Trouble TTC

Did you share your charts with the doctor?

Hi all,

DH and I are undergoing infertility testing (SA, bloodwork, HSG - DH is going to urologist for follow-up due to low motility and morphology). I'm really frustrated because the dr. sent me for bloodwork on CD 25 even though I told her I normally O late around CD 23. Well this cycle I O'd CD 24 based on BBT charting, but of course bloodwork came back saying I hadn't O'd (due to it being too close to O to pick up progesterone change). I go back to the dr. next week and really want to bring a print out of my charts. I've been on and off charting since we started TTC a year ago and I know I O every month based on my BBT. I just don't want the dr. to put me on meds I don't need because she thinks I didn't O.

My question is, have you shared your charts with your doctor? What was their reaction? Did they find it helpful? I told my dr. that I charted but she didn't ask to see them or anything which I thought was a bit odd because I feel like they could be really helpful to her (but hey, what do I know?!). Thanks all!

  • I took mine just in case but I never felt the need to pull them out. My doctor and I were pretty much on the same page already so it wasn't necessary.

  • I took mine, but my doctor didn't even look at them. He said their utility at that stage was useless as I would have already come in if my charts showed I wasn't ovulating or if they showed a luteul phase defect. Your doctor will most likely put you on ovary stimulating drugs regardless. For example, I ovulate on my own every month and my DH was fine but I still wasn't getting pregnant. So, he put me on ovulatory induction to give more eggs and so he monitored and timed my cycles. He also put me on progesterone supplements as they won't hurt, only help your chance of pregnancy.

  • I just had my first RE appointment yesterday. I brought my charts along with me not expecting my RE to even look at them. To my surprise, he asked if I was temping or using OPKs and I told him I had my BBT charts with me. He asked to look at them and thanked me for bringing them in. I was pleasantly surprised. Some RE's don't even bother with them, some apparently do. I would bring them any way just in case.

  • My doctor didn't want to see my charts, but I gave him a sort of summary of what I had been charting in the past 12 months or so.

  • Neither my RE or my OB were very interested in my charts.  All three doctors I've been to have looked at my progesterone test which were done way at the end of my cycle, and were fine with the fact that they were normal for that time of the month.  So, in my experience speaking with the doctors, the test isn't only done to confirm ovulation, so testing at other times of the month isn't out of the ordinary.

I think its important to know what each test and medication is for, and if you have concerns or questions to be very clear. If your doctor wants to put you on ovulation medication, and you aren't comfortable with it because you already ovulate then be upfront about that.  My current doctor was very receptive to the fact that I don't want to take any ovulation meds just to throw shots in the dark, when realistically, ovulation is not my problem.
