Tummy Sleepers, anyone?

I sleep on my stomach. Obviously, at 12w4d that is starting to get uncomfortable! I can still lay on my stomach but I dont want to sleep like that and feel like I should train myself for another sleeping position anyway.
Sleeping with a pillow between my legs has helped me stay on my side but I wake up several times a night and I am freaking exhausted. Also I wake up if the pillow falls off the bed, changes position, etc.
Any help?? Fellow tummy sleepers out there?

Re: Tummy Sleepers, anyone?

  • Try wedging a pillow or pillows between your stomach and the bed to keep you sort of between your side and your tummy (for now - you'll have to gradually move more towards your side as your belly grows). I find that more comfortable than sleeping completely on my side...I find my shoulder/hip get sore when I put all my weight on them.

  • Thanks @Emztron500! i woke up this morning with my whole left arm in pins and needles because I slept with it under my pillow at this weird angle!
  • I sleep on my stomach and as of now (11w 4days) I'm still okay.  I'm going to try to ease myself off of it, but that position always gets me to sleep the fastest.  I'm not sure how I'm going to work around it
  • I'm 14 weeks and still sleeping on my stomach. I SHOULD start taking steps to get out of the habit, so I'll be following this :)
  • Buy a snoogle! So comfortable and keeps me on my side :)

I might have to buy this just for the cute name!!! Looking up snoogle now.
  • Ooooph! I'm a hardcore stomach sleeper, but for the last week or so there is just no way I can do it. I'm a little over 13 weeks, It's just gotten uncomfortable. I haven't been sleeping as well, and I've been switching between my back and my sides. Definitely tempted to get one of those pregnancy body pillows to see if it will help at all. It's been miserable since I haven't been able to sleep on my stomach anymore. So much waking up throughout the night. I wish I could just cut a hole in my mattress to make room for my belly. I still want to stomach sleep darn it!
  • I wedge a pillow under my stomach. My 11 month old sleeps against my back so that helps me not to roll over! I do miss sleeping fully on my stomach though!

  • I agree with the snoogle! I have always been a tummy sleeper but have had terrible heartburn starting last week no matter what I eat and this pillow helps keep me sleeping on my left side to minimize that at night.
  • I asked my dr and he said it is safe to sleep on your tummy as long as it feels comfortable. Either baby or your own body will let you know when it isn't comfortable anymore. With my previous pregnancy I slept on my tummy until 16 weeks, after that it was so uncomfortable that I had not problem sleeping on my side.
  • I have a 3 inch memory foam mattress topper. It's great, no matter how I lay there is no pressure on any one point. I can still sleep on my stomach because of it but it makes me feel like I have to get up and pee.

  • I'm dreading my belly coming in because I've been a stomach sleeper since birth. We recently got a memory foam mattress so I really hope it makes side sleeping less awful.
  • Stomach sleeping is the only way to relieve my lower back pain right now.
  • Stomach sleeper over here too! This is what I did with DS... I slept mainly on my tummy but kept my leg bent so my knee was up close to my belly. (I'm already doing this). When I get a little bigger I'll add a pillow under my leg so there's a little more belly room. I'm not completely belly down but at least half my body thinks it is! Later on you can add another pillow under your boobs when you need more belly room and an extra one under your head if you need the extra height. Then I eventually was just on my side the last month but I was barely sleeping by then anyways.

There was nothing better than when I could finally lay flat on my tummy after DS was born (about 5 weeks pp for me) I just powered trough laying on my engored boobs - it was worth it!

  • The snoogle really helped me be comfortable sleeping on my side when I was pregnant with DD. I had it under me enough to trick half my body into thinking I was laying on my belly.

  • I was a stomach sleeper before my last pregnancy. I was all my life. I thought I would find it so hard to adapt to another position but you will naturally not want to sleep on it as it will freak you out and you will become uncomfortable. Side sleeping will become your friend (as well as the snoogle). Now I rarely stomach sleep.

  • I sleep on my stomach and it is generally the only way I can fall asleep. I feel like my legs get really restless unless I am laying on my stomach. I've actually been using a pillow under each hip but not touching in the middle so my butt is a little up in the air and my stomach is off the bed. I started doing that years ago when I was having major stomach issues and my stomach hurt to sleep on. This keepa pressure off my stomach but lets me stay stomach sleeping.

