NT results - cue the worry. Update #2

CourtJackCourtJack member
edited December 2015 in June 2016 Moms

So, had my 12w scan today. It was exciting (despite having to pee SO BADLY). HB was 165.

But, my NT measurement is 4.0. I'm 35 so I know this is cause for concern. I also know this indicator alone doesn't necessarily mean anything (I know there are lots of false positives) but it's enough to have me worried. Anyone go through this before? The tech didn't say anything, so I suppose I just wait to hear from my midwife?

I'm not sure what I'm looking for by posting. I guess I just wanted to share and I appreciate any input or advice.

Thanks ladies

**So I just got a call from my midwife. She asked if i could leave work and go home and she'd meet me there to talk. So I went home, scared, and waited. She came over and we sat down and she told me the blood work came back and that it shows I have a 1 in 6 chance of Downs. So now it's onto genetic counselling and more advanced tests to get some actual answers. No clue what to think. In a bit of shock. Staying hopeful. I guess it's all I can do.

***********UPDATE #2**********

Apparently all I had to do was complain on the Monday Bitchfest thread to get the call. Panorama came back low risk. Less than 1 in 10000 and we're having a boy!!

F-U  one in six odds!!!!! Thank you all SO MUCH for your support. I feel like 100000lbs has been lifted off my shoulders. I am SO happy!

  • Sounds like a great heartrate! I haven't been through this before (NT scan in 2.5 weeks), but I just wanted to say I would recommend talking to your midwife--if only to ease concerns. Did she say she's planning to call in a certain timeframe? Are you able to just call and leave her a message asking to discuss in detail?

Another thing--would your insurance cover non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT) to get a more accurate answer? I know my/most insurance will cover if you're 35+.

If this were me, I know I'd feel better at least talking it through and/or getting a more definite answer via the blood test.

I'm sorry you're in limbo. That's a tough place to be. Hugs, lady!

  • I don't know much about the NT, they don't do it down south, but definitely call your midwife to ease your mind. And I think you're over 35 so you qualify for a panorama like test. Sending good thoughts your way, these tests with their false positives are a so hard.

  • My ultrasound tech told me the measurement only contributes to 3% of the test as a whole and that the bloodwork is way more conclusive. My measurement was under 1 and that had us freaked out because it was under the normal measurement. She reassured us that it's no reason to worry and we'd know more with blood results. You have to wait FOREVER for these results, try not to worry too much until you get your results and know more.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it is nothing!!!
  • With my first pregnancy my son had a high NT measurement I don't remember what it was exactly. I ended up going to a genetic counselor and having a very long ultrasound that examined every physical detail. The doctors determined my risk for chromosomal abnormalities was very low, but with the abnormal NT result no one could say for certain my baby was fine. Even at delivery I had about ten extra NICU nurses and doctors in the OR "just in case". In the end my son did not have any chromosomal abnormalities or health issues. That whole experience was very worrisome and traumatic I felt like I couldn't enjoy my pregnancy because I was so afraid of the unknown. This pregnancy I opted out of the NT scan completely. I'm doing the routine blood work such as the quad screen but that's it. The abnormal NT result could mean something or it could mean nothing which is why I won't do it again. I'm sorry your going through this and I hope your medical team can answer your questions and put you at ease.
  •  I am so sorry you are going through this, so much worry goes along with being pregnant, I never really knew before.

    Praying that all is well!!
  • CopperLane  said, the measurement itself is a small piece of the puzzle.  Until they calculate with bloodwork, the odds aren't that conclusive.  And in any event, the NT scan can only estimate your odds, and you have lots of options for further testing once you have that information.  Try not to panic! Thinking lots of good thoughts for you and your little one.

where down south are you? I live in SC and I got my NT done Monday and results back yesterday, maybe they give you a choice? Or don't offer if you don't have risk factors??
  • I am so sorry you are dealing with this!!  I will be keeping you in our prayers :-) Hugs.

  • @bsumter0330, were in TN:) I was in nc (hubs is military) for last pregancy and they definitely don't do it, mind you had never heard of it! I'm from the Boston area so all of my close girlfriends were telling me what I needed, NT being on the top of that list. I've already had the panorama so we've got everything covered this time around.

