TTC After a Loss

Intro and Methotrexate question *tw loss mentioned*

Hi ladies, I'm new here and I've been trying to find the answer to my question through searches but I can't really come up with anything. We were 5w4d when I started bleeding and went to the ER. After all the tests I was diagnosed with pregnancy of unknown location. I've been having follow up blood work every other day this week and my betas are "stuck" in the 60s. No real changes. My OB mentioned methotrexate if my levels don't start dropping and I was just wondering if anyone else had done this? The biggest thing I have read on Dr Google is how crappy it makes you feel/ can't start TTC for 3 months.

Re: Intro and Methotrexate question *tw loss mentioned*

  • I had methotrexate for an ectopic.  If your OB can't find the pregnancy, and they are sure it's not viable, I think they can do a uterine biopsy to determine if there is fetal tissue in your uterus.  If that is positive, you don't need methotrexate.  If it's negative, then it suggests more strongly that the pregnancy is elsewhere.  I don't know if your HCG has to be at a certain level to make this work, but your HCG is definitely too low to find the pregnancy on ultrasound.

I tolerated the methotrexate fine, really.  The pain from the ectopic was far worse.  I was a little nauseated that night, but didn't vomit or anything.  I didn't really have any other effects other than cramping and bleeding.  It took 5 weeks for my HCG to hit zero, but mine was 600 something to start with.  Waiting 3 months sucks, but so far my cycles seem to be relatively normal.

  • Thank you so much for your answer. My doctor didn't mention any other testing could be done other than just giving me the methotrexate. I plan to ask more questions before I blindly just take it. My hcg levels are stuck in the 60s and already pretty low.

  • Whovian,

What did you find out from your doctor? Did you end up taking the Methotrexate?

Your situation sounds very similar to mine and my doctor gave me the options Penelope mentioned.

We were at 6 weeks and my doctor insisted we do something immediately to avoid a rupture if the fetus was growing in my tubes.
I had to decide whether to do a D&C (they biopsy the tissue in the uterus to see if there's fetal tissue) or just take the MX.  We went with the D&C crossing our fingers it showed the tissue but it didn't so had to go through with both.

Fortunately I had no side effects from the MX and I only had to take one round. My doctor tracked levels all the way down to zero and told me I could start TTC after 2 normal cycles.  Did yours say 3 cycles?
