Night shift mamas?

Hey ladies! Anyone else work the occasional night shift? As you can probably tell (by my posting on every board) it's been a less than adventurous night here in the ER!

Re: Night shift mamas?

  • Night shift pediatric CVICU RN here!

Night shift is rough on my body anyway and being pregnant now I am soooooo tired after my shift! Glad to be off tonight I will be spending it sleeping.

  • I do! We'll sort of. I work from 3 p.m. to midnight or later. Guess that's more of an evening shift. But I do it every day so I have a consistent sleep schedule.
  • Night shift behavioral health nurse here! I do three 12 hour shifts per week.
  • Pediatric RN here! Currently I work days as I just cannot do nights anymore with two young kiddos. But I worked nights through both previous pregnancies no problem. Though once I did fall asleep. Oops.
  • I work rotating shifts as a lab tech at the hospital. :) I have to give us all mad props for being pregnant and working off shifts. Working off shifts is exhausting all on its own without being pregnant. Whew!

  • Cardiac ICU nurse here. Currently on my lunch break! As long as I stay consistent with my sleep times I do okay. Three to Four 12 hour shifts kills me though.

  • Hi guys,
I am currently on graves as well. We work 10hr shifts, (4 on/3 off)and while I'm not in the ER it's just as concerning being in the field (I'm LE). It's been harder to sleep the last couple of days and significantly more difficult maintaining a routine eating. We are 5w 2d today and our ultrasound is on the 28th. I'm not sure when to tell my department.
  • Night shift ED RN here, we work 10 hour shifts though, but I work from 9pm - 7am, and then come home to a two year old little girl. We are due 8/21/16. I feel so tired lately, like I could sleep 95% of the time and it still wouldn't be enough. Some days it's super quiet and some days you don't sit down. Thankfully two of my MD's for our department are pregnant as well and really understanding. One is 12 weeks, the other is near 20 weeks.

Odd question, but do you feel like your medical training makes pregnancy a little scary? I'm actually an RT, and I attend all the "bad deliveries (less than 35 weeks, mec, mom or baby not doing well etc)." It sure puts a different perspective on things!
  • Yes it is definitely more scary! I work with babies who have congenital heart defects and am terrified of having a baby with with a heart defect or a syndrome of some sort. On the plus side though, I am glad that I have the medical training to recognize if something is going wrong with my baby at home and I know what to do to help them.

Getting ready to work the next 3 nights in a row when all I want to do is curl up on the couch and nap :(. Here's hoping for an easy assignment!

  • I'll be bumping during the night at work. I don't find it so bad yet. I work in a lab that is almost open 24/7 so I work overnight full time. DH is a SAHD while he finishes his degree and allows me to get the sleep I need.