It might not be the south, it might be the military that doesn't do it. I'm sure tri-care only covers the bare minimum. That was my experience when my husband was A/D in the Marine Corps at least

  • Yay another masshole:) Gotta love the military @alysemciver!! Tho I will say I didn't pay a dime for my previous pregnancy/birth, can't beat that! And my panorama is covered:)

  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. The chances are slim anything will be wrong but you'll be in my thoughts.
I'm sorry to the other ladies that have gone through this too.

  • No advice but I feel your pain. I had mine Thursday. They were 45 minutes late. Baby wouldn't cooperate or move. Was lying in an unfavourable position. So no pics and no measurements for me. I have to go back in 5 days for followup. Feeling very worried about this unfortunately.
  • My son had a marker for downs last time - an echocardiogenic focus. They scared the piss out of us and rushed is to high risk for a more in depth ultrasound. They wanted us to do an amnio, but we refused and did Mat21 instead, which turned out fine. Don't freak!

  • Thanks again ladies. It does really help to read all your reassurances :-)
  • I actually just had my NT scan on Friday and my number came out at 3.4 ... sigh... I go in tomorrow to do the Materit21 test (I'm not sure exactly what it's called) Trying not to panic until I get the results back but it's hard especially bc we had an early loss in sep. Reading about other people's stories has helped me feel better so thank you everyone. This test also came two day after I had regular check up and was freaking out bc I already gained 6lbs - stupid I know when there is so much else to worry about. Now I gladly gain 100 lbs if it meant the baby was healthy. Anyways just want to say I'm thinking of you and hoping everything works out.
  • I don't know how I'm just seeing this now. As many PP's have said...I don't have a lot to offer other than my positive thoughts & prayers. I hope your midwife is able to provide you with even more reassurance. Keep us posted!!

  • I'm sorry that I missed is post too. But I wanted to just post to show my support and I will keep you and your LO (and the other mamas waiting on retest) in my thoughts for a perfect outcome. Good luck to you. I remember my last BMB there were lots of people who got false positives and who needs rechecking.

  • The whole thing is terrifying, that much is for sure.  Definitely try to relax- wait for the bloodwork and if they're still concerned, do the Maternit21 or whatever version it is near you- it's 99% accurate for Downs and the major trisonomies, and it's much safer than CVS (which I had last pregnancy, and which was AWFUL), or a amnio.

Wishing you the very best, and hoping for a good result.

I'm in Texas and I have my NT test done tomorrow

  • Aww mama, I'm so sorry you have to worry about this. You have a 5/6 chance of no abnormalities though! I know it probably doesn't help but the odds are in your favor. I don't know if it will give you hope but all the tests my mom had with my sister came back that she had downs and was born without any issues. I'll be thinking of you and waiting to hear how everything works out for you
  • @courtjack - Not the outcome I know you were hoping for.  Huge hugs to you, Momma.  I hope the genetic counsel can give you some guidance.  1/6 odds still means you have an 83% of it not being Downs.  I know that isn't a lot of comfort right now though.  My T&P are with you.
  • I'm sorry that this is a worry for you.  I hope that the additional testing gives you a definitive answer.  The waiting and uncertainty is so hard.

  • Thanks guys. Yah it sounds less scary when you put it into %'s. Just the waiting is gonna be so hard :(
  • Lots of hugs for you lady. Try and stay positive and hope for the best. The waiting game is never fun. You've got all the support in the world here though, so keep us updated.
  • Im sure those numbers are hard to hear, but I'll echo PPs that the odds are still in your favor of your child not* having Downs. Hang in there, lady. Hoping for the very best for you!
  • Oh @courtjack, definitely not the outcome you wanted, but the percentages are still in ur favor and with all the testing out there you'll find out everything you need to know. It sounds like they'll do a lot of tests hopefully so you'll know for sure?! The waiting game is brutal, deep breaths, day by day. Sending you big big hugs momma:)

  • I agree with others that it's best to try and focus on the positive odds, though it's obviously hard to do! I'm hoping for the best outcome for you and your LO.
  • Sending so many prayers your way. 1 in 6 is still a really good chance, I'd bet on those odds.
