Pregnant Runners

Any other preggo runners planning on doing any races during this pregnancy?  I'm doing a 10k and 90 min AMRAP this month... not shooting for a PR, just in it for the t-shirts :).  I haven't cut back on mileage since getting pregnant, but my pace has slowed a good bit.  I was hoping to do a half marathon in February, but I would be about 25 weeks at that point, gotta see what the OB says before then.  Anyone else having a hard time accepting the fact that they may face physical limitations soon?  At 12+3 weeks, I think I'm still in denial of what's to come.

Re: Pregnant Runners

  • I wish. :(

I've been too sick to run and will have to take it easy the rest of pregnancy.

  • I have friends with healthy pregnancies who have been in races until the end! Good luck! I'm more of the cheer from he sideline type ;)

  • I was running up to 3.5 miles before I got ku, but I've since cut my pace and have to stop around 2.5 miles just because I get exhausted so I stop when my body says it's time to stop. Not sure how it will go when I get a belly, if it gets too uncomfortable I'll switch to walking
  • I'm planning on doing a half marathon at 17 weeks! Definitely won't be a PR, but oh well. It'll probably be my last long distance run.

I'm doubtful I'll be able to run once I get bigger. I had SPD last time around and the doc said it will be worse and happen earlier this time.

  • Running jiggles my insides. I can't even sit up or roll over without wanting to throw up. HAHA Running is so not in my life. It sucks but maybe Ill be able to walk fast/jog once my nausea subsides.
  • I ran on Sunday for the first time all pregnancy. I felt awesome and like I could have gone farther than the measly mile I went, but figured k should ease back in and not push myself. Haven't hit my treadmill since :/

I ran a half marathon in June when my son was 9 months old. Thinking about doing a 10k sometime after July.

  • I've run two half marathons and a handful of 5K's since I've been pregnant. Doing a 15k this weekend. Although I've cut back on mileage (mostly from being tired and feeling cruddy) and my pace is slow and sad, I feel better after I've run. I like to joke about my current running times-- "baby got a pr today" :)
  • You guys are rock stars, haha. I have been so lazy this pregnancy, running-wise (although my taekwondo training has not slowed at all - pregnant ladies can definitely still work out). I did a 26km mountain trail run at 5 weeks, not realizing I was pregnant at the time and not understanding why I felt so terrible after having rocked a half marathon a month earlier. My first pregnancy I ran quite a bit for the first half. I did a full marathon at 8 weeks (had morning sickness, terrible time, but finished) and did a trail run (the same one as this time! I never plan to do that race pregnant but it always happens!) at 15 weeks. I fell down HARD three times on that one, but it was an exceptionally tricky trail with a lot of super steep downhills and giant tree roots so I'm sure a road race wouldn't have been such an issue. It made me a little nervous about continuing to run while pregnant though. At just over 20 weeks I went for a 5k jog with my friend and just felt so uncomfortable and miserable with my belly bouncing up and down that I was like forget this, I'm done, and didn't run again until after baby came. I am very interested to see if you guys do better than I did and have some suggestions for more comfortable running in 2nd tri onwards!
  • Way to go ladies! I'm very impressed! I've been keeping up my 2ce a week runs 3-4 miles, it's a nice break from my dvd workouts. My runs have slowed drastically, joked with my hubs that his walk was likely my run these days, but whatever, I'm going to keep going as long as I can. I made it to 6 months with the running last time then the pressure on the Belly was too much.

  • I ran a 10 miler early one, but the exhaustion kicked my bootie first tri.  I look forward to getting back on my treadmill - starting sooner than later :-)

  • I've been very lucky with morning sickness and have been able to keep up running, although have cut down to 15-20 mpw mostly because of fatigue.  Have run two races since becoming pregnant and have another one on the calendar in December (just a 5k).  Trying to keep a longer run in the 10k range on the weekends, and hoping to do a half sometime this winter (although I don't have one on the calendar yet).  My pace has slowed significantly and I'm trying to keep an eye on HR per my doctor's instructions, but I still feel much better on the days I do run, regardless of my turtle pace!  I'm at FTM so really have no idea how I'll feel later on, just taking it one day at a time for now.

JessRX88, I've read a lot of blogs/posts by other moms and it sounds like around 28 weeks is when the discomfort might be too much to keep up with longer distances, so I'm prepared to drop my miles and add a lot more walking around that point.  So your half at 25 weeks should be achievable if the doctor okays it!
  • First trimester has been rough. At baseline I'm not a hardcore distance person - mostly 5ks and the occasional 10k. I ran a 5k at 6 weeks that I had signed up before getting ku and I ran it purely because I'm stubborn, but I felt like crap. I have managed to keep up a 3 mile run even during the worst weeks, but my pace has slowed considerably, from a baseline of about 8:30/mi to more like 10:00/mi. I'm totally fine with that though. I'm 13 weeks now so my symptoms are starting to improve and I'm just making it out more (like 4x/week instead of just once). I hope to just keep this routine up as long as I can, but I don't plan on signing up for any races.

  • I ran the Spartan Race at 6 weeks pregnant back in October and haven't done anything since. I tell myself I'm still recovering . . . But the truth is the fatigue, breathlessness, and dizziness have planted me on the couch. I'm hoping to get back into it during the second trimester in a week or two! I hate not working out, but walking down the hallway wears me out!

  • I'm reviving the pregnant runner thread because I had to share with other pregnant runners the experience I've had running in trimester 2!  Tonight I had my best run in about 14 weeks. I slowed down so much during trimester 1 and I was so tired I didn't want to get out there. Since last week, everything has turned around and tonight I ran 4 miles in the high 8's!!

How is everyone else feeling? Post some runs here so we can motivate each other and share our pregnancy pr's!
  • I have a cold but toughed out a mile yesterday- I considered that a win at 16wks with a stuffy nose!
  • I did a little over 9 miles on Sunday, at a slower pace than pre-pregnancy.  Only 3.25 miles this morning before work.  Probably about 5 miles tomorrow.  Still averaging 20-25 miles a week (3 short runs and 1 long one). I have a 90 min AMRAP even coming up next week... let's see how far I make it!
