I'm 12 weeks and I was trying to hide it until around 20 but I had to tell my boss Friday because I have a 3 hour appointment on Monday and he would have pushed about what the appointment was for. Wanted to hide it because I'm worried about it affecting a job promotion I'm possibly up for. Another girl at work is pregnant right and came out a few weeks before me and I've already heard talk about how her maternity leave is playing a part on if she is promoted.
Yeah, that's discrimination, and you are a witness to those rumors. I don't know how your work operates, but all you should have to say is you are having a medical appointment and it's private. It's illegal for them to pry about that, Hippa and all.
Just curious - is it discrimination if maternity leave can affect a promotion, but when your promotion heavily relies on you being in the office? For example, at my last job, I know my maternity leave held me back. But promotions were based on "billable hours", and while on maternity leave, I was obviously not billing hours. I thought of it as, ya, that sucks. I didn't look at it as discrimination though personally. While I was not working for 3 months, people were busting ass at work, and I only busted ass for 75% of the year. I know many people's job situations are different, and I no longer work with billable hours, so in my current role I would call it discrimination.
I'm at 14w4d and I'm still trying to hide it at work- not going well. Nothing fits well and I don't have enough baggy clothes to cover. And now that it's getting cold outside sweaters make me look more preggo than I am! I'm just so nervous to say something and then have to retract. I think people just assume I'm getting fat, which isn't too far from the truth. Come on definite baby bump!!
I am still hiding at 11w5d. Trying to get through our company christmas party. We have annual raises and I know mine will be effected if I announce prior. We have another ultrasound on Wed if all is good we are going to tell my husbands family. Mine knows because we are always with them I figured they would have already noticed. Trying to wait till next year to tell work or at least a couple more weeks.
@nicknshan yes that is still discrimination, because they cannot hold maternity leave against you. Time out of the office for a medical issue or pregnancy is protected under FMLA... therefore they can/should only base your performance on the time you were in the office... i.e. the amount of billable hours you had during your non-leave time. The 12 (or so) weeks you were out on leave should not be factored in at all. If they actually admitted that to you - well that is a lawsuit waiting to happen.
*edited to add - I run an HR department and deal heavily with employment law, FMLA, etc. etc.
@MsBeachNJ yes - they admitted it. It was a small company that I left (overworked and underpaid surprise surprise). They basically said I would never be promoted if I couldn't put in the same effort as everyone else. It sucked. I quit. And thank goodness I did!
My boss flat out told me today not to tell hr my maternity leave / return to work plan Bc they are idiots and would try to ruin it. I want to work from home for 6 months and my bosses are on board but HR would say hell no. grrrr. Glad my boss is on my side tho!
I'm 12w4d and haven't told anyone at all. Only me and my husband know. I'm scared to tell my family/friends because of my loss in July. I'm scared they'll judge me or something for getting pregnant again so soon. I won't be able to hide it much longer though since this is my fourth pregnancy and my belly is starting to get a bit more round than usual.
