Breastfeeding while pregnant

Anyone else still breastfeeding an older child?
How old are they?
Are you planning to nurse throughout your pregnancy?
Hoping they wean on their own?
Do you want to tandem nurse?
Feeling any breast/nipple pain?

Ds was 2 in July and still nurses to sleep. I had no intention of doing extended breastfeeding. It just kind of happened....
I've heard that pregnancy can change the taste of the milk so I'm hoping ds weans on his own. I have no desire to tandem nurse. It would be nice to have my boobs to myself for at least a few months! I don't have any pain yet.

Re: Breastfeeding while pregnant

  • My son is almost 20 months old and he still nurses. I nurse him to sleep for naps and bedtime. I did not plan on still nursing him to sleep for naps, but I created a habit that is hard to break.
My plan is for him to wean around 2 years old, which will be in April. But sometimes I don't see that happening on his terms. I really would like to have them to myself for at least a couple months before the baby arrives.
I definitely would not prefer to tandem nurse.
That would be great if he self weaned due to the taste, but I don't really see that happening. He really enjoys nursing and I think it's going to come down to me just not allowing him to anymore. But that will be pure hell when the time comes :(. I'm really just dreading the whole thought of it.
I have no soreness at all at this moment, thankfully.

  • @MrsBSharp86 I'm feeling the exact same way about having to force weaning. It will be so hard on not just him but me too! I also don't know how to break the habit of nursing to sleep. It's the only way I've done it for over 2yrs!! We will have to have a breastfeeding check in/support group!
  • I am definitely not looking forward to it either! Sometimes I doubt myself. Should I try to wean him or just go with the flow. It's something I battle with everyday because I don't want to take a good thing away from him. He is a very strong willed boy, so I don't see him taking it lightly. Also, I just don't think he could fall asleep without nursing.
We definitely need a check in/support group for any new ideas/tips that we can up with :)
  • Thanks for starting this @andrea0418!

My daughter is 13 months old. She nurses about 4-6 times during the day and 2-3 times at night. I do plan on nursing throughout the pregnancy, but I hope that she cools her shit with the night nursing. I am looking into night weaning soon, because I need to sleep at some point. I do want to tandem nurse. My boobs feel tingly and full, like they are constantly letting down. Strange.
  • My son turns two this week. I want to tandem nurse, so I hope he doesn't wean when my supply drops. I haven't had any pain or soreness yet with this pregnancy, but I had toe curling pain during nursing earlier this year before a loss.

  • @Chichigo the same thing happened to me. Before my loss I had nipple pain, not toe-curling like you, but uncomfortable. Not now. Does your son night-nurse still? Nurse to sleep?
  • I am currently still nursing my son and he will be 13 months tomorrow. I love nursing him and he loves to be nursed. I don't plan on tandum nursing, so I hope he self weans, I can't imagine forcing him to stop. It will make me sad to stop nursing him.
  • My 14 month old son nurses about twice a day, but uses me for a pacifier a lot in the evenings. He has weaned himself this far and I don't want to force him to fully wean. However, I would prefer not to tandem nurse but if my son needs the security I will let him join the new one. So we will see what happens :-)
  • DD will be 2 in March and still nurses 2-3 times a day. My goal was to make it to 2 and hopefully have her self wean. I will try to make it as far as I can but I'm unsure about tandem nursing. I'll just take it one day at a time. No discomfort here yet but I'm only 3+6 so it's a bit soon

  • My 14 month daughter nurses at night and has pumped milk in her sippy at daycare. I plan to keep nursing as long as my supply keeps up and look forward to tandem nursing. I've always had oversupply anyway. I'm a little tender but not too bad. I wonder about tandem at night though. That might make sleep elusive if she is still nursing at night. But we will find a rhythm. We've had a loss before so I'm just so hopeful this will stick that I'm not worried about nursing yet.

  • My daughter is 19 months and we are self weaning as well. She actually has been nursing soooo much this last 2 weeks. Not sure if its teething or hormones. At first I was getting really upset and wanted to start weaning because I just wanted my personal space. Then I found out I was pregnant and realized that our special time just for us wasn't going to last much longer. I plan on letting her nurse until she decides she is done. If I end up tandeming, I'm okay with that too.
  • My son is 18 months and still nurses. He seems to be extra clingy and wants to nurse more lately. I do not want to be tandem nursing so I'm hoping the change in taste will cause him to self wean.

FWIW my daughter had a period around 18 months where she wanted to nurse around the clock it seemed. It passed though so hopefully it will for you too. We've been consistently at 2-3 times a day

  • @ThePax89 He just started sleeping through the night, but only if we let him sleep in our bed. He wakes around 5 or 6, nurses for two minutes, then sleeps until 7 or 8. My husband is going to start offering cuddles and water and see if that can get him settled.

  • I feel like I'm having an aversion to breastfeeding and it makes me sad. I'm almost getting nauseous every time DD wants to nurse and I've been so tired that I just want to be left alone. It makes me feel so guilty because she's always gotten 100% of my attention 24/7 but lately I've just been so touched out. Idk if it's the pregnancy, or the fact that we're in the middle of packing for our big move next week but bleh

  • @amandoza23 I'm sorry. I hope it gets easier for you!
  • Anyone else still breastfeeding an older child? yes!
How old are they? 13 months
Are you planning to nurse throughout your pregnancy? yes - at least until she is 18 months
Hoping they wean on their own? yes, but not until 18 months
Do you want to tandem nurse? no - but I will if she is not interested in weaning
Feeling any breast/nipple pain? not yet

I tandem nursed for 5 months when DD2 was born. All was well, but honestly, I would be more than ok if DD2 weaned before LO #4 arrives in August.
