Breastfeeding

one breast per feed?

My son will eat on one side only each feed. He's only 3 1/2 weeks old. Is this okay? I feel like my supply is going way down since I can go 6 hours or so without feeding on one side. Should I try to get him to eat from both?

Re: one breast per feed?

  • I was always told to feed with both but, no way, I was so uncomfortable. I never fed with both, supply regulated and it was all fine. But that's just my experience and it might not go the same for you. Just wanted to chime in and let you know that it might be just fine.

  • I feed one side, and did with my 1st for 1+ year. You can offer other side but my LO doesnt take it normally. Supply regulates but you can always pump for relief, just beware of engorgement and clogged ducts until you regulate.
  • I fed my LO on one side only per feeding and my supply dropped so much that he actually started loosing weight. It took me a solid 3-4 weeks to get my supply back up (with supplements I might add) if your LO is gaining weight well I would say you may have oversupply and your supply dropping may not be all that bad. But it was such a headache getting my supply up when it dipped I had to comment.
I'd watch his weight gain. We bought a mail scale and weigh him on a cookie sheet with a blanket. They are way cheaper than the infant scales and they'll be useful for more than a year. Or you could go to your pediatricians office for weight checks.
But in my experience it definitely lowered my supply. If you have an over supply that may not be so bad but I was barely producing enough before my supply went down so it caused a problem
  • I'm only feeding one side per feed.. Daughter was born at 8lbs 2oz and now at 7 weeks she is 12lbs even so we haven't had any issues. If I have time after feeding her I'll pump until I'm completely empty and then some more to make sure my supply stays up though and make sure I'm drinking enough water. Im still able to pump an extra 1-2oz after each feed.
