times. My son was on the early side, but my niece (who is now 3 years old) didn't start crawling until she was almost 11 months old! They all catch up to each other. I wouldn't worry unless your pediatrician starts worrying!

Oh and as for what you can do if you really want to encourage crawling... Find something that your baby is really super interested in. During tummy time put it in front of her but just out of her reach so she has to try to move to get to it. As she gets to it push it slightly further. I had an empty box on the floor in my son's room and that's what got him going. He hasn't stopped since! He started with army crawling and it quickly turned into full on crawling so he could chase after the dogs ;)

  • My 71/2 month old is not crawling. Whether babies crawl or not may simply be a matter of temperament. Some babies are more driven; other babies are more laid-back, happy to play with what's within their reach. Some kids never crawl. It's usually nothing to stress over as long as they're meeting their other developmental milestones, such as pulling to stand, cruising on furniture, and using their hands properly.

  • Its totally normal not to crawl yet. My DD isnt crawling, although she kind of wiggles and does the worm to get around. But my sister's baby, one month older, doesnt crawl at all!
  • Baby started crawling forward a week after he turned 8 months old. He was scooting backwards for 2 months before he developed strength to use his knees and arms to push forward!
  • My little girl turned 8months last Monday. I was starting to get concerned, too, this post and responses was uplifting for me to read. DD does a sort of 'army crawl' by pulling herself with her arms, or sometimes being on all fours then just sort of heaving herself forward. She seems to have the strength, but just not the coordination. I'm just making sure we're giving her plenty of time to move freely on the floor in hopes that it will improve as she practices.
  • My baby just turned 8 months and isn't crawling either! She isn't interested in being on her tummy at all! She hasn't said her first word, either. She does make some letter sounds, but no actual words! I'm concerned, but her doctor said not to worry until 9 months!

@kbaldwin2014 As I mentioned in the other thread, my 8 month old isn't crawling and hasn't said her first word yet. She only says 'ahhhhhhh' I am going to talk to her doctor about that tomorrow, but I'm not concerned at all about her not crawling yet.

Try joining the baby on the floor and encouraging him/her to get him/her comfortable on her tummy.

  • If she's in the floor, I sit with her!
  • @kbaldwin2014 You can also try propping a board book open in front of her?

  • She did get up on her knees in her crib yesterday!
  • Aww! Mine too. She has been doing the 'army crawl' for the past little while trying to reach something which is adorable- it's like twice the effort with half the results compared to regular crawling lol. But today a few times she went from sitting to down on her knees in the crawling start position but she hasn't got going yet.
