first ultrasound appointment questions

How far along were you for your first ultrasound ?
Who refers you ? Do you have to ask for a referal for that ?
Who does the ultrasound ? I hear it is supposed to be before your first obgyn appointment ?

I had my first u/s at 6w which was ordered by my OB since I didn't know my dates. If your OB doesn't have a u/s tech in office, they would refer you to the u/s office or hospital.

Usually an ultrasound tech performs an ultrasound, but I have had the doctor do the ultrasound as well.

I have never heard of someone having an ultrasound before their first appt unless you were working with an RE (fertility specialist).

  • Ok ... i havnt met my obgyn yet .... i called them last week to book my first appointment and they said they werent booking july due moms yet(im 8 weeks) I had a miscarriage my first pregnancy and never made it to obgyn. The only form of " confirmed " pregnancy is 3 at home tests. Did blood work nov12 havnt heard anything except that i have a low thyroid which they gave me pills for . Is this normal ? Feel like im left in the wind.
  • I was about five weeks.
My OB referred me for one. I had it done in the same OB/GYN office.
    An ultrasound tech did it.

It's normal to not have an appointment until much later than that. If your tests are positive, you're pregnant. Congrats!
If there were any other problems with your bloods they would have told you.

  • Usually you see the ob between 8-10 weeks , ultrasound at 12 and 20 weeks and that's it unless you have problems, they have a hard time using a Doppler on you , or if you choose to have a elective one and pay out of pocket.
    Your ob will order it.

This isn't necessarily true. Some people only have the 20 week AS, but many people have more than those two. It depends on your OB and your personal medical history. It also doesn't mean you have problems. Some places are more conservative than others.

I had my first ultrasound at 8 weeks, two days before my first OB appointment. This is how my OB's office does things. My doctor said I'll probably need additonal monitering in the third trimester, not because I have a problem, but based on a non pregnancy related issue.
