Zeke for a boy?

My husband and I are having trouble agreeing on a name for our second son (our first son is Blaise). He really likes the name Zeke because it is unique, but not weird. I like the name but I'm still not sure about it. It's very frustrating because we agreed on our first son's name right away.

I have a first cousin named Zack and I'm afraid that Zeke sounds too similar. I don't want anyone to think we named our son after my cousin. Any thoughts on this name choice?

  • I knew a kid named Ezekiel who went by Zeke and I really liked that - but I don't think Zeke by itself is a name?  It's a completely different name from Zack.  Like PP said if they were sibs it might sound a little too close, but since they're not it's no biggie.
  • I know someone whose first name is Zeek and that's his first full name. I don't think it's too close to Zack.

  • I don't think it's too close to Zach. Also since you have a Blaise zeke would be a fine standalone name IMO.
  • I'd do Ezekiel nn zeke. It will give him more options when he's older, is still uncommonish, and honestly, people will assume it's a nn for Ezekiel anyway.
  • Also agree with the others that Zeke as a nn would be better, with Ezekiel as the full name.

  • I like Zeke as a NN for Ezekiel. I don't think it's too close to Zack, especially since they aren't siblings.

    I agree with this
  • I think Zeke is uncommon enough that it doesn't have to be a nn for Ezekiel, if that makes sense. It can stand alone. It isn't like naming your son Ben or Josh.

I wouldn't worry about cousin Zach. It would be different if it were your son's first cousin, someone he would grow up with.
  • Zeke is a NN

  • Although Zeke is more of a nickname, I love Zeke but cannot stand Ezekiel. I am not one to like NN as a FN, except in this situation because of how much I love Zeke and how much Ezekiel makes me cringe.

I don't think that it is too close to Zack.

  • NMS but it's but terrible. I knew an old man named Zeke and I know someone whose young son is Zeke.

  • Zeke is better than zack.
  • I agree with it being a nickname for Ezekiel. It's not bad.
  • I love Zeke but I think it's definitely a nn. Also, Zeke Braverman was an awesome TV dad... man I miss Parenthood.
  • My grandfather's NN was Zeke so I'm partial to it, but only see it as a NN for either Ezekiel or, less traditionally, Isaiah. I'd stay away from using it as a FN.

Zeke is totally a nn, BUT I hate any longer forms. I say if you're like me, just go for it and use Zeke. It's special enough that it works IMO.
  • I also prefer Ezekiel nn Zeke, but you could do worse than just Zeke. It sounds good with Blaise. I do not think anyone will think you named Zeke after your cousin.
