Everything taste....

It started off as salty but now everything I eat taste sweet. It's really strange. I can eat carrots or Cherrios and the same taste buds seem to be activated. It's taking all the joy out of eating.
Is this/ has this happened to anyone else?
Is there a way around it or am I stuck?

Re: Everything taste....

  • I haven't experienced it quite like that, but altered taste (dysguesia) is supposed to be really common-- and temporary. Last pregnancy, until around 5 months, lots of things that I would normally like tasted way too sweet to me. One day it just suddenly got better. I think that's one of the reasons why I wanted so much spicy stuff because it was the only type of food in which the flavor really popped.

  • For me, I kept over-salting while cooking or adding way too much spice for MH. I think it was because of the normal nasal congestion that ramps up, usually in the 2nd and 3rd tri, but can start a little earlier. It sort of dulls your sense of taste because you lose the smell component. Definitely annoying, but one of those normal weird things that happens to your body during pregnancy.

  • Every time I eat a soft taco from Taco Bell, it tastes like peanut butter. In a disgusting way. No big loss really, I only have it when my husband drunkenly gets Taco Bell and gets sad if I don't partake. But also I've been a lot more sensitive to sweet stuff in general, which kind of makes me sad because I have the biggest sweet tooth ever, and usually I love it.
  • I'm just happy to know I'm not alone in my taste bud change up.
Usually I love food... like I really love food and rely on Weight Watchers to maintain a healthy weight because otherwise I'll eat... everything. But since that BFP I haven't been able to eat like I use to. I miss it. Food was my friend.

  • I couldn't eat peanut butter with DD because it had this really weird sweet taste to it. I'm glad it went away because I can eat peanut butter by the spoonful.
  • @Charla1224 I was a WW fiend before I got pregnant. I've noticed I'm definitely more mindful of my choices (for the most part) because of it. I'm excited to go back to meetings and stuff once the LO is born (and I get a few weeks of adjustment to new life!).
  • I have definitely noticed that my taste buds are more in tune with certain things. Most recently, roasted meats (turkey on thanksgiving and even meatloaf) have a bizarre gamey "off" flavor. The other day at a pub I was brought cheeseburger sliders and they stunk of stinky feet to me, but my SO didn't smell anything.
Things just seems "amped up" flavor-wise and smell-wise, so I can totally see how some of you find stuff too sweet, because I have too (though not enough to keep me from eating sweets!)
  • Tomatoes seem to be super sweet lately to me. I can't eat fast food burgers with tomatoes on them cause it tastes almost like jelly..... Like weird jelly that would go on toast

  • I pretty much hate eating in general at the moment for that reason. Everything leaves me with this horrible sweet after taste which makes my nausea worse. I chew gum ALL day. My jaw is sore because I'm chewing so much. It's the only thing that gets rid of the sweet yuckiness. I have a huge sweet tooth too...it's basically gone. Second to nausea this is easily one of the worst symptoms of pregnancy for me. It's made eating really tough...which consequently has kept my weight down but I'd still prefer to enjoy my food!
  • The only food I can really taste is spicy food. And I love it now! Used to hate spicy stuff but not I can eat sliced jalapeños just by themselves. Take all the fun out of eating other things I used to love though :/

Nothing is good anymore since September. All food is lackluster and disappointing. My last pregnancy wasn't like this. It is so weird.
  • I'm so picky now on what I can eat that it's not funny. I lost weight over Thanksgiving because all the foods at our family's house turned me off.
  • I've noticed a couple things tasted a little more or less strongly, but the big one I noticed was coffee ice cream from Coldstone - it just tasted like butter.  Very disspointing.