I also use a boppy as a pillow!! I hate moving pillows around and trying to keep them comfortable when I sleep on my stomach and I found the boppy perfect. It was for my nephew when he was a baby but they never used it and whenever I was over to watch him I would fall asleep on it, so I stole it and have never regretted it.
  • I could only fall asleep if I slept on my tummy up until my 1st pregnancy 8 years ago. After the 1st trimester of that pregnancy I switched to side sleeping and I have never gone back. Now sleeping on my tummy is uncomfortable for me even when I'm not pregnant. I always fall asleep on my left side now. Sometime during my 2nd pregnancy (don't know if it has to do with pregnancy or age or maybe even my mattress?) sleeping on my side started to hurt my hips but I find sleeping with a pillow between my legs helps a lot.

  • Snoogle sleeper right here. I love sleeping on my stomach and was not sure how I was going to give that up but the snoogle has been a dream. I've become so attached that I even took it with me to my in laws when we were visiting for Thanksgiving. Obnoxious but so worth it.

  • I have been a tummy sleeper forever. And with my first pregnancy with DD I bought the snoogle pillow in hopes for better sleep. It was way too much pillow for me. I then stumbled on a cuddle pillow made by Boppy. And I've slept with it for almost three years now. I LOVE it. And I am considering getting a new one for this pregnancy.
  • Snoogle pillow is the best thing ever!! Not too expensive on Amazon.
  • Okay, so my hubby bought me a Snoogle because I've been having a lot of issues sleeping. He ordered via Amazon and it was super flattened for shipment purposes. Now I can't seem to get it fluffed. Tried the dryer with tennis balls and fluffing myself. Anyone else have this problem and tips to resolve the issue?
  • My hubby also bought me a snoogle and it is awesome.  The only problem is that I toss and turn ALL night and the snoogle makes that difficult.  I basically have to uncover, flip the snoogle, get back in it, put the covers back up, and try again.  LOL.  I'm guessing when I'm bigger and less mobile (now at 11w3d) this will become more convenient and I'll want to turn less (I hope)!

  • I was considering buying a snuggle but I have the same concern as what your describing since I always change side during the nigth... I tought you could just use the 'back side' as a front as well? Or i guess it doesnt work?
Still hesitating to get it... Im in Canada and its a bit more expensive here...
  • Looks like lots of snooglers on here! My only concern with the snoogle is that if I sleep on my left side I'll have the snoogle 'behind' me and basically building a wall between me and Husband! Not sure how I feel about that? Trading sleep over (real) snuggles?

Yes - the snoogle can be used during sleep facing in or facing out, but I find only facing out (tummy facing the opening) to be the only really comfortable option for me.  But I am a little larger than the average woman and I have a really big bust, which probably doesn't help.  I really don't think you'll be disappointed with the snoogle though.  I even use it for watching TV on the couch wrapped around me.  It provides great back support and a raised armrest in front/on your belly which has been super cozy for me.  So glad to have mine.

  • I'm still sleeping on my belly (14weeks). With DS, I stopped around 12 weeks I think. We have a memory foam mattress topper this time, and it's already making such a big difference.

Okay, so now H bought me a Snoogle! I slept with it a couple nights so far but I feel like it might take a little getting used to. Any advice? Sometime I like to change position at night and also, letting anything get in the way of me and the bathroom seems like a bad idea.
  • Haha!  Yeah, I'm a tosser/turner when I sleep, too.  Which has been really difficult.  But we have a King size bed so I can push the snoogle to the middle when I don't want it anymore.  I don't sleep with it every night but I'm sure I will get there.

  • I'm a belly sleeper too and at about 14 weeks it became way too uncomfortable even though my belly's not really big at all. Between my belly and some acid reflux, I had to do something. My friend is letting me use her pregnancy pillow. It's made by Boppy and it's amazing. It's kind of like two boppies put together in an S shape. If I wrap my leg around it the right way it will move with me pretty well as well as elevate my head a little bit which helps with the reflux. I don't know if they make that model anymore though
  • I have the same boppy full body pillow @grache2016 They sell them at Target. Love my pillow <3
