D&C in a few hours, needing advice or comfort or any kind of help...

Just to kind of introduce myself, my name is Kelsey. I'm 20 years old & just had my first baby on Mother's Day of this year (2015). I had very few complications with that pregnancy. I had to go see a specialist a few times to monitor my daughter's brain & heart growth, because I suffer from a rare form of Epilepsy. Nothing out of the ordinary with any of that besides a small heart murmur, but the doctors had told me most babies have heart murmurs & they do eventually go away & my daughter's did go away as they said it would. Within that pregnancy, I found out I have blood type RH negative and had to get a Rhogam (sp) shot at 6 months.

Here's where I'm needing adivce, comfort & help....

I found out I was pregnant again late October. I got my first ultrasound around Oct 15-17 to find out how far along I was. So, we saw nothing besides the sack. They asked me to return in about a month to see if we could get a better look at baby. So about 3 weeks pass and we get the second ultrasound & they were able to measure baby at 6 1/2 weeks, but when they went to listen to the heart beat it was extremely slow. They asked me to return again in a week to see if baby was growing as it should. I return a week later & found out I had lost the baby not even the day after the last ultrasound. This is my first miscarriage ever & it tore me apart.

Since then, I have been trying to see my OBGYN & my appointments kept getting pushed back. I finally got to talk with her yesterday after running my levels to see if they had gone down from the last ultrasound when we also did blood work & they were not dropping as fast as they should be. Yesterday (12/08/15) we scheduled my D&C for THIS morning (12/09/15) in less than 3 hours... I am extremely nervous, I have no idea what to think or expect. My OBGYN informed me on what happens in a D&C, but just over night I've gotten a stuffy nose, and I'm just really worried that when I receive the anesthesia that because I can't breathe out of my nose whatsoever that I won't be knocked out completely & I'll still be awake during the D&C & feel / hear everything.... Really, it's more the fear of being knocked that's getting to me right now & I'm so extremely nervous... Please, if anyone else has ever had a D&C performed - if you are willing - let me know how it went for you & if you can give me any tips or advice for what to expect, please help.

Hello, I am so sorry for your loss! I have had two D&Cs. I was also nervous about being put under, but they are very cautious and will ask you questions, and ask them questions or bring up any concerns you have. The waiting, getting an IV (for me, it was of antibiotics to prevent infection), is the worst part, to me. The actual procedure is short and you will be waking up before you know it.

I never had pain, just some discomfort and some bleeding. And I took nice naps when I got home and rested easy for a few days.

I bet you will feel a lot of relief when it's done and take your first steps to healing emotionally once the physical part is over.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this, though. I am sure they will take great care of you!

I am so sorry you are going through this. I know you are nervous, but they will make sure you are completely under anesthesia beforehand. Sending you big hugs.

I'm sorry you're going through this. I don't have experience yet- mine is on Friday- but for me it's helping to think of it as being similar to having my wisdom teeth taken out. I was really nervous about that as a teen but it was over before I knew it and really not so bad as I thought. I actually felt surprisingly well rested when I woke up. From what I've been reading about D&C, it seems to be similarly a quick in & out procedure with a fast recovery time- probably even faster, less complicated and less painful. 

I could be totally off base here but that's what I've been comparing it to in my head. Maybe you haven't had your wisdom teeth taken out that way but I bet you know people that have.

I think that is a good comparison! Also, it's quicker and yes, faster recovery for me. At least I could eat...which I did a lot of the week following the procedure.

Hi, sorry for your loss! I think I am a bit late to the thread, you probably already had your procedure, but just wanted to add on just in case and also check-in. How did it go?

I also have had 2 d&cs and agree with PPs comments, the actual procedure it is very easy. Afterwards, you can rest and please just keep track of your bleeding, if it become excessive (3 pads every 30 min, I was told) call your doc/go to ER, but that's rare.

The biggest recovery is psychological and emotional, and that is with any mc (regardless of d&c).

I'm so glad someone else on here is nervous about the D&C, too! It's looking as if I may have to schedule one soon, too, and I am also nervous about the going under part and not being totally 'out', because I have pretty bad allergies and my nose is always slightly stuffy anyway. Let us know how it goes! I wish you a speedy recovery and back to TTC soon... Sending virtual hugs!

I just got back from mine. Not too bad. I had to put on a gown which actually was much nicer than standard and even hooks up to a heat pump, which is nice because IV fluids can make you really cold. They asked if I was bleeding and I said yes so I had to wear their weird mesh underwear and a pad. 

They took me to pre-op and started IV fluids. The nurse gave me lidocaine first which stung but then the IV itself really didn't hurt. Some nurses and the anesthetist and my doc came to talk to me. When they were ready they gave me Versed to relax me before wheeling me to the OR. They gave me something else to knock me out and the last thing I vaguely remember is putting my feet in the stirrups, still gowned, before my eyes snapped open and they told me it was over and took me to the recovery room. They'd also given me Zofran to make sure I wouldn't feel sick. 

They gave me snacks and coffee and had me go to the bathroom, then took my IV out and gave me some instructions before sending me home. I cramped a bit at first but even by the time I left it really wasn't bad and they asked me to rate my pain several times. I have an Rx for Percocet but probably won't use it. I took some Ibuprofen but probably could even get by without that. I still have iodine all over me. I had an oxygen mask during the procedure (so I'm told, apparently I wasn't awake for that) but all drugs were given IV. 

It appeared to be a lot of blood at first but it really just seemed that way because they sometimes pump the uterus full of saline, making it seem like more blood is coming out than there really is. I checked in at 6:45, surgery was scheduled for 8:15 (not sure when it actually started), spent some time in recovery before going home, was home by 10:15. 

Bring a book. They wouldn't let me bring my phone into pre-op with me so I'm glad I brought one because I really needed the distraction and daytime television wasn't going to cut it. Hope this helps someone that is waiting to go through it themselves.

@FiancB: Thanks for your detailed description... that definitely takes some of the mystery out of what's going to happen. I've never been put "out" for any procedures, let alone something like this... so it helps to know!
